    The 70 and 80s had a rise in people owning record players and tape decks at home and cars. It's also due to single sales MJ had thriller that was huge for a while. Now people can just buy any single song they like hence the rise in numbers. You could buy singles in the 60 but full albums was much more popular.

      It’s crazy, huh? I live about 2 1/2 hours away in central Arkansas and one day while visiting Memphis with some friends we inadvertently ended up at Graceland on the eve of the anniversary of his death. Omg, The crowds were gathering already. There was a camera crew from a local TV station, and I even managed to get a good picture taken with a random Elvis impersonator, but there were hundreds of people just camped out on the sidewalk for a vigil. A little over the top, I’d say.

    Notice the change from the first half to the second half? We used to like bands, now, we like individuals. BTS appears to be the only artist that might qualify as a band, or boy-band, rather, on the 2019 list. 1969, by contrast, has at least four actual bands. To be fair, there may be more similarity depending on how many artists employ a live band, and how many just roll the backing track.

    • @noahkane26

      I’m wondering if it has more to do with economics than evolving tastes. Case in point:
      If a band has 4 well known members, they should be getting paid relatively equally. And if they later split up, there’s probably a lot of legal wrangling that has to be done in order for any of the individuals to perform their songs.
      Now compare that to a solo singer who has a background band full of relative unknowns. The singer gets the recognition, gets to use their own songs forever. And while the guys in the band may not get the glory, they do have steady jobs.

    • @emmef7970
      @emmef7970 3 года назад

      No instruments, No band. The dictionary in short defines a band as a group of people that come together to play instruments. If individuals come together just to sing/sing & dance it is called a "group". Also, just look at the history of male musical groups (goes for females too), ie: The Temptations, The Four Seasons, The Four Tops, The Drifters, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, The Bee Gees, and many more. None of them were ever referred to as bands. Even if a group employs a band, the band is not part of the "group" and oftentimes have their own name. Or, they can be touring with a different band on each tour. So, the term band/boy-band that has been used since the 80's is technically incorrect. However, people can call these groups whatever they want it just doesn't make it true. Plus, it's an insult to true musicians.

    When Beatlemania hit America in 1964, I was 13, an explosion of other British bands followed. It quickly became known here as the British Invasion. After the Beatles, my favorites were Simon and Garfunkel. Their songs were lovely two-part vocal harmonies. Their lyrics were thoughtful and often profound. Instrumental music was deftly a part, but as a backdrop to the voices and lyrics. I urge you to pull up some of their videos and listen with your eyes closed. Bridge Over Troubled Waters, first heard in 1970, still sends shivers up my spine.

    Celine jumped up for the Titanic Theme song.
    Man I forgot how humungous Garth Brooks was in the 90's. (still is, last I heard he's still filling stadiums for his last tour in 2014. I've no idea if he's had any shows recently before covid took away all the nice things)

  • @socket_error1000
    @socket_error1000 3 года назад +3

    The music sales, pre internet, were based mostly album sales. This is because hit songs were often only released on the album to push the sales numbers up $$$. Today people can buy just the single song off the album and this increases the amount of people that will buy a hit song rather than the entire album. It also means artists don't make as much money as they used to.
    It was also interesting to see how the Beatles and Elvis were still dominating sales for years after the Beatles broke up (1970) and Elvis had died (1977).

    This charts do included numbers from streams. The way billboard does it is every 1500 streams is counted as 1 album sale, which does skew the numbers a bit. Also in recent years, artists have been including a digital copy of the album with concert ticket sales. Generally those artists always hit number 1 for that album because fans who already bought the album (or streamed it several times) get a free digital copy which is counted as an album sale as well (as long as they claim the download code). That’s actually been a point of contention in the music industry as some artist feel they were robbed of a number one album because of digital copy bundles (one artist gave album codes in a promo deal with Monster Energy sales, and those counted as album sales when they were claimed).

    I like music from all eras and I am a casual listener of so many artists, I can't possibly name them all. My roots are classical music because kf my family as well. In January of 2019, I was at a real low point and came across BTS. I was fascinated at how it seemed like they genuinely liked each other and were actually involved in their music, unlike many modern boybands. I'd also been trying to avoid boybands because I figured they were really just there to attract young girls and had nothing to do with music. Digging into BTS, I was pretty much wrong on all fronts. Couldn't have been more wrong, in fact. They work so damn hard and are all involved in writing and producing their own music. The level of quality that comes with what they do is just so above everyone except maybe Beyonce, in the west.
    Needless to say, I took a dive into the "rabbit hole," as we say in the fandom and BTS are definitely my favorite artists, hands down. Their roots are hip hop, but they delve into almost every genre. There's songs for everyone in their discography and I couldn't be prouder to be supporting them.

    A lot of the changes in numbers correlate to album releases. When an artist released a new album the sales will immediately shoot up and then taper off. Over time, the top artist will have previous albums continue to sell as it find new audiences. The enduring artists are the ones that are at the top of the list year over year despite not having a new album out. Groups like the Beatles to stopped producing new records back in the 70s yet remain on the top because of being discovered by younger generations. There’s a lot of factors that go into these numbers, but keep in mind that technology also impacts sales. When media changes, that also impact sales. For example, when albums gave way to cassettes a lot of people replaced albums with cassettes. Same applies to when we went from CDs to streaming. People who already owned the CDs also bought the streaming songs. Many factors go into these numbers.

I think you should check out these two musicians that do music reactions as they were finding out about the older music - Andy & Alex. My era is mid-60s through early 80s. My favorite all time band is The Beatles, 2nd is Jethro Tull. Favorite male singer John Denver, 2nd Garth Brooks. Favorite female singer Linda Ronstadt, 2nd Dolly Parton. I also listen to a lot of folk music including Celtic music.

    Elvis began his career in the 50s and his fans aged with him, whereas the Beatles only stayed together for a comparatively short time. If Paul McCartney's solo career was added to this chart if would look different. I was a 'Beatlemaniac' at 12 or 13 years of age when they first arrived in America. I got as far as The White Album in college, then lost interest. I know a lot of people stayed with them and also followed Paul's career later.

    A lot of the comments below re the Bee Gees reference their disco ear music (Staying Alive). It's good music but their best was before then, when they wrote and sang ballads. 'Words". "I've Got to Get a Message to You', 'Massachusetts'. 'I Started a Joke' are just a few. They also wrote a lot of songs that were megahits for other artists. 3 brothers from Australia, so the Bee Gees came in as a stand in for for the Brothers Gibb.

    This just shows how bad the 2000s were for music.
    60’s-70s-80’s were legendary, the 90s were okay, that’s when hip hop really came of age but rock was declining, and then the 2000s were just a corporate pop disaster. And the 2010s were really a nice revival of real music alongside the rinse-and-repeat formulaic corporate pop. I think the 2020s will turn out to be a good decade for music, I’m optimistic about it.
