    Funny you said that about having people decide what they want to be at 18. My son, at this point, is graduating and saying he doesn’t want to go to college because he really doesn’t know what he wants to be, either. So, I keep telling him he hast to take some courses during the time, so, that he can figure out what he does want to be and not waste all those years in between.

    "It's like I need the characters to tell me what went down instead of me telling them" - Yes! That's literally it! When I write, that's how it goes down as well. Even when I try to tell my characters what to do, they blindside me, so that's always fun 😅 When people ask me how I write, that's what I tell them but they seem to think it's weird? So it's nice to know someone else gets it. Anyways, I'm nosey so I loved this Q&A (even though I'm in a little late!) It's always nice to know more about RUclipsrs (on their terms ofcourse) so thanks for sharing! 💖

      The best is when I have a little plan for a scene or something and I get to it and the characters are actually mad at one another instead, or it just goes completely different than I had though it would! Really just feels like I'm the story's typist at that point

    The discussion of self-publishing hit me hard. I started college as a composition major and for us, we're told we have basically no choice BUT to self publish, and it comes with all the same concessions and consequences of book self-publishing. That is, we have to self-market, self-network, etc. etc. and become more of an entrepreneur than a musician. It sucks.
    But I also really vibed with what you said about writing your book in 2018 and realizing that nothing else could fulfill you the same way. I really came to understand what that was for me this year, and it's given some sort of direction to my life that I've been a bit unsure of for the past few years. When you create something you're really proud of for once, and continue to look back to and show to people and really enjoy, that's when you know you've found something truly fulfilling.

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  5 лет назад

      Oh yeah that makes sense! I guess record labels are the closest thing music in general has to traditional publishers in a sense?

    • @AndromedaCripps
      @AndromedaCripps 5 лет назад

      @@TheClosetHistorian Definitely, but coming from like the classical side of things, there are big sheet music publishing houses just like there are big book publishing houses. And of course, if you're not with a big publisher... your music is never going to get played with a lot of extra publicity work on your end.
      Actually, recorded music is almost a bit better, because although having a traditional record label means the BEST publicity, the BEST whatever to get your music heard, self-publishing sites like CDBaby charge nominal fees and put your music on all streaming platforms. I guess that has more impact with music than say, digital books, because streaming is the primary way a lot of people get their music now. Before the internet self-publishing recordings meant actually cutting records or tapes (or later burning cds) and keeping a stock of them and trying to sell them person to person (or I guess to music stores?). Of course all that streaming is worth basically nothing in actual money (it's like .3 cents per listen or something crazy like that on Spotify) unless you have the publicity of a traditional record label haha.
      All this boring information is to say, we shouldn't have to deal with all this on our own!! And you know they aren't teaching students of literature or music how to be an entrepreneur. If they did, then maybe that degree would be worth more!

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  5 лет назад

      This is all super interesting! I have never thought about composition much outside of loving many film soundtracks, which I suppose is the most "pop culture" mass media form of classical music these days. Now I wonder, do sheet music publishers get your music in front of important conductors or orchestras etc for consideration?
      It's interesting with say pop music, because there you really can go from "self publishing" aka sharing your music on youtube, to having a huge music career if everything goes well.

    • @AndromedaCripps
      @AndromedaCripps 5 лет назад

      TheClosetHistorian I'm not sure about publishers getting you out to important orchestras. Most orchestras play the same 40 pieces (Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, etc.) every season unfortunately. Actually really hard to get new music (and music by women or PoC) programmed. My professor at my university actually started a Composers Diversity Database that basically lists as many LGBT+, Women, and PoC composers as we can find, as well as providing in an easy, searchable format the type of music they write, their website, and their age. Along with a lot of activism that's helping to get more new music in general in major orchestras!
      Anyway, the big advantage of publishers is that school ensembles look to major publishing sites to find a lot of their music. So it's really important in getting royalties from the large large number of high school, college, middle school, etc. ensembles. And community groups as well, probably. Although most people make their off of commissions which then end up on those sites. Take Eric Whitacre: he's a very famous choral composer these days (although he gets some schtick for basically writing the same 3 songs over and over again and just pumping out music like a factory). He gets a lot of commissions from wealthier school districts, and then those pieces become really popular online and when they go up on publisher sites, all the high school choir conductors rush to buy it. That's just one business model however.
      And yes, all it really takes is visibility/marketing for someone with "good music" (whatever that is lol) to make it in the recording world. Since anyone can publish music on every streaming site fir not very much. Of course, THAT requires good sound recording and mixing 😂. One of the most common extra jobs musicians learn. But it's really a whole separate beast lol

    I thought of a baby step for your query procrastination from your last side husselin video. Highlight all of the folks who interest you in Writer's Market (are there other references like that?). Make an email draft folder with a blank email in it for each submission and only start by putting in the email address of the person in and a subject line. Maybe just having a bunch of "stamped envelopes" ready to go will be one less hurdle to jump over when you have a query letter ready to go. :)

But he read sci-fi because he wanted to go into astronomy/astrophysics! Your points about self vs traditional publishing- YES YES YES!!!
    I do both and promoting self-published work can get extremely tiresome, and sometimes won't much go beyond your following on social media which is not great when it comes to crowdsourcing funds for printing if you decide to have physical copies. And if you do print, getting any distribution is a whole other hurdle with lots of headaches 'cause your stock just sits in your garage if you can't get your work in stores.
    Traditional publishing also has the added benefit of working with an editor that pushes you creatively when it comes to polishing your manuscript (yes you can get an editor with self-pub but you have to pay them out of pocket). ALSO Advances and royalties are nice....it's nice getting paid for a thing you did.

    Late watching this video, but I have to comment on writing degrees being irrelevant, because I did one. And my first reaction was, TOTALLY agree! And then on second thoughts I just have to add: irrelevant unless you want to get into screenwriting. That is so dependent on understanding formulae that I think wannabe screenwriters can really benefit. Otherwise, meh. Yes, characters telling you what happens in the story versus you telling them is totally a thing. I'm writing for myself in my spare time to practice storytelling to improve my video production skills because that's my passion. I don't plan on sharing my stories anywhere. But it's always the characters telling me who they are some of them won't even tell me their names until the story is almost over. It can be really annoying sometimes. LOL also I also get plopped smack dab in the middle of the story without knowing where the beginning is and how they got there but knows vaguely where the story is going? This happens to me all the time and then I have to backtrack and figure out where the crap story started! How does one get over this? Can one get over this? It's like when you're in a dream and you don't know what's going on but you're just along for the ride. I need to know how to conquer this so I can get better at the craft.

      I actually cut a bit from this video where I went into this a bit more, but this video was already so long! Another aspect of my not doing costuming on my channel is that since I'm not really feeling into it right now, but it is doing SUPER well (like, incredibly well!!!), it would feel disingenuous to do it right now just because I know it's popular. I would feel like I was only doing it for the #views if I were to do costuming right now personally, for me. I truly love historic costumes, but it is being done so well by other folks. I wouldn't want anyone to think I was jumping on it for the wrong reasons, and I kinda feel I would be?!? So I'm not gonna. If it feels right again sometime, or I find just the right project that I am really truly excited about, then I'd do it, but for now I feel like I'd be jumping on a bandwagon for the wrong reasons.

      I'm afraid I don't really know I guess? I rarely ever dream/remember my dreams at all, so not that for me for sure!

    Are you feeling depressed? I feel some sadness coming from you. It’s really common right now. You are usually pretty up beat, even though you are really matter of the fact. If I miss something. I think I’m just not getting it because you are so much younger. LOL But....I don’t think you appreciate yourself enough. Be excited, not everyone can write. It’s hard and requires tremendous self control , not to mention imagination!
