My grown-up children’s father was an alcoholic from aged 17. We begged, cried, offered help after help after help, shouted, ignored, bribed, and despaired. Nothing changed, he just got worse. Then a couple of years ago he became seriously ill with psoriasis and liver issues. I dropped everything to take him to A and E (we broke up when the kids were small but have remained like family) and at 55 he looked 80 - skin and bone, bleeding and scabbed, unable to walk I had to use a wheelchair to get him from car to hospital entrance.
The doctors said he had to stop drinking, there was nothing else they could do, his body was breaking down. I took him home with me for a week and we talked but nothing changed. Fast forward a few months and he went quiet for a week, no texts or calls to the kids or myself. We were beside ourselves with worry… then…. He appeared…..sober. He had gone through cold turkey on his own, in the caravan he lives in for 8 days of pure hell. He had locked the door on the world and sweated, screamed, sobbed, vomited and shook until on the 6th day he woke up calm and clear.
I would not recommend this approach to ANYONE. It was incredibly dangerous and I was furious at his lack of thought to what could have happened alone in that caravan. But, he chose his way when he was ready and did it. Two years later he is still sober and we are forever grateful for that.

Thank you both for your thought provoking summary of this outstanding programme. I had met Rupert on a couple of occasions. In all those meetings he was deep thinking, joyful, intelligent and always, like Will, sensitive. Will is an incredibly multi talented individual who Rupert told me many times he admired so much. He would be so proud of what Will and the family have achieved with this programme.
Negativity sometimes follows Will in social and tabloid media stories. Some will no doubt see this as just publicity to promote his own career. But you and I, and others affected by alcoholism issues, either directly or indirectly, know differently. Hats off to programme makers for making a tough topic so sensitively and kudos to Will for his courage discussing this and trying to support and help others. Thank you again for your views on the programme which I fully endorse. Rupert always wanted to help others. I am sure this programme will.

Thank you so much for your comments on the documentary. Very helpful. I haven't watched the programme yet but am going to. I lost my dad to this disease (alcoholism) and I myself have struggles with addiction.

Mark and Natalie, I happened onto one of your videos as I was looking for a Johnny Depp summary of the day's trial. I've really enjoyed your chats. Thank you, and I'm so glad to be able to, "Sit around the table " so to speak, and hear your thoughts. Very enjoyable. 😊

I'm going through the same just now with my Twin, she has been on heroin for years and as her Twin its affected me and my mum in ways I would not wish on my worst enemy! I can't even tell you how the past months have been! And yes all I want to do is push her away because my mental health is plagued with anxiety! She recently had no where to go so she is now with me and it's so hard but she at last has chosen to get help! It's going to be such a long road but I'm her twin and that bond only twins no.
My dad was a drinker and he beat my mum after drinking, he was a monster ..I witnessed things from such a young age no child should go through, many times my mum was in hospital because of what he did . I have never had a drink because my view was it turned people in to monsters! But I no that's not true now I was a innocent child so of course that's what I thought! It is a disease and sadly so many get trapped and turn to alcohol to block out life etc.
I really cried watching will young and I can not begin to imagine his pain , as a twin you have this unbreakable bond. So Incredibly sad for him and his family . ❤❤

It's such a touchy subject,I myself am like nadia where I can see from the alcoholic point of views and the suicides point of view, both mine and loved ones and damn it's such a hard hard thing to go through and live with afterwards. I didn't watch the programme as I know it would have triggered me and my past but kudos to Nads for watching it knowing she's been through both similar ways to me and I know it must have brought up a lot of emotions, guilt, memories and feelings for her whose why I didn't watch it. Much love to you all and thank you for the re cap of the programme x
