Every time I watch this I get goosebumps from seeing Steve Cauthen give this horse such a wonderful ride. Not easy in a race like this to wait in front, but this is an object lesson from a master at how to do it.
Remember watching this live - a unique memory. A stalls to winning post victory without ever seeing another horse takes some doing over Epsom's demanding mile and a half.
I backed Slip Anchor in the Lingfield Derby Trial and knew he was good. To win a Derby at such an undulating course like Epsom in this style is breathtaking. Best Derby winner in past 40 years, Shergar couldn't live with this guy.
Steve Cauthen gave us a masterclass in front running on Slip Anchor and probably the greatest ever ride in the Classic, he knew exactly how fast he was going and gave the horse a breather at just the right time, turning for home the other jockeys must have thought Slip Anchor must come back to them but they obviously didn't know Steve Cauthen has got a stopwatch in his head and away he went again, he made mugs of the top Euro jockeys
@@rajeshtlalwani If they were good enough, yes. He rode plenty from the front that were not, so were unable to keep up the pace he was setting and so were beaten.
@jeff griffin I suggest you do some research - Slip Anchor had subsequent King George, Irish Derby and Breeders Cup winners a long, long way behind him that day.
He was scintillating this day, I've never seen a Derby won so far out ... and to think he never won another race.... probably explains why I always lose my money backing horses ;)
The easiest Derby a Winner in the last 31 years....the way the horse slipped the field around Tattenham Corner lives in the memory and is up there with Arazi in the Breeders Cup Juvenile
Probably the easiest derby winner in the history of this great race. Steve was good in America, he became great in England. One my all time favorite jockeys along with Angel Cordero Jr
There have been beaten Epsom runners in the Derby who have gone to become Group 1 winners in their own right from Dancing Brave and Terimon to recent ones like Fame And Glory and Kingston Hill.
Except that he didn't. Steve was on a horse good enough to win, Lester was not. Swap jockeys and you would get the same result and since Lester won the Derby nine times, I doubt anyone had to give him any lessons.
I was on at 20/1 ante post liked the way he won at Newmarket also had a big bet when he won at Lingfield I like Wajeez for this year 2016 it's a very good horse how good I don't know but at 20/1 one can take a chance, has been backed in from 33/1 so a few people seem to agree with me.
Every time I see this I think that, today, the brilliant Cauthen would win 250 races a year nowadays - and would ride the others to sleep on the AW, Southwell especially.
Slip Anchor was more than a handicapper afterwards. In the Champion Stakes later in the season, over a trip too short for him he finished 2nd to Pebbles, who was brilliant on the day & he had good horses behind him.
Better performance than Shergar, who was dropped out the back whilst the others cut their thoats. Slip Anchor took it out from the front as soon as the gates opened and Steve Cauthen could've stopped for a pie and a pint half way up the finishing straight and still would've won by a street
Loved seeing Slip Anchor win. However, he was not in the class of Shergar. Shergar beat a better field in his Derby and he went on to win a King George
Nah, this wasn't a great field but Shergar's field was weaker, piss poor for a Derby. I put Troy above either, he was up against a mighty Derby field and ge swamped them.
@jeff griffin Anyone who suggests that the winners of the King George, Irish Derby, Breeders Cup, 2,000 Guineas and a horse twice voted Irish Horse of the year were not real champions is simply clueless - particularly when some of that field left spreadeagled by Slip Anchor subsequently went on to win the highest quality all age 1.5 mile races in England and the USA ! Slip Anchor was so good Henry Cecil refused to even allow his subsequent triple crown winning filly 'Oh So Sharp' (the only to do so for 35 years) to run against him because their performances on the training gallops told him: "Slip Anchor would gallop her into the ground" .

No, the horse was that good even Cauthen stated 'Best horse I have ridden'. Classy Performance
He knew how to run horses from the front.

What a derby field! Full of talent.

Boris the Blade, more like Boris the Bellend...Some people....!
Frankel never won at the trip
Dancing brave who lost to sharistani
@@gazowen7310 I backed Sharastani that day but lets be fair, DB should have won. Sharastani was a good horse but was very lucky to win that.
One of his descendants ran in Turkey between 2000-2002 . He was also spectacular...
Steven Cauthen is a genius.
He was scintillating this day, I've never seen a Derby won so far out ... and to think he never won another race.... probably explains why I always lose my money backing horses ;)
He was injured after this quite badly .he did make it back to the track for another two races but was never the same
There that day. Limo at Derby Arms. Crown and Anchor, Roulette, Darts and find the lady on the downs. The Derby was lawless back then.
The easiest Derby a Winner in the last 31 years....the way the horse slipped the field around Tattenham Corner lives in the memory and is up there with Arazi in the Breeders Cup Juvenile
Until the one today.

Shegar
Slip Anchor won easily than Shergar, Nashwan, Troy ...any of them.
@@colinjennings3661 When Seabird won, he passed the others like they were standing still
I've just remembered, I went to Epsom that day.
The star in this field was supreme leader who became one of the best sires for jumps horses
Rag.. That's why it sired JUMP Horses 😳
The best ever jockey from the front
Maybe he should have waited for the rest then maybe we might have seen a better race lol truly a brilliant horse and jockey.
Only jockey to win both the Kentucky and Epsom Derbys.
Nick Hanlon Shades of Shergar four years earlier. Wow, destroyed the opposition with yards to spare.
There have been beaten Epsom runners in the Derby who have gone to become Group 1 winners in their own right from Dancing Brave and Terimon to recent ones like Fame And Glory and Kingston Hill.
He did a “Secretariat “
steve had clock in his head ran the race how he wanted
That's right mate and it never lost or gained time ,my favorite ever jockey
Mine too.
Steve gave lester a racing lesson that day
Except that he didn't. Steve was on a horse good enough to win, Lester was not.

Slip Anchor was imperious this day. However, he didn't win another race after this.
Just goes to show how good pebbles was went she won the champion stakes on that derby form... absolutely won at a canter fro Slip A
Who’s here after Serpentine? Very similar races.
Slip anchor won the Derby. Serpentine stole the Derby.
@Fm3544
And neither won a race after their Derbies unfortunately.
I was on at 20/1 ante post liked the way he won at Newmarket also had a big bet when he won at Lingfield

best derby winner ever on his day would have beaten anything
I would say Seabird was best Derby winner, cruised past the rest of the field like they were standing still
Every time I see this I think that, today, the brilliant Cauthen would win 250 races a year nowadays - and would ride the others to sleep on the AW, Southwell especially.
Read post properly - it says NOWADAYS
Every time I see this in look for the wedge it got me long spent and sadly if stablemate won oaks was a huge difference memories ????
Oh so sharp I think you mean?
Theatrical how the hell did it win the 1987 breeders cup turf, was a donkey over here.
American style,one bell.
We know the horses name & surely Steve has stolen it!
Wow At Talaq went on to win a Melbourne Cup .
and Theatrical won BC turf in '87
And petoski won the King george ,he destroyed a super class field ,shame about the injury to him,he could have been very special
Decent Derby field, not a super field by any means.
At Talaq was the previous year.
The horse in 4th Supreme Leader became one of the most amazing Sire of so many jumps winners , Unlike the winner here .
My market pony could sire jumps winners, Slip Anchor was a CLASSY thoroughbred..
I've forgotten more than you know about horseracing. I saw Slip Anchor run twice in the flesh. Who is the grandsire to Monkfish?
The horse was wasted nothing more than a handicapper afterwards but one of the best runs in the Derby for sure
Handicapper! Yeah I can see that the way he quickened from the front😏
Slip Anchor was more than a handicapper afterwards. In the Champion Stakes later in the season, over a trip too short for him he finished 2nd to Pebbles, who was brilliant on the day & he had good horses behind him.

At end of the day, pebbles beat them all @ Newmarket
yes it was a sub standard derby but all he could do was win and he did just that.A good derby winner but not one of the greats
Really? Slip Anchor had subsequent King George, Irish Derby and Breeders Cup winners a long, long way behind him that day.
