- Hi! I’m Ellery Klein. I teach fiddle and violin in Boston after having spent a few years touring round with various groups.
Let’s nerd out on jigs today!!!
Zoom in to your basic jig bowing.
No distracting left hand ornaments, just a solid
ONE 2 3 ONE 23
feel.
Let’s zone out together and try practicing getting this rhythm in our bones & our internal clocks!
Here’s the video for learning Mug of Brown Ale here:

Just about to buy my first violin and looking at lots of youtube, your explanations are extremely helpful thank you 🙏🎶🙏🎵 I cant read music but can read tab and mostly play by ear so looking forward to learning fiddle playing at nearly 70yrs old
I love the metaphor of the kid on the swing! Brings the swing to life in multiple ways :D
What the actual hell ? MAGIC !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been doing Ten Penny Bit - only listened and copied this briefly but it's like transformed how the tune sounds. FOLLOWING
Thanks! I'm glad it helped!
Thank you , Elery! This finally makes sense. All the other teachers say emphasis on the first and fourth beat but as a newbie I don’t know what that means! Watching you play slowly helped me understand bowing: long, short, short is a much easier way to understand “emphasize 1st and 4th.” Thank you!
Yes, I wouldn't say the first and fourth beat. There's two main beats in a jig, divided into three microbeats. But you don't tap your foot ONE TWO THREE FOUR FIVE SIX!
You tap ONE two three TWO two three.
The fancy way to describe this is "compound rhythm," but you can also say "JIGGety- JIGGety"
Hi. I've been playing fiddle for years. Never been very fluent in bowing a gig. Really good to get back to fundamental practice. Should have done this years ago.
Ellery thank you for your calm guidance through through bowing rhythms which take to the heart of a tune.
Really helpful !!!Cheers from France.
Merci!
I just loved your sense of humor! ❤️ (🇧🇷)
Thanks!!! I try to keep the "play" in playing music.
I like you , you’re a good teacher , excellent lesson
Good heavens! You are the dead spit of my Aunt Nora, albeit much younger!!!
Thanks for the video and the instruction!!!!
Your Aunt Nora must have been an incredible woman!
Ellery, this is a great video! Love the bowing breakdowns. More, more! Thank you. 🙏❤️🎵
Thank you! Let me know what you'd like to know...my students are the best source of ideas for what videos they are looking for!
@@elleryklein-fiddler9330 thank you so much for sharing your free and insightful.vidros..can you share any tips on how to learn jigs or piece aster I general and how to learn double stops faster for jigs and for violin in general?? And whybdonyou say you don't want to dot but rather stress..isn't it a matter of opinion or it's not?
@@leif1075 All trad music is a matter of opinion, and I've got mine!!! 😃 Thanks for the suggestions!
@@elleryklein-fiddler9330 Sure I meant no disrespect . And as for my other question do you have any tips for learning jigs faster and more easily? Thanks for answering
@@leif1075 no disrespect taken, that's just my sense of humor. I'll try to make some videos again this spring. In the meantime, jigs like Ten Penny Bit, Lilting Banshee and Connaughtman's Rambles are good simple jigs to start with.
Thank you very helpful , moe
What an excellent lesson! Thanks very much.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
I practice acoustic guitar but always look for learning and hearing tips on other string instruments! Plus I like Celtic music too! Great video Thanks
Great lesson!! It's so helpful 😊
Really good video. I'm just starting so I need as much help as I can get with my bowing. Thank you
60 is a natural walking rhythm... tapping your foot i find that the best
Thank you! Looking forward to the reel bowing technique, that's where I have more problems, especially with fast tempos.
You're welcome! I do have one video on reel bowing - the Down Up Triple Slur, as I call it. ruclips.net/video/XK7Gvep2Alg/видео.html
"My students love me" 😆😆 enough to make me subscribe. Love the attitude ❤️
Haha, thanks. I do want everyone to feel loved!!!
Thank you for an excellent tutorial - very helpful for one picking up the violin again after decades of inactivity! You apologised for slurring some notes, but in fact I think those specific slurs add beautifully to the character of the jig, and also change the up-bow, down-bow sequence following. Practising without slurring initially could make it hard to later 'undo' the 'up/down' sequence that has become fixed in muscle memory. Your thoughts?
Thank you Ellery! Great lesson. 🙏🏼Did you ever make a tutorial for the time you were playing at 9:31? I couldn’t catch the name of it. Many thanks 😊
Good info.
Thank you for this
You are fabulous! Thank you for such a clear tutorial! I am practising your suggestions. May I ask - is it best to nail the patterns so you don't have to think about them, before introducing them to a tune? I ask because I tried the pattern (A,DD,A,D,A) and felt okay so tried introducing first on A or second on D and it went pear-shaped 😆
Thank you so much !!!
you're so welcome!
thank you
Thx for this!!! Needed to spice up Banish Misfortune 🎻
60 beats is a base line heart rate. Maybe thats why 60 resonates with us. I am a musician who went to medschool😉
I’m a musician who thought about, and abandoned, the idea of going to medical school. But I still love reading the New York Times medical mystery columns!
@@elleryklein-fiddler9330 Thanks for sharing..do you have any tips for learning double stops and vibrato faster and more easily..whether for jigs or not..Inam getting frustrated and discouraged trying to learn..and what piece are you playing here?
@@leif1075 Hi, don't worry so much about vibrato for fiddle, but if you want to learn, I stole the techniques of Doree Huneven for teaching my own students vibrato!!
Thanks-:)
