M1Garand or M16?

  • Join me in my discussion of two of America’s iconic battle rifles. Surely this will bring out many opinions, and I am only sharing mine.
I also need to point out (to save anyone else from doing it!) that the rifle shown to represent the M-16 is not an M-16
    Enjoy!

The Garand has advantages no doubt, namely range and firepower per shot. I agree with you overall but I do believe a Garand (or a .308 semi auto) belongs in any survivalist’s safe. Here’s why: air superiority and artillery aren’t in most survivalist’s arsenals. A survivalist
might find himself in a similar situation to a WW2 infantryman. A .30-06 or .308 is better at defeating cover. You can’t call in artillery when your green tips aren’t cutting it. Having that said if I had to run out the door today and survive God knows what I’m taking the PSA 20” and Glock 34. If I’m bunkering in, you bet close by the homestead I’ll have the Garand to sing it’s ping to the Golden Horde

Depends on the battleground. If I have a wide open field of fire and targets are 200+ yards away id pick the m1 garand. (Though I'd prefer the M1A with its 20 round box mag).
Everything else within 200 yards id pick the m16. Just me.

Entertaining and enjoyable video, Dave, with a well-balanced array of pros and cons for each of the featured rifles. The key statement picked up by my ears: "Government is stupid." Multiply that many times over and embellish it with stubborn, prejudicial and corrupt when referring to the people in charge of procurement -- both military and non-military.

Like you, I own, value and appreciate fine specimens of these same rifles as well.
Overall and generally speaking, for a battle or even a SHTF option I'd confidantly consider primarily using my Ruger .300 Blackout mini14. Because it's so versatile.
I do prefer running this type of M1 Garand style platform like the M1A squad scout, which is another 30 cal. option that I have.
Others milage may vary but with my particular mini14 I've found it to be, very reliable, accurate and I tend to run it more effectively and as fast as my AR15.
    (Disclaimer;
I have more trigger time with the mini14 recently.)
I also like the variety of bullet options, suppressor superiority and the harder hitting terminal ballistics that the 300 B.O. round offers over 5.56 or .223.
These are both solid and proven weapons that still have their place. That's why I have them too.
It's always better to have an assortment of tools for various tasks. That's why I've started to accumulate the components to build an AR pistol in .300 Blackout.

    Definitely valuable material.
I like to mention, in states like New York, The M1 Garand bypasses most of the "assault rifle" laws. There is no removeable magazine, the Garand utilizes a clip. There is no pistol grip. It is a semi-automatic rifle. Above all, it is a capable rifle. I served in the Army and I do not believe the M1 Garand is a vastly superior rifle, but for the rest of us in a civilian sense, I'd say the M1 Garand is the best thing you can have in your home for your personal defense while maintaining yourself a law abiding citizen.

I'm a member of the GCA and the Grand is like George S. Patton described it, " The greatest battle implement ever devised." I own two M1's and one Barbie rifle. I love my M1's. I'm going out on a limb and think that my SKS is better than my Barbie rifle. I've been a peace officer for 28 years. I carry a Colt Commander variant, .45. Flying ashtrays, proven!

There's no doubt about it, the M-1 Garand was a great battle rifle for the type of fighting it was made for ... and it's still a great rifle. But it's heavy and not made for close quarter combat and, as you pointed out, the ammunition was also heavy. The M-16 was light, its ammunition was light, and it was a good close quarter weapon, though the M-4, with its 14.5 inch barrel was a much better close quarter weapon. In WWII a long range rifle was necessary. In Viet Nam combat was often under 100 yards and in dense jungle where the M-16 was best. Thanks for an excellent discussion of the pro's and con's of both weapons.

Cephas Martin I use the M1 as my go to for everything. However, I live up in the mountains several miles outside of a small town of 50-60 people. One might say it’s a rural area.
It’s great for hunting or animal defense. I personally enjoy how easy it is to clean afterwards when you roll down a hill or fall in the mud. It’s a great companion while out fixing fence or irrigating. All things aside, I won’t claim it’s Gods gift to guns... I simply like it.
But like you said, it’s a field rifle. It’s absolute crap for indoors or close fighting, I would rather have a sub machine gun or even a pistol for room clearing

  • @gabe9120

The garand is indeed a battle rifle but the AR 15 is an assault rifle due to its smaller cartridge compared to .30 06.

  • @TheTGRproductions

Power and range wise, M1 Garand all day. 30-06 is the vibe check of rifle cartridges 😂
But if you were to ask me which one I would take in battle. M16 or M4, hands down. Being able to carry 3 times the ammo, plus have a standard 30 round Magazine has its perks!

M1 Garand is what I'd choose. It's the ease of maintenance, accuracy, stopping power, and it's all-weather toughness that appeals to me. I'm a clumsy bastard at the best of times, and I can just see myself ruining an M16.

I love my M1 Garands, but boy am I grateful when I pick up my AR-15 with a 30 round mag and feel how *light* the rifle is. The boys who stormed the beaches of Normandy would have carried an M16 rifle if it existed in their time.

  • @kennethrisner8648

to be clear from the get go, if i could afford only one of the 2, id choose the garand as i'm a big anything ww2 nut. and only a fool would try to argue that the 5.56 round is nearly as powerful as the 30 06 round. they aren;t even in the same ball park, the 30 06 round is at least 4 times as powerful/ thing is more power doesnt always mean more damage done. ive seen vids where people were shooting various soft targets such as melons, and slightly harder targets like cans of food or coconuts with both the 5,56 and 30 06 rounds and while the 30 06 round blew a clean hole through them all, the 5.56 rounds absolutely dissintegrated them. there was nothing left. different load for different purposes

If you were to compare the M1 with any other gun with more suppression power I'd agree with you but you're comparing it with the AR15 or M16 which in my personal opinion are nothing but pieces of junk now if you were to compare it with a more reliable gun like the AK-47 or any other going to have more suppression power I'd agree with you but not with those two pieces of junk you're basically pulling out a really good gun which is the M1 and comparing it to a piece of garbage more suppression power yes more capacity yes but that's all it has it's still a piece of junk if you compare it to any other halfway decent military gun with the same capacity
