I just ordered a set, they look beautiful. I like this version of lotr the best, better than single versions, the paper, artwork, print and feel of the book is incredible.
Can you post what you think of the quality of the books when it comes John? I'm probably going to order a set myself as it's my 55th birthday next month and it would be a great present for me.
Bought mine, I'm really hoping they do matching Hobbit with Alan Lee's Illustrations and Silmarillion in this aesthetic as well. These books are absolutely gorgeous.
Thats what I was wondering, Williams and Morrow released The Hobbit Deluxe edition back in August would like to know if it goes with this set before I purchase?
Wow, didn't realise there was an unboxing for this already. I pre-ordered it a few weeks ago but ETA is Oct 29th, gonna watch this in the meantime. Thanks!
Excellent, thanks for sharing, they remind me of the 2020 box set with the Hobbit - but maybe even better quality. I'll see about getting these depending on price!
Is the paper quality about the same as the illustrated by author edition of the Silmarillion? I ask because I really love that edition and don't really like the thinner more easily yellowed paper of the standard paperbacks. I'd like to know what kind of paper this is printed with
I'm terrible for Lord of the Rings editions, I've two copies of the centenary edition and two copies of the red & black deluxe edition of a few years ago!
A great review, many thanks! I see that the Amazon UK version is listed as having 140 more pages than the US version. Does anyone know if this is just due to the UK version not being as tall? I would have thought that both versions would be the same size.
I'm far from convinced the quarter binding is actually leather. I ordered directly from Harper Collins during a 3 hour 50% flash sale, so I'm OK with what I paid, but I wish the quarter binding was better quality. It is indistinguishable from cardboard in my view.
Looks like I could use this to build my „shrine“: Already have the 2016 movie set that looks like a book shelf, last year‘s Lego Rivendell and maybe the three Tolkien-illustrated editions 😅
Would you say this is the best version to buy for someone looking for a nice version? I have some old, really beat up paperbacks that really need replacing!
Was surprisingly disappointed by the paper. Compared this new Edition to the Standard Hardback Alan Lee Illustrated boxset from 2020 side by side and the 2020 boxset paper is denser. Overall Print quality is better in the 2020 which just shouldn't be the case. Champagne problems for sure though as the entire set is quite beautiful and put together nicely but as much as I wanted this to be my re-reading copies of LOTR I will most likely go back to the 2020 standard boxset of these books.
The illustrations look of better quality than in the 2020 edition, where they looked not so saturated. It also seems to be a reissue of sorts of the 2021 folio society edition.
I've been reading an email I was sent from Harper Collins and this 70th Anniversary edition is apparently based on the one volume Centenary edition illustrated by Alan Lee but with new paintings from him as well as pencil drawings. I love the Centenary edition so count me in to get a copy of this one.
From what I see in this video, there are two new plates in Fellowship: The Bridge of Khazad Dûm, and Lothlorien. So that's two new plates in the first book, let's see what's new in Two Towers and Return of the King.
The print quality looks similar to the Alan Lee editions. Even the green hue of the pages. TBH that's a lot of money for mass produced faux quarter leather. At least it looks good. Not like the loud colored recent editions
While I prefer my single volume Illustrated edition, and therefore have no reason to own this edition, I will most likely buy this set as a Christmas gift for some friends.
If this is so special, I would have dressed up for the occasion. : ) Tolkien would never have approved of merely an underwear shirt. He he. Part ot the attraction of being a Tolkien fan, is being conservative and dignified. I like the 50th anniversary edition best, with Tolkien's own artwork. Alan Lee's presentations are a completely different in mentality - pale and nondescript.
I have it on order to go with my other 80 rare Tolkien editions. P.S UK Deluxe editions have had those transit boxes for years. Some are even illustrated with the map of Middle Earth. Salutations from Belfast Northern Ireland 🇬🇧
@@Abefroman-lq3md Very well done buddy. We both share a love of the greatest book ever written. God Bless JRR Tolkien and his son Christopher. I'm having some Baileys so I'm going to raise a glass to both of them now for what they've given us over all these years. It's all thanks to those little hobbits.
When it comes to loose items such as maps - I think it would be better to provide some sort of pocket to put them in so they don't keep falling out.
It’s a good suggestion. No pocket in this edition though.
@@TolkienGuide That's a shame as it shouldn't take much to add a pocket on the front or rear of the cover.

Thank you guys! Are the paintings on glossy paper? Or is it matte paper like the 2020 Alan Lee illustrated box set?
50th has been my favorite so far. I love reading it. I might get this though

What a shame that Harper Collins UK won't deliver to Germany. I could've saved 40% with a discount on their website, but now I won't be able to...
Can you get the Houghton Mifflin version from the USA?
A great review, many thanks! I see that the Amazon UK version is listed as having 140 more pages than the US version. Does anyone know if this is just due to the UK version not being as tall? I would have thought that both versions would be the same size.
They are exactly the same (size, page count) for the US and UK editions.
@@TolkienGuidegreat many thanks for your reply.
What is the quality of the paper? Is it as good as folio paper? Is the printing crisp?

Do you have any information on The Hobbit Deluxe edition released in August by Williams and Morrow, would like to know if it matches with this set?
Very different design for that hobbit, sorry.
@@TolkienGuide Thank you so much, do you know wether Williams and Morrow will be releasing a matching set in the future?
@jeffreyparker7013 nothing has been announced. I do hope so though!

Where can these be purchased? I don't see them on Amazon or the publisher's website.
It's now on Amazon retailing for about £180 Calvin.
imma wait for the 100th anniversary edition!
You will have lots of choices at that point as it should be in the public domain!
Damn it! I was rather happy with my bookshelf.. now I want more space!
You'll definitely need more space buddy. 🙂
looks really nice, thx for the video
Thanks for watching!
Would you say this is the best version to buy for someone looking for a nice version? I have some old, really beat up paperbacks that really need replacing!
I'd go with the Folio Society editions myself.
@AdrianHague they are a good choice! Getting expensive (~£2000+ for a set these days)
@@TolkienGuide True dat! (for the special editions).
Does this edition come with the big plate of Gondor that came as a separate poster in the Folio Society edition?
… and here I thought my wallet dodged a bullet in deciding not buy the upcoming FS The Hobbit L/E.. 😂
It's a bit pricey, it's on Amazon for around £180 but it will probably drop a bit in price after six months when it's released.

I have the 1977 Folio Society editin, but I was disappointed in the covers and I didn't like the illustrations at all. This looks much better.
I've seen various Folio editions on eBay and I'm not a fan of them at all.
How does this edition’s paper quality compare to the 2020 box set that was illustrated by Alan Lee. That box set also included the hobbit.
2020 paper is denser and overall better quality surprisingly
@@CK2957 Good to know. Thanks.

Yeah I might have to send a Balrog round to see if they do that!! 😂
