11/23 After watching this video this morning I decide for the fun of it, I walked down and cut about a 4-5 foot piece of vine, hang if off and old Crabapple tree which sits in my field by itself 20 yards from my house and sure enough not long after dark I look out my garage door window and there are several doe rubbing and licking on the vine!! LOL Was awesome to stand there and watch. Can't wait to pull the card from my trail cam to watch in the morning. From Hampshire County WV Thanks for sharing your knowledge and info! My favorite channel!!! As always well done!!

Some folks think heavy "natural" manila or sisal rope is good for a hanging "branch." What most don't realize is that this rope is almost always treated with pesticide & or oil. The rope manufacturers also use fillers so you can find fine wire, bits of plastic and other junk in it. We stay away from it - don't even use it to tie a vine up - we just use a bit of paracord.

This was a much needed video for a lot of folks, including myself. I personally have a few that aren't working as they should. I think I now know why after watching this. I always use the vine, waist high, etc, as I learned from you a few years ago but I think my location on a few of em is wrong. The drought and ragweed made my crimped buckwheat plots a total fail this year. Naturally I top seeded with rye and it's now coming up but I won't have any brassicas at all this year, which sucks, but rye is better than dirt. Lol. Thanks Jeff for another great and informative video

    Mr. Sturgis,
You're experienced with making mock scrapes in the UP of Michigan and Northern big-woods settings. Do you find that deer will or will not hit mock scrapes that are made with sandier soil? What about those spongy areas where there just doesn't seem to be any bottom to the forest floor made of moss and roots? Should I be focusing my mock scrapes on soils that have more clay content or are harder dirt?

That could be. I’ve experienced the same thing with my water source. They were there constantly for days and weeks and weeks and then all of a sudden they vanished. It seems like.

Is it too late in the year to put a mock scrape in place?

Kevin, I’m sure an answer from Jeff would be more valuable than mine but I will say that in my opinion it is definitely not to late. I have put out several over many years during fall and winter and have had deer using them almost immediately. Others may have had different experiences but if I were you I would go for it.
