    Hi Dan. Thanks for the review. I have a 9T in similar spec. On your negatives I also found the suspension very hard initially but adjusting the damping front and rear to the softest setting made everything noticeably softer so you can soften it off a fair bit. A lot of reviewers mention the lack of fuel gauge. It’s a bit annoying but maybe It was left off to go with the retro vibe. I use the trip meter as a fuel gauge by zeroing it after each fill which seems to work ok. You also get a low fuel warning light. PS I don’t think you got to your third negative !

    You are the 4th blogger in a row attributing the torque reaction to piston movements. Pistons are actually very light as they are a reciprocating mass. The reaction comes from the crankshaft, which is the opposite ie heavy and rotating. When blipping the throttle, crankshaft inertia makes the bike kick in the opposite direction of rotation.
    As a result of your review, I’m seriously considering one of these 😁

    Top 3 retro bike absolutely stunning for lovers of air/oil cooled boxer engine. Personally I love that engine and really dislike the soulless water cooled appliance.
    This is the bike to own from range because it is fitted with top quality suspension, unlike other models in the range which have front forks that sinnis wouldn't fit.

Then i can put the panniers on and go around Europe or even the world if i want to , so that makes it perfect . Well not quite it doesn`t look as nice as the R9T . Hi Dan, I love these. I road tested one earlier this year and was so tempted to go for it. They look stunning and the one I was going to buy had loads of Option 719 bits on. The attention to detail is superb. The only thing I didn’t like was that torque reaction when revving it, and also a weird ‘shimmy’ on down shifts. Did you notice that? I agree that the lack of a fuel gauge is a bit annoying but it wouldn’t stop me buying one. Unfortunately I don’t have a BMW dealer within an hour’s drive from where I live and that doesn’t fit with my busy working life, but I think I could go for one at some point. I bought a new one of these in 2018 , top of range standard model as it’s called , bought it in April & traded it in October, shortest lived new bike I’ve ever owned due to knocking sounds in the front suspension going over small bumps , Bmw replaced the front end at 3500 kms & it was perfect again until I got to 7,200 kms & it happened again so I had enough of it & got rid , I was raging at the time because I actually liked the bike, I had to video the problem on my phone to show Bmw & they agreed the first time , second time they weren’t so happy & just gave me a good trade in price on it for a new s1000r sport instead & they held it for a few months before Registering it the following January which was descent enough of them I thought at the time

Like as you mentioned not all information like fuel or gear are visibility for the rider in pure or scrambler version. Also on scrambler I didn’t find it having a relax and nice handling, maybe because I tried Triumph and it was much easier to ride and easy handling. Yes the engine is fun but very vibrating in high revs. For these reasons I decided to go with Triumph.

    Almost bought one these this summer, great bike with really nice design. The problem with them are as you said the suspension and the seat. Even in the softest setting the suspension is to hard and rattely and the seat was killing me after 90 minutes of riding. You really start to feel the frame of the seat on the inside of your thighs. I tried the Scrambler version also. It has i bit better suspension, due to longer travel, but the same crappy seat. If I was to get one of these I would go for the Scrambler or the Urban GS, due to the better suspension and hope that Wonderlich makes a good replacement seat.

    The bikes are stunning to look at. Seeing them parked is quite amazing. The finish on them is the best I've seen from any brand. But........do you think they might be a little overpriced for what they offer? I suppose if you want an air cooled bike, then you don't have that many, premium, options (apart from US cruiser behemoths). I think I'd choose to pick a second hand one up - if I felt the need. They're too costly for what they offer new. Triumph Speed Twin?

    • @Englishbikerdan
      @Englishbikerdan  Год назад +1

      I think price is subjective, and to be honest the boxer engine offers something similar bikes in the category don't have. Just my opinion mind.

      Hi Clive, in my case, I felt a bit like you and only allowed myself to buy a second hand Urban GS 1.5 yrs ago, a 2018 model E4 with 11k km. I have since put another 11k on it, and I could not be happier. The bike feels and looks as new if I keep it clean, and the engine is good for at least 100k if maintained regularly (so far all done myself). Indeed a bit too expensive new, but in case properly used, has great value and I would expect that it keeps that for many years to come. (Personal view: people who complain about fuel gauge or missing quick shifter may look at the wrong segment, but just my 2c)

    So is a shaft drive supposed to last much longer? I guess it’s protected from road grime too… I guess it never needs to be changed.

    • @Englishbikerdan
      @Englishbikerdan  Год назад

      It's certainly better for short term maintenance, as it's a sealed unit and doesn't need adjustment like a chain would. Long term I'm unsure as I'm sure shaft drives would need maintenance of some kind as the miles rack up. Then there's also the question of efficiency and transmission losses, but I'd have to look into that more.

    • @robertstimmel1100
      @robertstimmel1100 Год назад

      Shaft drive bikes would have about 25 percent more power if they had a chain instead, but no chain maintenance makes it worth the trade off for a lot of people. Instead of cleaning and lubing a chain every 500 miles, you only have to replace the final drive oil once every other year.

      Retro doesn't have to mean old, it also refers to modern design philosophy. It's made to look like an older bike, so that's retro in my book. That and it's in the BMW Heritage lineup.

    You only said 2 things you don’t like 😂 and the fuel gauge i don’t see the need? Reset trip to zero after filling up and you get the reserve light wich gives you 50kms range. Some harleys, hondas, ducatis… don’t have a fuel gauge

    I think like a German engineer.
    I don't get the problem of no fuel gauge - Trip odometer and reserve is enough.
    Lack of gear indicator is a nonsensical complaint - Once you've learned the shift points it's useless.
    Engine temp and oil pressure - that's all you need.
    Your eyes belong on the road, not your gauges. Ride the RPM that feels right and the speed that feels safe. Everything else is a distraction.

    • @Englishbikerdan
      @Englishbikerdan  Год назад +3

      Of course you don't need any of it, I learnt on bikes that had nothing and have owned bikes without electric starters. However, we've moved on and so have bikes. At this price you do start to expect these things from modern motorcycles.
