One of the things I love about your channel is the candor... you willfully discuss your mistakes and mishaps without glossing over them.... sadly that frankness is in short supply amongst other channels...
Sorry about the dnf, we all know you trained hard and we were all looking forward to you finishing the race. All in all, there are some great takeaways from this race that will come in handy down the road, and as usual the content was top notch.
Lesson learned i hope! From an old road racer to you, Always have your own spares kit, no matter how un-cool it may look, put this one down to experience. Great channel and vids.
Really appreciate your candor, as well as all of your acknowledgements/gratitude at the end -- nice community around you. Hope you give it another go next year!
Well done Cam on giving it a red hot go. Thanks for documenting the experience for the rest of us to learn from. Have no doubt you will be able to get through it next year (or when you choose to do it !). Crashes are part of the sport, does make me think again about tool kits, phones too...
Great vlog. Just getting to the finish of warnie is a challenge even for the fittest most experienced club racer. Without a doubt you had the legs and would've flown it if you didnt get hit. Half of the challenge for m2w is staying out of trouble. In 2015 had a go as a lowly C grader. I spent most of the race in the wind as the more dangerous place seemed to be when everyone was trying to get shelter. Like you, my BMC SLR was rear-ended but luckily the skewer took the brunt. Legs for a low level club racer were good, but I got lazy with positioning at 180kms in and got shelled when we hit gnarly crosswinds and a crash happened further up the pelo. Lesson learned, like you say, stay in the front half at all times if you can.
Hi Cam. A good review of your race. For those not in the know - Personally I’ve done the last three Grafton to Inverell’s and last years Melbourne to Warrnambool. M2W is an ‘all in’ start whilst G2I has different starts according to your grade, but both have limited assistance. Both are amazing races to do and complete, and have such a professional feel about them. So for Div 1 at G2I, the NRS teams will have their own cars, and for every other grade, there may be one or two spares vehicles and that's it. The problem being those spare vehicles go with the front of the race. Likewise with any spares in the M2W, they may roam a little, but generally go with what they classify as the main peleton (or even the break) ie the front of the race. All the groups off the back therefore have no support. So obviously, if you aren’t a very capable rider in terms of staying at the front of the race, the moment you are dropped you are then unsupported in terms of spares. Therefore, I would never ride Tub’s, I carry a saddle bag, and have my other half doing the feed zones. And I carry a phone and live track on Strava for my partner to see where I am. I’ve found this lack of support (as it stays with the front of the race) all too often in many race scenarios, not just in huge races like this, just typical country racing we do in NSW, so you just need to be self supportive if your race ends up being that way. A good lesson for everyone. I’m sure you’re disappointed with the outcome and it's lit the fire for another crack. Good on you for having a go.
Man Cam i am sorry you had that terrible luck. I know you been training for months for that race. Lessons learned i suppose. Keep it up we all appreciate all that you do !!!
You will knock it out nezt time, Cam. Brings back memories/nightmares of the 1987 "Lufthansa Tour" (Rheinland-Pfalz) which was not ridden at Radtouren pace. Profi & AB'ers flying all up the road. DNF'd in the Taunus Mountains in the 41F degree stinging rain. Thanks for the recap, Mate.
Last Summer I nearly never started the Paris-Brest-Paris ultra long-distance race across France thanks to snapping my hanger less than 36 hours earlier en-route from England. Clearly hangers are very individual to the bike, mech support didn't have a spare hanger and I was saved at the 11th hour by someone providing me with a universal hanger. I was then able to go on and compete after 18 months of training. So my word of advice - carry a spare hanger in your pocket - they weigh next to nothing - but that small thing could cost you dearly.
Good effort on what was a horrendous day for cycling. On a race of that length it's probably well worth having some CO2 and running with some slime in the tyres at an absolute minimum.
depends on how bad the seat rail was broken, snapped in half? eventually gonna fail more, rather not be going down a descent on it and hit a bump causing it to completely fall apart and crash at speed.
That's the same response you give everybody lol. I've already been through it with this guy ha ha. Very insecure about his own abilities obviously. Why don't you become a pro domestique so you can relax
I don't do such extreme rides, but I do carry a very extensive emergency kit. With this damn virus, I want to make sure that I get home on my own steam.
These things make us stronger and make us learn for next time. Sorry that the bike got a bit of going over. Positive side at least you didn't hit the deck.
mate, hard luck! I would've been in that sag wagon the first time. Good review of the race and take home lessons. So the next question...will you be doing the 2021 edition of the Melb-Warny to sort out unfinished business?
Here's a question for you: What is the law/etiquette around being rear-ended? I imagine in a bike race there is always a risk of this in a pile up and so there would by racing you give up the right to but I commute to work also and have had a few wheel suckers clamped on. I get a little frustrated by this as I have no idea what kind of bike skills they have or if they intend to pay for any damage caused. Highly doubt it! Love the channel, thanks.
There is no rule Colin, it's bad luck. There was quite a big pile up in the end and cyclists everywhere so it's hard to know what even happened! Thanks for supporting the channel too. Cam
Hey mate sorry to hear about your race... I'm after some advice I have a 2020 giant fastroad flat bar advanced 1 however I want to put drop bars on it good quality carbon ones what's your thoughts??
What an adventure! I envy you mate, you had the frame of mind, age, shape, to do this racing. I am 59 and love cycling, do my 100-kilometers every two days, looking to extend that to 175-200k's as soon as I'm a bit more in shape... But I don't think I could do the racing that you do! Your videos are very informative!
To bad with the crashes. I think that all these races should be set on time defined starts. 200 riders at 2 minutes apart would mean that starting in last position you would star 1:40 minutes back. The winner just has the best time, no need to bunch up hundreds of people and have crashes. So basically it can be possible for the last person to win the race even starting last, but on longer races weather could work against you as it could rain 1 hour later.
Great insight to the race Cam. Repair kit all the way mate, but appreciate the weight saving for the race. Don’t think you can kick yourself for the rear end accident, this alone probably killed your race from the sounds of things. Good vid👍
I think this is your trade off: no repair gear or nutrition on you to minimize weight and maximize placing vs. no personal equipment to allow you to finish the race. Only you can make that determination.
So if I dropped Brian up Greenhill road at TDU, does that mean I could have beaten him at the Warnie. Lol...... bad luck Cam. Lots of carnage this year. 😭
Seems an unfinished story. You are up for the challenge next year. Same race, same bike. But dont forget your spares and tool kit. Now I have subscribed. My TeamMachine and I will be waiting. 😁
Thought you were very unlucky Cam and even if you’d repaired the tube maybe the other problems would have played on your mind for the rest of race. But maybe finishing would have trumped all that but great effort 👍
As DNF’s go that one was at least character builder. Plus, if you had road rash the flies would have been much more irritating. So you had that going for you.
Awesome video Cam! Really enjoyed it. Look at it this way - at least you had a wealth of content to vlog about :-). If everything went well, it would've be a boring episode ;-).
Mate it all went pear-shaped for you the night before at the Quest apartment when you blokes couldn't figure out the elevator. I'm blaming everything on that, it was the turning point :-)
Tough luck Cam. Sounds like VB time, ya' can get it swettin, ya' can get it DNFin' ya' can even get it Melb to Warnie sadwagon, matter a fact I got it now....... All your hard earned training needs the best planned outcome, and the best planned outcome is Melbourne, Melbourn to Warrnabool 2021(cue ending music).
One of the things I love about your channel is the candor... you willfully discuss your mistakes and mishaps without glossing over them.... sadly that frankness is in short supply amongst other channels...

Glad you didn't get hurt, saw your dnf on the site last week and was hoping it was a mechanical issues
Cheers Lawrence 👍
What were the motors doing in the middle of the group? On the leeward side
at that!?!
We've all been there, or at least many people I know have been DNF,, DNS, or last or asked off the track. Better than being unable to ride.
True dat Cliff 👍
Hi Cam. A good review of your race. For those not in the know - Personally I’ve done the last three Grafton to Inverell’s and last years Melbourne to Warrnambool. Cam you are a winner Brother, no matter what the result. Glad you were not injured. You'll get'em next year!
When you stated the "flies" I immediately had a profound emotional connection and hence in nano second clicked "thumbs up" great video; thank you.
Cheers mate. Cam
What software do you use for this video? How did you create thing nice layout? Thanks.

Well done just the same Cam! Thank you for sharing this experience! And am sure that next time round you’ll smash it! 🙏🏼🚴🏼♂️💪🏼

really impressive hitting 400w for 10 min in a race. Whats your ftp at right now, 375?
What? 375? That’s pro domestic material right there
@@HeathyRoidz He is quite heavy ;) Probably still below 5W/kg for him
That's the same response you give everybody lol. I've already been through it with this guy ha ha. Very insecure about his own abilities obviously. Why don't you become a pro domestique so you can relax
@Bernie Sanders u gotta look the data up
@Bernie Sanders I only mentioned the watts
I got rear ended once, many years ago, left me with a damaged hub and no chance to finish
Sorry to hear mate, it’s a frustrating experience for sure!
The 5 Warrny's I rode there was no stopping for a piss. Being a handicap you were either chasing or trying to stay away. We just learnt to hold on
I don't do such extreme rides, but I do carry a very extensive emergency kit. With this damn virus, I want to make sure that I get home on my own steam.
What do you think about speedplay? Are they better than shimano pedals?
These things make us stronger and make us learn for next time. Sorry that the bike got a bit of going over. Positive side at least you didn't hit the deck.
Great video Cam, can you tell me which program you use to analyse your power file?
Tough day at the office.
How come there were no echelons formed in the strong crosswinds ?
Better days ahead Cam
Great footage, keep it up
mate, hard luck! I would've been in that sag wagon the first time. Good review of the race and take home lessons. So the next question...will you be doing the 2021 edition of the Melb-Warny to sort out unfinished business?
Cheers Paul, definitely unfinished business. I’ll definitely be back but not sure if it will be next years or the ones that follow.
Here's a question for you: What is the law/etiquette around being rear-ended? I love your honesty and down to earth style 👍
Cheers mate 👍
I recommend you to try tubeless tires, it's just a better performance and more reliable system than standard tubes.
Hey mate sorry to hear about your race...
I'm after some advice I have a 2020 giant fastroad flat bar advanced 1 however I want to put drop bars on it good quality carbon ones what's your thoughts??

Any idea of what saddle you will try out next?
How do you add the metrics ? That is awesome!!!
Mate this year's warni was a nightmare. You Did well
Great job and keep going forward. Big hearts and be humble wins the bigger prize.
Cannot believe the race was in the gutter for that long and NOBODY attempted to start a 2nd or 3rd echelon
What a bummer. Life’s a learning game, learn the lesson and move on to your next challenge, you were going great before the challenges🚴🏽♀️
I remember as a kid growing up in Amberly, the flies being really bad. I was back in the U.S by 15 years old.
Sorry to hear but glad you shared.
While I’m sorry this happened to you thanks for sharing the lessons. Good advice there for all of us.
Cheers Shaun. Cam
Lesson learnt for the next big race!
To bad with the crashes. I think that all these races should be set on time defined starts. 200 riders at 2 minutes apart would mean that starting in last position you would star 1:40 minutes back. Mate I am an average cyclist at best but love this channel to bits.
I hope you get to have a proper go again next year.
I am sorry that happened but nice review video!
I think this is your trade off: no repair gear or nutrition on you to minimize weight and maximize placing vs. no personal equipment to allow you to finish the race. Only you can make that determination.
Very wise words Robert! My thoughts prior which lead to the decision.
I am a pessimist so always carry tubes, pump and multi tool and I now use Stans in my tubes. Still worry tho.
That was mighty bad luck. Would going tubeless or tubular have saved the day ?
So if I dropped Brian up Greenhill road at TDU, does that mean I could have beaten him at the Warnie. Lol...... bad luck Cam. Lots of carnage this year. 😭
Seems an unfinished story. You are up for the challenge next year. Same race, same bike. But dont forget your spares and tool kit. Now I have subscribed. My TeamMachine and I will be waiting. 😁
Wow, such tough luck after that preparation and getting the new bike... maybe you shoulda stuck with the solid TCR ??
been there some times while training lol. Two weeks ago i got a puncture, when i replaced the inner tube i bent the valve ;)
That a goddammit moment
Still a monster effort to even make it that far Cam. Hopefully the weather cooperates a bit more next time you enter
Cheers mate 👍
Even if you didn’t win you got a lot of friends who supported you and thats a win already
Let's all be grateful there were no number 2's at 1.15. Lol !
Cam - gut wrenching on the DNF. Great experience for you and thanks for sharing to those of us that can only dream of trying the M2W. Cheers
Unlucky result, but there's always the next one. Good footage keep it up!
Cheers Steven. Cam
Nightmare! We've all been there.. hope you've another goal to move onto.
Can you do a review on the trek Madone
Still proud of you Cam 👍🇦🇺
Cheers Bondy 👍
Tubeless for the win mate, so many people do all the hard work and suffer a puncture which ruins the day.
thank you for your advices!!!!
Good work Cam - great attitude (in public at least 😄).
Lessons learnt and stories to tell. Will make it sweeter if you go again and finish the job.
Cheers mate. Cam

The TCR will bring you all the way back home!
Awesome video Cam! Really enjoyed it. Look at it this way - at least you had a wealth of content to vlog about :-). If everything went well, it would've be a boring episode ;-).
Haha! Good point Mark.
at least you gave your best
Still well done, sometimes the bad luck takes over but nothing you can do!
Cheers Jonny 👍
Really great!
Have you ever noticed the tendency to spill stuff on brand new dress shirts? The same thing happens to new bikes. I hope yours is OK.
Mate it all went pear-shaped for you the night before at the Quest apartment when you blokes couldn't figure out the elevator. I'm blaming everything on that, it was the turning point :-)
Sorry mate real bad luck..However u now no for the next time to finish the race in 2021..I no u will make it happen cheers mate..🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾
Mate, there's an old saying in racing. "if you don't win, you learn" Next year!
Just bad luck mate, not your day.
However I would carry a repair kit, and run tubeless tyres as insurance...
Less than a favourable outcome, but life's best lessons rarely come from great experiences. 👌
Cheers Elliot and well said. Cam
Rim brakes make easier on race like this, am i wrong??
Nah, I would have preferred disc on this day because of the rain. Cam
Always disappointing to DNF but you did your best ..Well done for staying in the top portion of the race anyways..
Do you write scripts beforehand for your videos? You speak so well it's like a TED talk or something.
You could have done better mate! Till next race !! Thank you for the best tips as always.
Bummer mate. Next year.
unlucky results mate, at least you know for next time right??
💯
You punctured on the most common climb in Colac
5 K bike, no inner tube? sorry mate you had it coming !
I cant fathom my ass being able to had a ride that long. Can people really ride this far with zero ass pain?
haha, I guess so.
If you want to do a proper bike race enter Grafton to Inverell.
7:05 - charge! No guts, no glory! (Better luck next year: book in 2021)
166 miles for your UK friends too
No dude. No point in finishing under your circumstances.
Looked like a sh!t show. Great video 👍🏼
At times 💯, cheers mate
Nothing a quite Beer didn’t fix afterwards 😁 back on the bull for the next one! Good vids, keep them coming!
When it rains it pours.
Love the channel cam UK 🇬🇧 subscriber
Do you ever work on your own bike?
Not really. Don’t enjoy it
Hard luck Cam
Don't be so hard on yourself. Your bike was screwed.
That's really unfortunate. Oh well next time. Maybe you can team up with your wife and sure here a support person or vice versa.
