    I'm a current CDL company semi truck driver for 5yrs(OTR & local). There are pros & cons for both. You find out what works for you. Remember-Your mirrors are set for you. I started my own authority last month, and planning on Ram 3500 - 35ft. My first choice was a 5500 because of the heavy duty set up. I would rather crawl before walk, build a solid business foundation, and grow at my pace. Shake them crabs off and keep truckln out that bucket.

    As a general rule, when you go boar 🐗 hunting alway bring more gun than you need, when replacing your how a/c buy one rated for 1000 sqft. More than your home and run it in mid range. You should always get more truck than you need when it comes to hauling. When failure occurs loaded down hill you'll be thankful

    you make a very good comment. It 3500s or 110 trucks aren't made constantly haul that much weight they in day out. I like how you put that out. So if someone has that for business they should get a truck that is made for hauling day in day out. And if you ain't loaded you ain't working. The roof ride is your punishment for you not working. I run a 2022 Ram 5500. Did the 1 ton trucks, they just didn't last, couldn't hold up to the weight. I run cdl, so I pack 20,000 pounds alot!! My wife and I decided to step up to the Ram 5500, best decision we made in cdl hotshottimg!! Truck is going on 8 months old, 80,000 miles, and running as smooth as the first day out, my opinion is, it is the absolute best choice on cdl hotshotting, hands down!! And I also get between 9 to 11 miles to the gallon, I actually hauled a load that weighed 21,700 pounds, stayed right at 9.6, even over the rockies... I've never seen 6 miles to the gallon in 8 months running it..

Their is no comparison to cdl and non cdl because of the weight. He went out of business because of insurance, then that means he had some guy’s that had bad driving records. Outside of the context of the video, my insurance went up over $500 & I literally have a spotless record. It has 0 to do with the driver. Normal car insurance has went up on ppl who never had a wreck. Fact is, the supply shortage has made parts & everything else more expensive. The insurance companies are passing it onto us. Don't blame drivers.

      As a cdl hotshot driver all of my best loads are 15-18k hauling heavy-ish equipment and I work mostly in the NW (where everyone says to stay away from) so I pull a lot of hills. I have a ram 3500 and love it but sometimes I really wish I had a 5500! Better brakes, beefier axles, lower gears, and 19.5 commercial tires! If I stay in the business my next truck will be a 5500 for all of those reasons. Both are good trucks but with a cdl I think you made the right choice. Keep up the good work!

    Yea Baby!! I have 2x 3500's> I drive one and the other is always in the shop. I had an offer to buy a new RAM 4500 Laramie, but the recession is causing the freight to disappear. The new RAM 4500 Laramie is $80,000 plus the dealer wants an additional $5,000 ADP. $85,000 works out to $1,000 to $1,100 per month. I can handle it if I et rid of the older trucks BUT freight looks bad at this point. I'm having cancellations and not working steady in the last 2 weeks.
    There are a lot of Hot Shots in the Pacific North West and 0 loads on the load board. Plenty of cars and trucks to haul but it's hard to get the rate higher than $2.50 per mile for 2x cars. Want to do it (get rid of the old trucks and buy new) but if things get worse I can sell off some equipment and keep a truck and trailer and survive.
    Not certain what to do. One truck has 230,000 miles and the other 370,000 miles, Maintenance exceeds the monthly new truck payment BUT I see guys out there doing a haul for Diesel money and it might get worse. Not certain I can compete.

    With a modern 3500 DRW you are going to be over the CDL threshold even with a light duty gooseneck with a pair of 7k axles under it. So stepping up to a 5500 or 2-axle class 8 is kind of whatever floats your boat and works for you. Non-CDL only makes sense with a 10-11.5k GVWR SRW pickup with a 26k plate and a medium sized trailer 28-35' with a pair of 7k or 8k axles and light as possible. if the trailer is too heavy it does nothing but put more strain on the truck and cuts into your payload.

    After getting my CDL earlier this year, I wanted to step up my weight capacity. Was unable to find a "cheap" semi so I bought a F450 with a blown engine. I had an engine rebuild ongoing and decided to use that engine for the 450. Next move would be to purchase a semi sleeper for it. With the 450 I was looking to haul 40 or 53 foot loads around 20K. Finding a trailer for CDL loads would be the real problem. The best trailer for that setup would be the Diamond C 53' stepdeck like Banks Shipping uses. Searching the loadboard, there were 18 non-CDL loads available and 82 loads for that 450 setup (20K, 40'). Not a huge gain, but still more to choose from. When I changed the parameters for a semi, then I found 8057 loads. The only way I would run a CDL hotshot setup is if I can do it cheap, and as a stepping stone to semi.

    • @HotshotMacc
      @HotshotMacc  Год назад +3

      Man that was a great example! And that's the path I'm on as a stepping stone to the Semi. Im waiting on my trailer so I'm able to scale up to 20k. But sounds like you did the a smart move with the 450 purchase. Good stuff man! Thanks for the feedback!

      @@HotshotMacc Well, that was the plan but... See, I started this business to make it easier to care for my elderly Mom who had dementia. She passed last month so my project is on hold. As her condition worsened, I was unable to haul loads and now I'm jumping back in. After I get her estate settled, I will be able to buy a semi. Working on the 450 while staying home was a way to "pay" myself as the finished truck will be worth far more that what I have into it. My plan was to sell my 350 and use my 30' GN until I could get a stepdeck - which could also be used with a semi. So build the 450, sell the 350. Use the 30' GN, buy 53' SD and sell the GN. Buy a semi and sell the 450, buy a full SD and sell the small SD. Stepping stones to the max while reinvesting in the business.

    Macc! Good video, good points, I will say I got my CDL a while back and was waiting to buy a new truck I did a lot of research for weeks on the ram the Ford the Chevy and ultimately I decided to go with a new 3500 Dually Chevy.
    My concerns were like yours about weight ratings capacities looking at the ram 5500 to the 3500 Chevy my GCWR is 40,000 where yours is 43, Another deciding factor was that the rear end on my new Chevy is rated at 10,500 not to bad for a 1ton compared to ford and rams rear ends. One more deciding factor was the ram dealer told me that the 4500 and 5500 Needed special tools depending on what was needing done such as alignments and other stuff so from a maintenance and repair perspective going with the 1 ton made more sense to me. I plan to run a 25900 trailer with my truck being able to load to axle capacity at 40000, same as the manufacturer max gcvwr
    Touching on the semi stepping stone option..
    i have zero desire to run a semi, that’s all my dad has ever done, his company is successful and has been for years but driving a big truck doesn’t seem enjoyable to me, i dont feel like this is work, running a pickup that’s comfortable with a trailer is what i enjoy doing. With my family along sometimes being able to go into places that semis can’t go i enjoy. Not sure why everyone thinks the end game for hotshot is a semi. Because that’s not even on my radar. I enjoy what i do in a pickup.

    When you got the 5500 my first thought was, why not a single axel sleeper? But for that price I think you're spot on. As for cdl vs non-cdl, I'm getting ready to do non-cdl and see a lot of loads that are just out of reach for the non set up. Your set up seams like a really good on between whether you stay with this or move up to a semi. Be safe out there and keep that content coming.

      @HotshotMacc  Год назад +2

      Man I did consider a single axle with sleeper just couldn't find one that made sense financially based on condition. But I think once I pair the 5500 with the next trailer I'll be doing much better. Semi is definitely in the plans but only for heavy haul and when the time is right for us. Non cdl loads can get scarce, but it's all in the hustle as well. Appreciate the feedback brother! be safe as well!

    I agree that not everything happens the same way for everyone. Keep doing what is working for you Mr. Macc. My question is what is the more durable of the 2500-3500 trucks? I would've went with the 5500 based on being able to extend your options on freight weight to be towed. You won't be capped at weight compared to 2500/3500 trucks. I'm still reading up on the more durable to go with.

Guys do 8-12k with a fully equipped trailer and 12-15k axes, winch, hydraulic dove etc. But again it all depends on your capabilities. Not everyone will do it consistently.

    4.44 is the sweet spot on those. Turning 2000 rpms at 65 mph is right where those small motors like to be. 4.88 is a little slow at that rpm and 4.10 might be a little tall with 19.5" tires.

      I couldn’t agree with you more brother 🫡💯

  • @5inchborespaceing
    @5inchborespaceing Год назад +2

    We run a 5500 with 4.88 gears because we to do heavy. 59,500lbs gross. 5500 is safer because you can haul heavier tong weight compared to your trailer weight. At 45,000lbs gross you need to run 65 mph and you will get 9-10 mpg. The 3500 only gets better mpg unloaded and very light loads. Under cdl weight. Under cdl pay. I will post the gear ratio breakdown that I posted on another RUclips channel. Also the bigger brakes are safer.

    • @5inchborespaceing
      @5inchborespaceing Год назад

      The 3500 4:10 gear holds 2200 RPM in direct drive at 52.2 MPH. The 5500 with 4:44 gears holds 2480 RPM. The 5500 with 4.88 holds 2725 RPM at the same MPH. The lower gear puts the engine under less load "stress" at higher weights. Also with higher trailer weights it hard to legally scale a 3500 because you can't get enough trailer tong weight and keep 10% over the truck rear tires. If you load your Diamond C to 34,000 over the trailer tires you can add 10,000 lbs to the tong putting the drive axle at 13,500. That's 44,000 lbs towed with a trailer weight on a 44 ft hydraulic ramp trailer weighing 11,620 lbs. That's 32,386 lbs you can legally and safely load on the trailer and scale. It gets harder with the axle weight capacity of the 3500. Also moving this type of weight you want the bigger rear diff and wheel bearing. Not to mention brakes. Also direct drive is 4th gear. The 1:0 gear ratio in the trans.

    • @5inchborespaceing
      @5inchborespaceing Год назад

      I need to add one more thing. The trailer and coupler are rated at 40,000 lbs. So you can get yourself into a spot that you can legally scale more than the trailer coupler and trailer is rated at. But the you add fuel tanks and tools to the bed of the 5500 the trailer weight capacity comes down. So you can add 4,000 lbs of fuel and tools and tow 40,000lbs. Minus 11,620 lbs trailer is 28,380lbs all day legal tow rating. This gives you max volume on the trailer. You could tow an extra 4,000lbs with a shorter trailer or leave off some options. Mine is loaded.

    The 5500 to me makes the most sense for a CDL setup. Stronger frames, and heavier duty suspension which equals you can haul and handle more weigh if need be that most 3500 can take, and I believe correct me if I'm wrong has a little more room inside. Can you be my mentor? I’ve owned a semi for a couple of years and gave it back due to many issues. I buying a 2021 Ford F-350 dully, can you be my
    Mentor I have no idea with hotshot besides buy this truck and calling this company back to rent their trailer and also get dispatched by them. Any information greatly appreciated. Wasn’t sure where to message you as instagram doesn’t show you posted any time recently. Thanks Mac much respect.

      Hey Paul, unfortunately I'm not mentoring as of yet but I do offer consultations if you'd like to set something up for us to talk for an hour. Are you starting out with your own authority of leasing on?

    I run a new ram 3500 with the standard Cummins and 4.10 gears. I usually get 9-11 but pulling iso tanks I get 6mpg at 63mph.
    I agree that running cdl hotshot is a babystep while I try and get myself into a semi, and that I’m still competing against Non-CDL guys. The difference is that because I can haul more I can get freight they can’t and I stay more consistently loaded. I started last year with a ram 2500 and 30’ trailer, moved up to an f250 with a 40’ trailer, and now my cdl setup with a 40’ trailer. Each step of the way I saw a higher level of consistency. I lost most of July because my trailer broke and I was waiting for a new trailer under warranty and my weekly average for the year is still right around $5k.

      Appreciate the transparency Jon! Definitely the right way to do it in my eyes and take those baby steps. Its all preferences and its all up to the individual on what they choose. congrats on the growth man that shows you have done your due diligence and moved smart. Thats not a bad average too depending on the lanes your running and how long your staying out. Keep grinding bro, appreciate the support brotha 💪🏽💯

    Like you said it depends on your operation and what works best for you. I personally run a 3500 non cdl and that works for me. It sounds like you did your homework and “You” ( which is all that really matters ) know what works best for your operation. I’m not bashing TP, but you gotta let people live there own lives and not criticize or input your 2 cents , because chances are you don’t know the whole story. Great video bro take care

    MACC What is the max you can haul? With your 5500

    • @HotshotMacc

      I can haul 35k safely with the truck but with the trailer I have I'm putting 16k max on it.

    Mannnnn Macc I been waiting for this to come out because I’m in the process of building a 5500 but they’re saying it will still be a few more days and I’ll have to order the 23’ model… I’ve been torn between the 35-45 or 55 and I still don’t know. I got CDL but at the same time not sure if I want or would even be able to stay heavy like that all the time. Also people keep saying delete and tune it but I’m not trying to get jammed up by DOT so 🤷‍♂️

    • @HotshotMacc
      @HotshotMacc  Год назад

      Whats good bro! It definitely also depends on what trailer you plan on pairing with the truck. If your gonna go with 12-15k axles then definitely go with the bigger truck. Make sure you get that 4:44 gears to keep you fuel economy up! Wish I could delete myself but DOT and voiding the warranty is what's making the decision tough. Thinking about a ghost delete tho 😬
