I found this. I believe the statue was scrapped for the metal during WWII. McCreary hired Alfons Pelter, a well-known German sculptor to design the Victory Monument for Hotel Victory. At 22-ft high, the bronze monument featured a winged woman holding a wreath in one hand and a staff in the other. The “Winged Victory” monument was surrounded by a stone balustrade, the ruins of which can still be seen today.
I continue to be fascinated by the history of South Bass, Island and the Hotel Victory.
