Dragon's Dogma 2: Does The New Patch Fix The Game? All Systems Tested
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 5 июн 2024
- Dragon's Dogma 2 launched with a range of issues - most notably inconsistent frame-rates, extremely heavy CPU limitations and broken checkerboarding on Xbox Series consoles. A new patch recently arrived that delivers a lot of welcome changes - but key issues still need to be addressed. Oliver Mackenzie reports on this one.

Shame, been holding off to see whether PC or PS5 improve to a point I'd be willing to buy on either
@@RobbieB2606 wait for ultimate denuvo-less pc version
SPOILER! ;)
How's that a shame? Did you really expect that to happen within a timespan of 2 weeks? I can already tell you that, if there will be a best time to buy the game, it'll be after the DLC for DD2 has released and you can get the complete package for half the price of this, unfortunately, unfinished game.@@RobbieB2606
They straight up said this patch was not going to focus on performance. They said the next patch is performance based across the board.
Capcom must be very desperate letting NPCs pop in that close to the camera. As such it would be foolish to expect any significant CPU-bound performance increases anytime soon.
Yep, they might be able to get it to a consistent 30, but it's never going to be 60 fps on consoles. PC has an easy chance at 4k with stronger CPUs in the cities, if they can solve the CPU optimization woes. With the frame gen mod, I am hitting 140 fps in much of the wilderness areas with a 4090 and a 13700k at 3440x1440p.
Someone mentioned that it was similar to the issues in BG3 act 3, where moving your character would always create a bottleneck as every single NPC had to process the new data. If it is similar, I imagine it could be fixed.
I'd love if DF made a 5 second video with Oliver just saying "NO"
wrong channel
@@DSRT888 one of the most famous papers in control theory has 3 words in its main text: "There aren't any", which is essentially a reply to the title in the same way that this "No" would have been.
My point is: the precedence is there for scholarly-ish publications to be snippy
@@mechanicalmonk2020 I can still evenly and thoughtfully reply with "wrong channel".
Comparatively speaking, the title couldn't have been named "It didn't fix the game" by DF finding that you could actually improve performance by turning off ray tracing in some areas of the game.
Besides, a snarky remark would not fit this channel, but also wouldn't be congruent with your argument as I doubt this paper you've mentioned is no longer than the title itself. I don't have the academics to argue the meaning of your paper. So I could be misunderstanding you.
Anything that does not reach pc standards is not good enough for him, it seems.
@@mechanicalmonk2020regardless, snark like that appeals to 4chan users and mental children which isn't who DF is marketing to. Additionally you could make that same "joke" about dozens of games every year. Nothing about DD2 merits that response video any more than any other game. Would just serve to dilute the channel and alienate their core audience.
Be patient guys. Next year the game will be working properly and with a good discount.
Being a patient gamer is the only good way to interact with AAA games these days.
Why should we buy Dragons Dogma 2, If we could just buy Dragons Dogma 2 Definitve Edition with all DLCs in 2025?
There's better games out there that don't give you dog shit performance at a lower cost.

The sad thing is most people will have finished the game in the first 2 weeks. You're better off waiting on games to go on sale in 6 months and play a superior patched version for less money.
If devs want you to pay the full 80 dollar price they should prioritize launch performance.
I've been playing since launch and I've got 46hrs played so far but have so much left to do, not even got to the desert area yet.
It's not 80 dollars...
@@thenotreallyfunnyguy 70 or 80 it doesn't matter, what matters is that you're paying the most for the worst version of the product while you could just wait and get it 30-50% off in half a year for the best version. You get shafted buying AAA games on release while paying full price.
@@thenotreallyfunnyguy - In Canada, the game costs over $90 Dollars.
Maybe you just let people decide for themselves for nobody needs your advice. Did finish the game last weekend. Had a blast with the game. Yeah performance could be better but I don´t care and I certainly don´t have to worry about 50, 60 or 300 bucks. Luckily.
Npc draw distance is hilariously bad and just leaves me scratching my head how this is even acceptable? ive never seen such jarring pop in like that ever in any game ever made.

Yes, it's embarrassing. Hard to say it's a technically advanced game when that's happening all around the player at all times
It's not even that bad on pc some npc pop in close but distant npc are always there this inconsistencies between platforms is odd
On PC most don't, but some do.
Developer: "Let's fix the fps by having a completely empty city with no people until they materialize right in front of your face, even closer than FFXII on PS2." 👍
That's a modern, multi-hundred-million-dollar game with graphics on par with the PlayStation 4 era, featuring a $70 price tag.
Cyberpunk 2077 answer to get them to work on ps4 and Xbox one. Remove all npc, make the game feel empty, and boom fixed game. Let's also change it for all future platforms where it would run just fine.

even when the game shows you 70-100fps, it still feels like 20-30... i can't play this game with a 5900x , 64gb ram and a 4070 super without feeling like it lags:))
Not the fault of the devs. The consoles don’t have strong enough CPUs.

An issue I've encountered in the latest patch on PC is that opening the inventory with vendors or in your dwelling, causes massive performance loss and VRAM problems for an extended period. Also DLSS seems broken, it can disable itself during certain interactions like hiring pawns in the Rift. Also had ray tracing randomly break, requiring exiting to the menu and loading the game again.
either capacom qc team didnt detected it or
Hmm, I haven't seen any of those issues. What are your specs?
@@JoshuaCBrown nothing to do with specs, I have read reviews many people facing these issues on steam and nexus mods..
@@Ghost-pb4ts The only big issues I've seen are the obvious performance issues with framerate and frametimes and crashing when using DLSS frame gen mod. I haven't seen anything beyond that and I went through the first 10 pages in the Steam discussion forums. Can you link one?
Look to you're left bud, you'll see plenty of problems
Its time for the consoles to add some kind of system level FPS limit, like we have on the PC/Deck. Most game developers are clearly not very good at it.
Hey now, don't question the devs. They're not even making full use of the PS5 hardware yet or something
System/driver side caps always add latency.
Yeah, I don't get why so many developers are having such issues with frame times when the likes of Valve can do it at a system level that seems to work far better on a lot of games.
On PC, being it's flexible in how games run, it's understandable why these issues can be fixed, but on consoles, I do wonder if Sony or Microsoft could do a system level work around for this, I'm going to assume, probably no because of the nature of consoles and low level programming, which probably restricts what can be done outside the devs fixing the issue themselves.
Like console scrubs care about that. I always feel the atrocious input delay on my PS5 when switching to it from my PC, yet I have never heard a console scrub complain about it. @concinnus
@DBTHEPLUG That's cause the games you are testing are trash. An example of this would be COD where it is extremely responsive on console since ps4 and xbox one. While Destiny 2 on Xbox series x has more input lag than Geforce now (cloud gaming) at 60 fps
I really like the list you did at the end. It's nice to have a literal conclusion when you're discussing complex topics.
"It's possible to bump into invisible NPCs when you sprint around the city" is an amazing sentence. This is a 70 euro AAA game in the year of our lord 2024. Think about that for a second.
I WANT to use the RTGI. I love the natural lighting that it provides. But the the performance gains are hard to ignore.
Yea I played with RT off and the game looked too drab. It’s obviously designed with RTGI in mind. I’ll wait for the next performance patch
There is barely an uplift in cities.

Thank you for this detailed description.
Holy ghosting Batman. I had never noticed so much ghosting around a game character in a RUclips video before. It looks like a significant issue (besides the melee npc pop-in)
Instead of Ray-tracing they should have focused on better CPU utilization, better textures and geometry and animations.
Nah that stuff takes too much effort, they'd rather just hit the RT toggle button in the editor than actually try to make something unique and interesting.
Ikr, even the first game had literally the best Ai companions i've ever seen in a game, and you could run it on a potato, now they're asking for an arm and a leg for the same thing? maybe slightly better? ridiculous
Problem is that the expectations for Ray tracing dwarf all those other things you mentioned. Developers feel like they need to hit it as a checklist for marketing.
this patch wasnt supposed to make any changes to performance, thats next patch, this was just save game and some small issues
@wolfstorm5394 The AI in this one feels worse despite what reviews have said. My pawns have went over edges going after harpies idk how many times now.
I tried it with ray-tracing off and OK the frame-rate is much improved but NPC pop-in is still comically bad. I’m going to hold off on this one until more fundamental patches come in. Every time I get stung I say “I’m never buying on release day again” but every time a new game comes out my monkey brain tells me to buy it

@@KoozwadExactly. Video games prices drop really fast. Especially if it’s for single player games, you don’t need to buy it as it comes out ( no need to get good fast).
You are part of the problem then. Though i understand your side, i've been thinking that current games aren't worth the launch price with only a couple of exceptions. But as long as game companies keep getting a bunch of money on launch, games will most likely be keep being launched with issues that *might* get patched later.

Nice that you follow-up on the game to look at the first patch, though I still wish there was a proper deep-dive (especially in the PC version) to highlight all the issues with the visual presentation on a technical point to highlight to Capcom what to fix.
It's so crazy how the motion blur setting did almost NOTHING for me
"New quality of life features such as starting a New Game", a single player game that has to add that to their patch notes shouldn't be put up on the store front

Would really appreciate some advice for my problem atm.
My pc ain't that good. But I am not having that much problem with low settings.
But the problem I am facing is that not everything is loading quick or moderate speed.
For example, let's say, the forest has loaded. I can walk there but items/ingredients or enemies hasn't loaded in.
After a while, suddenly most things load in.
But the range is small. So again when I am trying to go further, I have to wait till everything loads in.
My performance improved a lot in the capital with the patch, before i was barelly maintaining 30fps (Ryzen 5 5600), now its 45+
Many reviewers have said this is the worst performance of any game on current gen consoles with fps often dropping into the low 20's... 🤔
Giant cap
Anything using UE5 sucks on consoles, too, like Immortals of Avium. They are too weak for UE5.
@Sh1ft3r1 it doesn't, and it's a first party game which is hilarious
@Sh1ft3r1 Scarlet and Violet? You're right, it's worse. You should check DF's review on it, it's probably the harshest one on this channel. Also done by Oliver.
Like DD2 is terrible performance wise but Pokemon S&V is probably one of the worst performing games in modern memory
Can't even include the Switch games that run terribly either, because the Switch is 8th generation, not 9th. A stance I firmly disagree with (It flies in the face of the 5th Generation's power gap for their stupid reasoning), but it is the official one.
No 60 fps mode on a $70 AAA game on release is crazyyyy
The swing in performance in this game on Max Shadows vs the next best setting is pretty wild on top of all the CPU and simulation issues. Just dropping shadows down a notch can double your framerate in a lot of places assuming you're not CPU bound there.
When are you going to do a decent analysis of how the new patch is performing on PC, with various configurations?
So how doese Denuvo play into this? Keep hearing this affects performance, yet it's never included in these closures.
AFAIK Denuvo impacts your cpu by compressing and decrypting code while the game is running. The exact specifics aren't entirely known but that's the general gist.
There's no world in which checking your licence hundreds or thousands of times during a play session doesn't impact your cpu and so your performance
Games that have been cracked with Denuvo such as Resident Evil 7 run better without it. (I believe there's a video about it in this channel)
There are examples of devs that admitted Denuvo caused performance issues such as with Tekken 7.
Denuvo is malware and the simple fact that it locked people who deleted their DD2 saves out of being able to play the game because of a 5 machine activation limit should be enough on it's own to prove it.
@@capablanc All the more reason it should be a pertinent-aspect of a review like this. That is a FACTOR and its being excluded which means full-closure is not given.
I don't think Denuvo is used on consoles
@@capablanc denuvo isn't used on consoles, and performance on consoles is similarly bad. There are games where denuvo does not affect performance to a noticeable degree, you just don't hear that since it's not a story, you only hear about it when the implementation is bad.
That is to say, denuvo can be used in a non noticeable manner. However, it seems they have some problems leading to bad implementations (possibly bad documentation), since there are a number of games where as you say removing it helped performance.
And yes, I too don't like drm and especially invasive drm. I'd much prefer nobody using it.
denuvo probably doesn't play into this because your PC is constantly coding and encoding thousands of processes and applications per minute and pretending that denuvo is to blame when it's consistent CPU limitations on every platform and having even the best CPU on the market doesn't demonstrably improve things probably means it's the game, and that if denuvo is doing anything it's probably poorly implemented/shoehorned in as cheaply as possible. If DF isn't talking about it, it's probably because the performance factors are basically indistinguishable from typical variance in fps that all PC's have because PC's do a lot of shit in the background while youre gaming and sometimes that knocks a couple of frames or dips your frametime.
if denuvo was actually causing issues with videogames beyond the inherent game preserving hurdles DRM causes as a whole, why can't I find any actual rigorous hardware testing between cracked and uncracked denuvo games ? All i've ever seen are things like oh this bug that is caused by an error with connecting to the servers disappears when I'm playing my pirated copy! Bugs caused by licensing errors or logging into game servers for stats and tracking player data will never slow me down, and I also cannot access any of the online portions or see leaderboards or most standard game functionality centered around using the internet....what's the benefit of making a game that is easily crackable on day 1? Most of a games sales are the first few months of release, and that's exactly how long most denuvo games take to crack now or even longer. I
Its fascinating to know that dragon's dogma 2 have fewer developers compare to recent resident evil 4, street fighter 6 and monster hunter. Does Capcom have less faith on dragon's dogma? Then again, the sales number is very good unless Capcom has unrealistic expectation.

Wait, you used a mod that force 30fps limit, and you are getting stable 60fps?
I just don’t understand why they (any many other developers) don’t give us a 1440p option (even if it’s upscaled) so we can get at least 40fps and VRR support. Both MS and Sony stood there when they revealed this generation of consoles almost yelling “60 frames per second” in our faces. The first year was good, in terms of fps in games. But now we are back at 30 again..

Holding off on PS5 until the frame rate is fixed.
Spoiler : it won’t
The first games framerate wasnt fixed until it got remastered
I've played through it on ps5 since release and I haven't noticed any issues.
I think it's a very beautiful game on PS5. After all the blury mess, it's a nice change.
I agree. I love how every bit of the game looks
No mention of that character ghosting? Or is that an intentional effect?
You mean on XSX? It's the broken image reconstruction --> 10:02.
In second large city there's basically no issues like on first one. So I highly suspect that problem lies more in structure of level in first major city. NPCs amount is basically the same in second city. But no stutter, no major fps drop.
City performance would be nice, but you spend maybe 3 to 5% of your entire playthrough in those areas, so it's not the end of the world compared to the higher frame rate elsewhere for me personally.
I just beat the game and i agree but its definitely more than 5%
it's way more than that but it certainly didn't bother me as much as I initially thought it would
How bad is it when fighting multiple enemies? Or the frame only bad when you go in the city?
This patch was a joke. All these things in the patch are hotfixes that are done in 3 hour work. Riot games and Blizzard levels of incompetence.
half an hour
Since latest patch with a 7800x3d 4090 pc setup, its very playable & well above 60fps at native 4k max settings most of the time, however it can still drop into the high 40s in certain town areas, but for me the most noticeable issue is the uneven frame pacing even at over 100fps it just doesn’t feel smooth.
Cam someone explain why the 30fps limit is bad? I thought the rule of thumb was that frame times for a straight 30 fps performance is better than variable fps.
I guess the video should have included a frame time comparison.
LMFAO! A whole 2fps gain in the city. Such optimization, much performance.
I honestly worried that this game is so broken on a technical level that it might not even be fully fixable.
It could maybe run better with some updates, but it probably won't get much better than this.
What timestamp is the thumbnail taken?
It bugs me that I only have a 1080p TV but can’t lower the native resolution of games to 1080p for performance gains on PS5
This video seems early since Capcom officially stated the patch would not address the majority of the issues. Functions more to cultivate the hate farm again than actually evaluate progress made.
I tapped out. Really enjoyed my first 15 or so hours, but got sick of the gameplay/performance issues.
You saved yourself. The endgame is boring, and the combat only gets easier, and it does not matter.
The game is sorta short compared to other open world games. I think it wouldnt be a waste to push through
8:32 Whoa! Startled me there!
I’ll continue to wait for a sale. Even with a R5 7600X and RTX4080, this still looks a bit rough.
Pretty pathetic when you look at games like Forbidden West.
Hmm I’ll give em a couple of months if performance is not improved I’ll buy it secondhand for ps6.
I feel like it should be mentioned that this isn’t supposed to be the big performance patch and there will be one later, it says in those patch notes
Since the last couple videos of Digital Foundry i see frametimes in a complete new light. Present Mon Wil change the Benchmark landscape :D
People always learn the hard way. Performance with great art direction over eye candy extras that tank performance and take the fun out the experience.
lol this game does not look good enough to warrant the performance dip
@@anthonymorales5815have you seen the magic effects? there's plenty of eye candy taxing the machines.
@@lukemoonwalker8444 Yeah, no, sorry. I've seen much better in ff16 be r e a l bro
@lukemoonwalker8444 and it run in 60 this game garbo
@@lukemoonwalker8444ah yes, you could see in the video we just watched the crazy amount of magic he was casting while walking through the city at 26fps! Yeah, you're right, that must be what did it! I'm sure as soon as he stopped with all the crazy spells we were witnessing it jumped straight up 240fps, they must have just forgotten to include that footage.....
still can't comprehend digital foundry's love for motion blur, it just ruins the image completely
What? You some kinda weirdo that actually wants to see the games you play? 🤭
Motion blur and dof is for insane people
The patch notes literally state “*These options won't affect frame rate significantly. Improvements to frame rate are planned for future updates.” It’s even on screen in this video.
What's best on Series X if I have a VRR TV?
I used to beg for co-op in this game, but seeing how bad it runs even solo, imagine the mess in co-op.
It would be way more fun, but the performance would be bad. Unfortunately, Capcom doesn't give too much attention to this franchise as it does with Monster Hunter
30fps is a NO 😂 I'll skip until it runs 60 and is on discount.
Capcom has hardcoded in a 30 NPC and 30 enemy on screen limit. This explains the pop in. On PC, there's a mod that allows you to increase these limits, which totally fixes the issue.
How low frame-rate compesation it's work?
Man I'm glad I didn't pick this game up yet.
It was a refund on PC for me. Sadly. I was beyond excited for it. But I’m not gna push myself to enjoy a game that clearly has some serious performance issues. Yet again, we get a “launch now, fix later” AAA launch. Shit is beyond old at this point
@@XiLock_AlotxI’m more surprised you bought a game at launch. This practice is so common, that buy the time a game is fixed (if that), it’ll be on discount anyway.
@@XiLock_Alotx What's your specs?
@@mrshmuga9Just wait 6 to 8 months for the beta testing to end. Maybe get it a lot cheaper also.
If you picked it up for consoles, you would really love it, as it's an amazing game.
This game is a prime example that a specialized engine is not necessarily as versatile as a multifaceted, one such as Unreal 5.
precisely
You just said "specialized"
So what is the purpose of the entire comment.
Of course it isn't as versatile. It was built for the RE games and now they're pushing it to do open world. Which it mostly delivers.
@@phant0mdummy to validate what digital foundry said in a previous podcast.
It’s still curious that so many developers ignore 120hz output for PS5 to let LFC be used.
Puredark made a mod as well, can you check that one as well for PC
Why does this game look like an RTX Remix version of a late PS3 / early PS4 era game. The lighting does look great in places but the asset quality, especially on buildings and furniture is shockingly bad.
They’ve already released mods for that on PC
It looks like RTX Remix version of PC version of DD1, basically.
but here's capcom argument
this is a 70$ game struggling to run at 30fps in current gen
so check your eyes
That NPC draw distance is criminal. How are games releasing that look worse and run worse than games from 10 years ago. Absolute insanity.
i think you don't know what you are talking about
It's a bad engine for open worlds
They did say the recent parch will not improve the fps. But they gotta fix this asap.
While Capcoms Engine is capable of producing nice looking scenes it still seams to be out of it’s comfort zone in this game…
We saw that in Street Fighters Story mode already 😕
If ray tracing is off, does it affect the resolution? Does it increase the resolution?
Started forbidden west after DD2. It whipes the floor with DD2.
Two completely different games lol
Every half decent open world game wipes the floor with DD2…
Its terrible woke writing really sucks, though. Same as the latest Spiderman ¬¬
Dragons Dogma is pretty crap.
HFW is like a generic Sony game while DD2 is something unique and interesting and I would pick it ten times out of ten
tech issues aside this is just a bad sequel in many ways. so many steps back from dd1 very disappointing.
Lmfao no
I get the endgame arguments but otherwise the game is equal to the original. Cry somewhere else
We must waiting for the future patches from Capcom for much better Frame-Rates I hope
Capcom: skip to @10:29 - there’s your cheat sheet on what is absolutely critical to fix ;)
Like Jedi Survivor and Hogwarts Legacy, it's a CPU and/or engine related performance issue which will never be patched, simple as that.
Imo this is worse than both of those games.
But Jedi and hogwarts did infact get patched and play way better now
Jedi Survivor is very good now!!
@@gavinderulo12doesn't even come close to Jedi's issues, haven't followed HL so can't comment on that one.
@@lukemoonwalker8444 I finished Jedi Survivor and had 60fps literally everywhere except around the koboh cantina (and even there it was nowhere near as bad as DD2).
This game looks bad and 30 FPS is a joke.
It's very unfortunate about the lesser image quality on XSX. This stuff happened with their previous games too but was fixed. Ideally they'd get it right from the get go. I do hope they fix it. It shouldn't be inferior.
Im running a 4070 with a 7900x3d settings on quality/ultra, zero issues. Around 150fps after update drops to around 120 in the main city
It's funny how nothing has changed since Dragon's Dogma, it's just the same game with better lighning. The framerate is the same, it doesn't look that good, the resolution is technically better but look as blurry if not blurrier than on PS3, and the gameplay is basically the same.
I love the artstyle
"I recommend keeping motion blur on" just who do you think you are
Reasonable at 30fps
@@rhoharanehell no lmao
On PlayStation I shut off RT and limited the resolution to 1080p via the PlayStations settings and it seems to have given me a very close 60fps, its mid 50s
Did they still not fix the upscaling on Xbox vs PS5? Unbelievable.
REMOVE DENUVO!
Lol they won't, digital foundry didn't make the game
De nuevo De nuvo ?😂🇪🇦
@@DavidAlfredoGuisado removo denuvo
Can't wait for Empress to crack this game so I can apply it to my legit copy.
I hate that that is a sentence I had to even say.
Empress is gone from the cracking scene.
@@GaliosUA She literally isn't lol
I really do wish developers will do the 1080p with ray tracing option that Insomniac did with the latest Ratchet and Clank. I played that game on that setting and it was perfectly fine for me.
Anyone who bought a series s doesn't deserve good picture quality in my opinion
