Sorry about the filming quality on this one! We tried something new and couldn't get the camera to focus quite right. But it was such a great performance by the Dover Quartet that we had to share it! You can hear this track on the Quartet's new album "Encores", out NOW! Listen on Spotify here: spoti.fi/2XMWdhe. The album is full of exciting and beautiful movements from some of the most well-loved quartets. And don't forget to subscribe and hit the bell - we'll be releasing more videos from the album over the coming weeks!

I'm old and I grew up with movies where the camera angle didn't change every 2.5 seconds. I love the idea of the quartet more compressed, more focused physically, but please, the music moves so forcefully that two stationary cameras could capture the moment without being a distraction. The sound mixing of these new videos has been fantastic and, setting aside my curmudgeon-ness, I look forward to more Brooklyn/Dover collaborations.

This is the first recording I've heard where the viola in her solo actually digs into it with just as much energy as when the movement first starts. Most other quartets seem to get tired by this point.

All of these performers did a great job transporting you into the room with Shostakovich. I checked that my door was locked after they finished. Many pieces of music are marked by their need for clarity, precision, and expression. This piece requires all of that while throwing yourself out the window emotionally and keeping it under control. I am absolutely astounded that this piece has had such a great performance.

Wow! Shostakovich 8th is, for me, the greatest string quartet. After it lulls me with the cantor of its soft, pastoral opening, this movement is like holding on to a horse that bolts, galloping wildly as I hold on for dear life, yet utterly overwhelmed with joy. And I love how this performance turns it right the way to eleven. Exhilarating!

My interpretation of this piece is beyond imagination. For example, Violin 1 & 2 represent my psychological mindset which demonstrates itself as “crazy, psycho, weird or mental” whereas the viola represents itself as my ideas which tend to often appear and then be taken over by my “psycho” problems and that leaves the cello which in my opinion, is the starting point of all the problems ending, for example, violin 1 is shouting and arguing (psycho) and violin 2, viola, and CELLO are trying to resold the problem whilst the violin 1 is still arguing, soon the viola takes over to try and shove the issue away but is shortly cut off rudely by the Psycho violin (1). At the very end, my ideas finally break through to me and I quickly take note of this and end abruptly before the violins have a chance to regain power to the argument hence the abrupt ending. Anyways if you read this, thank you, and please reply your interpretation of this piece!

This is the cleanest and most poignant version I've ever heard of this piece!! Better than Jansen's! Some of her recordings (you know the one I'm talking about) are just god awful. This is crisp and balanced yet each part never fades to the background - which is the point!!! It's meant to be up in your face, that's why this movement is so short compared to the others in this suite (that and if this were any longer they wouldn't have any bow hairs left by the end haha)
In short, this recording is absolutely phenomenal, you've earned yourself a new fan :)
