Mustang Transmission DESTROYED (5R55S Teardown, No Drive or Reverse)

  • Mustang GT 5R55S automatic transmission would not go in drive or reverse, but would drive while in 1-3. I started tearing down the transmission until I found the problem. I go over all the steps and make a homemade transmission pump puller in the process. Is it worth saving? Where do I go from here?

    I been watching tons of videos on this transmission. Overdrive gears are a big problem. My Sun and Planets were completely stripped on overdrive so I had lost 2nd, 4th, and 5th.
    I was told to order the Superior Shift Kit because it has you drill holes to supply more fluid to the overdrive section. Also, has a modified Flow Control Valve for the pump to prevent the valve from being stuck open. Was told that makes the transmission stop from working altogether if it gets stuck open.
    To be honest, if the sprag was busted like that the overdrive band might be worn. I'd recommend getting at least a gasket and seal rebuild kit. If the clutches don't seem worn and the clearances are in spec, you shouldn't need clutches.
    Also check the servo bores to see if there's any play in them. Some tranny experts resleeve them regardless. I took my case to the transmission shop to have them resleeve the servos because that tool kit is expensive. However, seeing your engineering skills you might be able to make your own tool for it.
    Lastly I been told to check the rubber molding on the servo pistons. They tend to get hard and flake overtime if your tranny overheats. BTW, the shift kit also solves the overheating issue because it updates the internal thermostat so that it keeps sending fluid to the radiator.
    Sorry for the long comment. I been doing months of research and asking questions 😅. Great to see other transmission DIY enthusiasts. Great job 👍!

    • @octanedrivendream
      @octanedrivendream  Год назад +1

      I will definitely look into the kit. I noticed the seals on the servos didn't look the greatest but they weren't leaking, will probably replace. Thanks for the info because I was unsure of which direction I wanted to go in.

    So, did you decide on doing a complete rebuild, just replacing the skrag, or manual swap? I didnt see any more videos about it.

    I do NOT advise it, but I have picked the entire transmission up (a 5r55s) and lightly bumped the face of the bellhousing onto a piece of cardboard and dropped the pump out with a few other gut pieces, but this can damage something. it does work in a pinch especially if you're as crazy as I am :D

      I have a 2006 Mustang GT I bought new and has been kept in excellent condition. Back in 2017 I started having intermittent shift flares in 2-3 whereby the car would suddenly act like it was in neutral. The problem became more frequent and in 2020 I replaced the solenoid pack and the valve body and I thought it was fixed but less than 1000 miles later the transmission quit altogether with no reverse or drive and it could only be moved in 3rd. I got a remanufactured transmission from Ford in 2021. It supposedly addresses all of the weak points of this transmission. There have been many failures of these transmissions. My car had less than 100,000 miles when this failure happened. With the new transmission now it runs like a champ. I have no idea what failed in the original transmission. It was sent back to the company that does the remanufacturing for Ford but I was told there was no way to investigate the failure. It would have been nice to know as I spent a lot or money on it. Any idea what might have happened as it was not the valve body or the solenoid pack as both had been replaced with brand new Ford parts?

      @@newfie-dean5803 I'm sorry to hear this happened. I do know there were a lot of problems in 2005-2007 models, and that a lot of stuff was ironed out in 2008-2009. @octanedrivendream  Год назад +1

      That's exactly what mines was doing. It would drive in 1,2,3 but not in drive or reverse. You probably have the same problem. When the Trans gets hot, it makes the cage of that bearing brittle and it breaks.
