  • The Future of Society with Jamais Cascio. What are the biggest challenges facing humanity in the future? Futurist, author and speaker, Jamais Cascio lets us in on his concerns surrounding climate change, privacy and quantum computing.
Mike met Jamais back in March 2018 (time flies) at the Institute for the Future in Silicon Valley, where Jamais works as a research fellow.
    In this episode Mike asks:
    00:00 (Introduction)
01:29 Firstly, what is a futurist?
01:52 Why is this important? Why do we need to, what benefit does society get out of thinking about the future?
02:35 So we're talking about the future of society today. When you think about the current trends in the world, what are some of the greatest challenges?
04:10 What gives you hope today, looking at current trends, for what may happen in the future.
05:15 So we're here in Silicon Valley, so let's just touch on technology in society. Things like, once we get quantum computing happening.
06:02 Quantum computing is like the Millennium Bug all over again. Like the sky is falling?
06:45 All of this surveillance technology that hangs around our society now, it really seems to have eroded our individual autonomy to some extent. Is that something we should be worried about?
08:09 Is privacy an outdated concept?
09:02 Are you inspired by any Sci-fi movies, books, TV, novels in this space?
09:51 When we're thinking about the future of society, where are you at? Optimistic or pessimistic?
If you’re not familiar with Jamais, then this intriguing interview will have you seeking out more of his work. Thankfully there’s lots to find.
Selected by Foreign Policy magazine as one of the top 100 Global Thinkers, Jamais has written four books, including Hacking the Earth: Understanding the Consequences of Geoengineering, and has spoken on everything from emerging technologies to environmental dilemmas.
His ideas for building a more resilient society have been published in the Atlantic Monthly, the Wall Street Journal and Metropolis among others.

"I'm a short term pessimist, long term optimist." Love this conversation.

@Jamais - On the question about surveillance, you suggest that more cameras could make you safer in the case of someone trying to Deep Fake you somewhere else....but if they have the tech to do that, couldn't they find your other videos and edit those too?

@Brian - Thanks for your comment. What I imagine here is a diversity of cameras operated and owned by a variety of people (a crowd of cameraphones is the image that immediately comes to mind). A large number of official cameras would be more vulnerable than a mass of individual recordings. It’s not just more cameras, it’s more people recording, more places where videos are posted, different angles and details, videos recorded and not shared, etc.
If the antagonist is able to access and alter all of those videos in a way that synchronizes perfectly, you probably have a much bigger problem than just a deep faked video. -@Jamais

Great to hear that it's young people born after the year 2000 that give Jamais hope.

Hi Rockin Rollin n Trollin, thanks for your comment on the climate change discussion and we take your point. We filmed this interview with Jamais in March 2018 and it would be good to follow up with him now on how things have changed (or not) around the social and political differences currently in play on climate change. We'll let you know if we can get that conversation going.
