A real great. He was fighting the camber all the way up the straight and I still don't believe he acted down the hill but despite all this he still won. I can't recall a horse so unsuited by Epsom that managed to win. He was only 80% fit for the Dante butbcrushed Ascot Knight on his seasonal debut. If only he had been ready in time I firmly believe he would have won the guineas en route to the triple crown which his talent merits. Beaten by Mtoto in the Eclipse costing me loads but he was short of work according to Cecil which probably did make the difference and Mtoto proved himself by being the most unlucky loser in next seasons Arc after winning the Eclipse twice and the King George too. A great shame he died so young from cancer.

Ironically, Pat Eddery gave Bellottie here a similar ride to the one given by Greville Starkey on Dancing Brave the year before.

Often overlooked is the fact that Cauthen was very strong in a finish.

Only jockey to win both Kentucky and Epsom derbys

It's funny how Pat Eddery gave Belloto a similar ride to the one Greville Starkey gave Dancing Brave the year before and yet not much was said about it.

Bellotto nearly fell down the hill, he was regathered and came with a long steady run. Dancing Brave was switched off too much and flew down the straight, believe he ran a furlong sub 11 seconds in chasing Shahrastani

Sadjiyd was given more of a Dancing Brave ride than Bellotto here. Very strange ride for a 2nd or 3rd favourite given what had happened in 86

He rode Slip Anchor two years earlier and this is another great Derby winner.

I was 16 at the time and had him backed at 6/1 for a tenner. The only ante post bet I've ever had on a horse.

Reference Point just didn't falter, he kept on galloping right to the line, the speed horses nearly got to him but he outstayed them all when asked the question by the great Stevie Cauthen

@andyw74 also with Cauthen on board for Henry Cecil. He had slipped the field by the time they came down the hill and won by 7 lengths
