I played this solo in the guitar store and got a smattering of applause and a nod from the two older guys working there. The young guy working there said "Cool! What was that?" The two older guys almost lost their minds. Friggin' kids today.
He was! He had something that made him both conventional and unconventional at the same time. Normal timing, normal sorts of licks, but with slightly odd note choices, and that wide, wavy vibrato. He always gave me the impression that he figured the guitar out for himself because of his note choices. I think if he were trained "what's right" he would've been a far worse guitarist, because he might have been a clone instead of an original! He was really, really good. You're lucky to have seen him live. I never did.
Slick, Mark! Fun fact: My Dad is good friends with Kevin Cronin. They grew up together near Chicago before Kevin went to ISU in Champaign. My Dad used to pick up backstage passes from Kevin's parents and he'd take my Mom. My sister and I went once when REO played under the arch in st Louis. It was a fun show. Have a great day man😃
I wish I could give this comment 3 thumbs up. Love personal stories like this. How cool would it have been to know a legitimate rock star?!?!?!! These guys were absolutely huge when I was a freshman in high school, and I'm fairly sure this was the song that did it for them. It was also an early MTV video. That must have been super-cool to see them under the arch!
Hey my mom is about 40 and she loves this song. I followed these steps and did I it in front of her and she burst into tears because he was her cousin and said can you teach your brother to play the drums and make the whole song
FANTASTIC LESSON SIR !! I’m a 51 year old hobby guitarist for 30 years!! Gary was the BEST!! How do I get the tab, I want to learn this !! ALSO how about the solo to TAKE IT ON THE RUN ??
Thanks James! The tab is linked in the description of the video. Just look in the description below the video and you'll see it. I'll put Take It On The Run on the to-do list.
@@MarkZabel not my favorite song but your pretty talented Mark I guess it took you years of practice to get that level of skill, How long have you been playing?
I've been playing over 40 years, but took about 25 of them off! It's easier to learn now, BUT. The key, I believe, is to listen at least as much as you play and try not to always use tab. It's not important to play the exact notes in the exact position, but rather find solutions that fit your hands and fingers ... and use your ears to help develop your style. Too many people learn directly off of RUclips without listening to the actual song. Listening to the song 5 or 10 times first will help you to be a much better player.
Thanks Gary! Yeah, should be F-lydian. But Gary R plays it more like its parent C-ionian, hitting a bunch of C notes on the F. Chord tone, but the 5th, which is a bit odd. That's probably part of the character of the solo.
Mark Zabel No, thank you for all your great videos and great lessons, and of course fabulous playing that you make look easy because of your lifetime of playing, but is advance; Another Master Class.
Thanks! Yeah, I just did the solo on this one. If there's demand I could do a follow-up. You're talking about the 2 (or maybe 3) solo note runs he does near the end of the song, right? I like Richrath's playing a lot. I'm more inclined to do his solo to Roll With The Changes or another one if that would work for you.
@@MarkZabel I sure hope that the rock and roll hall of fame gets Gary in there some day. It seems that nobody will ever be able to copy his sounds on the Les Paul.
It's a 1970's Tribute model from 2011 or 2012. You get a $2000 discount if you're okay without the white strip around the body. I was okay with that! Lots of people are down on Gibson these days, but this is a great guitar that I got for a great price.
@@MarkZabel I own a Les Paul Classic 2018, 2018 Epiphone Peter Frampton Les Paul Premium Pro, and about 7 others including Ibenez. The Gibson is awesome.

Gary Richrath was a badass guitarist. I was lucky enough to see him live several times with REO waaaaaay back in the day.

Just wanted to drop you another line Mr. Zabel , I played this short solo over and over this past Sunday afternoon, thank you so much again!!
You're welcome. Definitely a fun one to play.
one of those amazing solos you just play over and over after you learn them. great lesson!
I agree. I love it. So simple and powerful! Thanks for watching and for your kind comment!
That first note makes me think of Heart's Magic Man solo. Thanks for sharing this. It is one of the more memorable solos from that era. Great job.
Yep. After the first note it's a little different though!
TY for this. I have always loved this song and the solo is one of those Iconic solos for me.
Yes, simple and powerful. That's the best sort!
What a great song and your fantastic playing.
Thanks Rob!!
Exactly the way I play it! Nice Mark..
Awesome! We must be playing it right then, eh? !!! :)
You are a star, my friend.
You're making me blush! Thanks so much for the vote of confidence.
Very nice
Thanks

Nailed it. Lydian scale? Song is in the key of C, but the chord progression starts F G Am.

Sure. Here's an old one I did, but I'm going to re-do the whole thing ... the "Whole Lotta" song. ruclips.net/video/B3eN_ep4_tc/видео.html
It would be more helpful and easier if you would call out the notes frets and strings you are playing? Just an observation. Great song thanks
