No matter what level an artist is at, it is always valuable (no pun intended) to refresh with a value study. Thank you for your wonderful instruction:)

So true, every time I feel I'm struggling with something I go back to value studies for a while. It always results in some progress being made.

Paul, I really like your easy, careful way of explaining value. You explain value in detail and the show us by example. I do appreciate this because it does sink in. It all makes sense to me, thank you so much for sharing your wisdom.

Thank you for making such an in-depth and amazing video! You have a nice, soothing voice and really straightforward way of teaching. I did a painting with oil before, but I never painted anything with oil afterwards, and this gave me the motivation to get into oils

You're very welcome Jerri. You can practice that technique easily too, without actually doing a painting. A very useful skill to develop!

Excellent video Paul. Question - do you use this “study” to simply prepare yourself to understand the subject you would like to paint, or do you paint color over it after this initial layer dries.

I mostly do value studies just to learn more about value. It's the foundation of colour and so important, I think. If you're learning about value your'e learning about colour.
