- There are so many tricky trills on the recorder - E flat to D, and don't even talk to me about G to A! I take you all the way up and down the alto recorder, showing a bunch of handy alternatives for the worst trills. Enjoy!
In this video I have given the trills as alto fingerings, but of course they would work transposed onto soprano as well! 😘

To be honest I always skipped the difficult thrills where ever I could, so I never learned them very well. Good to see this video about it. It all came back to me and I remember why I didn't like it: for every thrill another solution, this finger up, that finger down. How can I remember that?
Anka - I used to this too - lol!! I use the second method Sarah suggested for the G/D to A/E trill - it works well but if you forget to start on the upper note it doesn't sound right!
Just as an idea, I find for G/A-flat 3456, trill with 5, finishing with 346 works really well and is less stuffy sounding. Useful for Bach 1013 Sarabande
andrew cranmer - thanks I will try that!!
I use this trill A-G:
1.Start with your normal A fingering.
2.Move to G, but keep holes 4 and 5 closed.
3.Trill with finger 3.
Maybe it is written somewhere else, but I discovered it by chance.
German Martinez Lopez - I might try that. I have trouble with a repeated trill in the slow movement of the Sammartini - however, I have decided that I like my cheat better than doing it correctly!!
@1:20 that's not only Baroque, that's Rock & Roll, baby! ✌️😎
Thanks Sarah, the recorder is very complicated for trills compared to those other nice woodwinds that have trill keys. It was nice to hear that high C# is unstable, I have haven't been playing for very long but am finding this note to be very hard to play cleanly unless I run up or down to it.
This is great, Sarah! Thanks so much. I struggle with some of the trills and these cheats will really help. It would be useful to have a chart with the fingering for the cheats. Hm, maybe I'll make one from the video...better watch it again.
If you were to do a video crash course on getting your kids of all ages started on the recorder, and maybe even some simple family ensemble stuff, that would be amazing. We’re in need of some music therapy these days.
So useful, thank you! I love all these technique videos you put out more than the rest, Sarah! I’m loving the fact that on my Helder alto the easiest were also the best in tune!
I've been watching for about a week, and thanks to you, I have taken the plunge-- in about an hour I will take the very short walk to my mailbox and retrieve a package, and after bringing it in, washing my hands, sanitizing it, and washing my hands again, commence either annoying or entertaining the neighbors.
At first I thought u meant cheap thrills
Sia lol 😂
Yea
THANK YOU for doing this video! I have been struggling with one part of Sammartini's Concerto in F Major, 1st movement. You helped me remember how to do it! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR PLAYING, BTW!!!
March 2020. Might be doing alot more recorder practice for the next..... weeks.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That A to G was driving me crazy!
So informative! The are a bunch of headaches for recorder players!
love the way you look like you're trying to restrain a flapping goose when you are demonstrating an intentionally awkward one
Awesome! Always so very helpful. Thank you!!!
I have been waiting for this one.. Thank you so much!
so cool!
i love it
Blockis is also very useful for me!
Hi Sarah, I was wondering what notation recorder players use to indicate what fingerings to use? Pianists and string players use numbers, what's the equivalent for recorder? Thanks
I have a whole set of these as well as octave flutters and harmonic trills
I have a very old good book about this by jean claude Veilhan
for b to b flat you can also trill with half 6
you should try the Nuvo toot. It's a weird combination of a flute head and recorder body. It looks fun to play
Brilliant, this! Love it!
Great video on alternate trill fingerings! Too bad the trill fingering for high D-E doesn't sound good enough to use in Vivaldi Concerto RV 443 measure 23 (not actually a trill) and is difficult to play with standard fingering. I'd like to know what fingerings you use for Flight of the Bumblebee.
Clarionetist - I was just practising this and found that, if careful, you can actually just trill by lifting the 4th and 5th fingers on a sopranino (well it is possible on my little Aulos plastic at least)
@@honeychurchgipsy6 I can actually do what you suggest (for D-E trill) on my Mollenhauer Denner alto, but is not reliable on my Aulos Haka alto. I noticed that Maurice Steger does this in his super-fast performance of Vivaldi RV 443 (on soprano).
@@Clarionetist - weird how it seems ok on some instruments and not others. It is fine on the Aulos sopranino - which I highly recommend by the way if you don't want to spend loads on a first sop. It's in 3 parts - beautifully made and sounds great for a plastic. However, this trill is no good on either of my altos - Rottenburgh or the cheapy Aulos - so maybe it is a function of the smaller instruments? I will try it on my Moeck Rottenburgh soprano and see.
Also, I can get a pretty decent high F# on my Rottenburgh alto by taking the G fingering and adding fingers - I need to do it and write it down before committing it to public scrutiny - lol!! I use it for the Mathew Arnold Sonatina - I cannot cover the end as I have some mobility issues and nearly knocked my teeth out once!!
Could you please do some videos teaching some renaissance or folk songs? So many will have recorders at home from school days so could join in the fun
I love your enthusiasm, wish you had mkre views you deserve it! And i dont even play recorder xD
Hello Sarah :) I want to buy a recorder and I would like to play medieval folk music and stuff like that. You said the mollenhauer dream recorders (plastic) are nice. Im also thinking of buying yamaha 314 BIII.. it has a very clear sound, the dream has not but the dream recorder has a special folk sound. Like elves playing in the Forest. I don’t know which I should choose. If it would be the dream recorder should I buy it in plastic first?
Absolutely off topic.... I love your lipstick😅
i have a recorder too!
yeah! that's when you wore your glasses!!! If you do again I will play a piece by jean-daniel braun and upload it on youtube (that would be my very first youtube vid omg!!!)
High d flat to high e flat?
What kind of music should i be listening to, to improve my recorder skills?
I’ll admit it, I laughed out loud at the video title.
xD
All I do is trill!
You skipped over G# - F#?? You said you'd skip the OBVIOUS ones . . .
First comment
your cheating!
I was wondering if she was going to mention coronavirus, but then I realized she's English.
I also filmed this video a few weeks ago, before it all kicked off...!
Why would being English make any difference? I’m English in England and we are frantically trying to set up remote internet teaching as our schools close and the VMTs and supply teachers (I am both) face a total loss of income.
But there again, perhaps you think we still have too much ‘stiff upper lip’ to mention little difficulties like that?
@@AnnFBug - I was wondering why being English would matter too? Also, Sarah lives in Holland so - ???
I have upset all my fellow choir members by trying to correct the nonsense some of them have been spouting on the whatsapp about the virus. Seems it's ok to talk of it being a Chinese weapon, just the flu, or suggesting we should perform together at a big festival (with choirs from Hampshire - the worst affected county outside London) because singing will boost our immunity and protect us, but not allowed to give good information and say 'hey everyone, be careful out there': that upsets them apparently.
I feel for teachers and healthcare workers and the delivery drivers - let's hope we can stay safe and come out of this relatively unscathed (I doubt the second). Hopefully you will not lose all of your pay either: the government is being urged to extend its help to non-standard workers, self employed etc. such as yourself.
