I am disappointed to see some negative comments. You are likely the same ones who can't play a C major scale. This is a complex, creative, and emotional solo, a lot of shifts in modes and keys, superb scale runs, and not one sour note. Not to mention mastery of the synthesizer itself. I have all Tony's music and met him in person. Go and study piano and music theory for 30+ years to get to Tony's level, and then talk. 👍
I keep coming back to this recording - its one of the highlights of this Steve Vai live release - Tony's an amazing musician, more than a multi-instrumentalist, he's amazing at keyboards and guitar. Also, his keyboard playing, even this mostly improvised stuff is very 'guitaristic' and very cool. Some beautiful sounds coming out of his rig on this particular recording too, that 'ocean of notes' segment is beautiful.
Tony is not only an absolute beast on guitar (He’d give Steve a run for his money on his worst day) but he’s a phenomenal piano/keyboard player too! Tony’s contributions to Planet X are so gorgeous and incomparable. He’s just a pure musical talent and a sweet guy! One of 3 aliens from the Planet X. Derek, Tony and Virgil!
There are some musicians in this world, who inspire you to pick up an instrument, learn it and master it. Then there are others that make you think "what's the point?", then wanna cut off your hands and never pick up ANYTHING again, let alone a guitar. Mastering one instrument, kudos, but two instruments?? That's just taking the piss! Thanks Tony, in 2 minutes flat, both my hands will be laying on the floor in a pool of blood,......that is if I can figure out how to cut the second one off!
He is not unknown he has been playing for a while and every famous player knows he is a respectable and incredible musician, I think that makes him feel accomplished...not money
This is inspirational!!! When you have musicians playing behind you, of this caliber, it makes the head guy's job much easier. I feel sorry for the ppl hating on this video. I'm a keyboardist/pianist and this is simply an amazing display of musical talent. That's EXACTLY where I wanna be. He's a straight-up beast!!!
@StreetFighter2010 I agree with you, Tony is a fantastic composer and concertist 101% talent, his versatility as a guitar player and piano player shows it
Vai is not the kind of person that fires musicians for being good, I think Tony just had some musical projects himself alongside, also the music chemistry and connection he has with Vai when playing is amazing
Then I wonder why Steve Vai, who is an extreme control freak and perfectionist, chose him for his band and has kept him in for almost ten years. Hmmm...
Ha, ha, ha amazing: I was thinking that very same thought just a minute ago, having just listened to both artists' soloing on keyboards a moment ago. A tough call it would be. I prefer Tony overall, but I didlike this particular solo; for Vai disc I wish that he had've played something more rockin'.
A new Tmac solo disc is goig to drop in early June. So far, what's known is that Donati and Marco Minneman are the drummers. Anyway, although I am a hardcore fan of Tony's, I never really liked this particular solo.
whahahahahha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!you made it possible man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!that´s just about fantastic coment...I loved that !!!!!!!if you already play any instrument remember you have another "instrument" you´ve been mastering since you were a 13 years old kid...So, know you now that you mastered two instruments don´t bothers yourself about others musicians man...save your hands for your "Music"!!!!HHHAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why? Why would you tell me that? Do you think you're helping the matter here? As if I didn't already have enough fuel to fire this jealousy with.... Ha, ha!
He's a classically trained pianist and violinist. I want to see him play an electric violin. No doubt he brilliant, which is why he is virtually unknown in the USA, they prefer morons...like "Connie" West.
Jordan is an excellent and crazy talented piano player masquerading as a keyboard player. There are guys like Tony and especially Derek who take it to another world. It’s apples and oranges
I love his ability to play 2 different styles at once and keep track of both without fucking up a single note, pure mastery at its finest

Totally agree 💯💯💯
Tony MacAlpine 👏🏼 / this is one of the best keyboard solos of all times 🎭✨️👏🏼🙋🏻♂️🇦🇷

2:20 is beautiful, an "ocean of notes" as Steve Vai says but also some lovely, ethereal chord changes and lovely classically-inspired lines.
This DVD is great

Vai is nowhere near to Mac Alpine's Standard of musicianship.
2:22 - beautiful chord change there, very moody and beautiful.

like him more than any keyboardist of dream theater......
Funny cuz he plays with derek alot lol
i like how this solo spot plays out like an actual piece of music.
really rare people like tony who can play freakish good on two instruments
That is emotionally beautiful. Such an overlooked player - good thing Vai recognizes and makes room for talented artistry
T Mac Alpine ! Great multi talented musician/song writer.
Such an incredible musician!!!!!!!!!!!
TMac's one of my fav on guitar and keys.
Not only he is a great guitarists, he is also a great keyboard player!
ONE OF THE BEST PLAYERS EVER!
Awesome. I'd love to work with this man in the studio. Just would be magic.

Those 2 measures at 2:20 are unreal, sounds lydian or an exact sequence using two lydian ideas. Genius either way.
He apparnetly plays bass and violen as well.
what a duo macalpine-vai
Tony Macalpine > Steve Vai
Steve is my favorite guitarist of all time but Tony is absolutely insane! His solo on Live From Oz is sublime!
Shawn Lane was an amazing keyboardist as well.
O_o
Amazing, amazing, amazing!
great musician!
I've seen alive such monsters as Derek Sherinian, Jordan Rudess, Andre Andersen, Don Airey, Geoff Downes etc. - but this is my favorite keyboard solo.
Tony's a graduate of the Hartt school of music. Where did you go to study your harmony?
Vai is not the kind of person that fires musicians for being good, I think Tony just had some musical projects himself alongside, also the music chemistry and connection he has with Vai when playing is amazing
YAY!!
T-Mac rules. Incredible.
Tony is so incredible playing the piano and keyboards that if he transposed those notes into a guitar there would be no match for him, not at all
Awesome!!
amazing
I can't get the right pressure to get through the bone, but thanks for your assistance in the matter!
2:12-230 is my fav in the whole thing.
👍❤️
Then I wonder why Steve Vai, who is an extreme control freak and perfectionist, chose him for his band and has kept him in for almost ten years. Hmmm...
Solo foda!!!

JR KILLS
Was that Steve Vai adjusting his pants at 2:51? I didn't need to see that.
A new Tmac solo disc is goig to drop in early June. So far, what's known is that Donati and Marco Minneman are the drummers. Anyway, although I am a hardcore fan of Tony's, I never really liked this particular solo.
As "hot" as the water to cook a hot dog - água de salsicha...
sound like a guitar..cool
@petar870602 how much is macalpine better than vai?
Anyone know what kind of keyboard that is on top?
Looks like a KORG Trinity.
@DimebagFarrell mabye so he can controle his exposure
I didn't even know he could play keyboard.
Is this the same Vai who played with Zappa in a one piece leopard skin spandex suit? He's not always right eh? ;)
whahahahahha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!you made it possible man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!that´s just about fantastic coment...I loved that !!!!!!!if you already play any instrument remember you have another "instrument" you´ve been mastering since you were a 13 years old kid...So, know you now that you mastered two instruments don´t bothers yourself about others musicians man...save your hands for your "Music"!!!!HHHAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ha, ha!
I actually feel sorry for you.
Why? Because I don't like Tony Mcalpine? If it makes you feel better...
Tony Mac is better at keys than guitar.... Similar to Mike keneely
David Sancious is like that as well...
He's a classically trained pianist and violinist. I want to see him play an electric violin. No doubt he brilliant, which is why he is virtually unknown in the USA, they prefer morons...like "Connie" West.
isaac thrash yes , in the mind´s eye of Vinnie Moore ,into the song in control the solo is awesome
+isaac thrash or Shawn Lane (ok or at least i think he was way better on the keys)
Everyone might like to know that Tony's "better" and back at "work"...
lol Vai's outfit looks really gay at 2:52
You know there's only one man in the Universe who beats Tony on keys: Jordan Rudess. :)
Jordan is an excellent and crazy talented piano player masquerading as a keyboard player. There are guys like Tony and especially Derek who take it to another world. It’s apples and oranges
🤣🤣🤣🤣
now tell me, whats so complex about that solo! does the lack of harmonic structure make it "COMPLEX"?
Who cares go find his solo in Live From Oz -!Planet X
this is a terrible solo! at first i thought it was one of this "shred" videos;)
Tasteless, just like his guitar playing. And the keyboard sounds are awful.
You sound bitter! Of course you do though you’ll never be anywhere near as talented or proficient as Tony is
