Polo, the National are my favorite band and have been since 2004 when I caught them at the dumpy little House of blues in San Diego. It is not the most accessible music in the world, but the "Sad Dads" as they are known have a unique sound mixed with incredibly thoughtful if sometimes abstract lyrics. Some of their songs have been used in commercials and movies as well. This song is a great example of their slow mopey music. I need my girl is another prime example of this. But they have many bangers. Terrible love Fake empire Bloodbuzz Ohio Lit up Graceless England Apartment story Etc etc And they are absolutely incredible live. In fact many of their songs translate better live than on the sometimes muddy production of their studio versions IMO
The National are the most underrated band on earth, they sing the truth, their albums are powerful, their new album is incredible, brings out emotions from everywhere.
Discovered this song/band watching movie Warrior (2011 UFC style movie). Having brothers made this movie emotional….this song kicked in at right time…..
One of my favorite bands. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone do a The National Reaction. Very cool. Just saw them live again the other day. They never disappoint.
A few years ago I was fortunate enough be watching these guys from behind the stage at the ACL festival. I had never heard of them, but they were amazing and now, whenever I hear them on the radio, I just have to let it go with no option of changing the station. They're pretty darn good.
Love that you’re going down the road of discovering songs like this. So many out there that have that “magic on stage”. What keeps coming to mind that I think you’d like is Song For Zula from the band Phosphorescent. Just the regular studio version.
Recently went for a binge of The National's albums, and their run from Sad Songs to Sleep Well Beast is pretty great, especially the peak in the middle with Boxer, High Violet and Trouble Will Find Me.
Great suggestion! The National is amazing live and this is one of my favorite outdoor venues (Edgefield outside of Portland, OR). "Mr. November", "I Should Live in Salt", and "The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness" are a few of my favorite songs but they have a pretty great discography. I hope you continue to explore more indie artists.
In 2011 my wife and I were at the end of a 20 yr marriage. We had grown apart and lost touch with one another. We became silent strangers. Every word of these lyrics screamed at me during the final days. Lying on our sides with our backs to one another with so much to say yet so bottled up it was painful. This song has always represented our last months together when I hear it.
wow i didn't see the 13:10 mns passed, one of the greatest music ever made! I would like to thanks the movie Warrior that allowed me to discover this masterpiece
The National’s new two albums are very good. Go give them a listen. First two pages of Frankenstein is the first and Laugh Track second came out two months later. They just wrapped up a World Tour 2023.
The drummer is amazing. He's not like Danny Carey or anything, but he is like a metronome and has really interesting beats. The Boxer album is one of the best albums of the 2000's.
I love your reaction! The first time I heard of this band was when this song played in the movie Warrior. You should check it out. When this song came on during the movie I burst out into tears. It was amazing!
I just discovered this band during Covid and I'm absolutely obsessed. Took me a while to get into them because at first I didn't find their music very welcoming or accessable. So I kinda had to figure out what I did and didn't like till I found my groove with them. And you're correct, the studio version of this song is much better imo. It doesn't have that chaotic outro at the end that to me doesn't really fit with the rest of the song. A few recommendations would be Fake Empire, Apartment Story or All The Wine. And imo one of their absolute masterpieces is I'll Still Destroy You. Hope to see more of them on your channel. Cheers
I heard this song in the 2013 movie The East, starring (the gorgeous) Alexander Skarsgård, Brit Marling, and Ellen Page. Which I highly, highly recommend watching too, btw. Since then, I have heard them in other movies such as The Boxer and Warrior, and now I will forever love The National.
Hey Polo, As usual you go along uncharted waters on your Journey of discovery like Columbus discovering the Americas, keep up your discoveries and feed your soul. Love and peace 🏴🏴🏴
If you like folk music, check out the work The National did with Taylor Swift. (Yes, really.) Aaron Dessner (guitarist, keyboardest, etc for The National) worked on Swift's albums folklore and evermore, and brought in the singer for The National, Matt Berninger, for the song Coney Island (off of evermore). About a month ago, Swift returned the favor and sung on The National's new song The Alcott. For folk music and audience participation in general, check out Damien Rice's live performance of Volcano - the best version online right now is "Damien Rice - Volcano live op Best Kept Secret 2013." I got to participate in the round in his Philadephia show in 2014, and it was one of those experiences you remember forever.
@@T.Florenz We were lucky enough to get tickets this year during his ticketing fiasco, and damn, he’s still sooooo good. Really, really need him to release another album!
I recently discovered The National. I can't really get into any of their older stuff, but the latest album "First Two Pages of Frankenstein" is amazing. Apparently it is a departure for them which explains why I can't relate to their earlier stuff. Of the great tunes on the new album, I think you would like "New Order T-shirt". Typically I connect to music more than lyrics but the lyrics of this song (and every other song on this album) are beautifully crafted.
If you like these guys, you might like Arcade Fire. I suggest starting with their first album with the song Rebellion or Wake Up. When that album came out, they got publically complimented by David Bowie, Bono, etc. They were kinda different compared to rock and pop that was happening around 2005; a bit of a breath of fresh air, I guess.
Next reaction VOB "ENTER SANDMAN "Metalica cover VOB BAND TRIO HIJABERS from 🇮🇩 VOB consert LIVE AT FRANCE. TRANS MUSICALES DE RENNES 2021👍 VOB AMAZING super talented 🤟
These guys are so good. Only issue is their lyrics or even the titles of their songs are very vague. Lead singer is fantastic , band sound great and they have solid albums
I'm sorry but I don't see how the person doing the vocals is singing. I prefer a group like Carbon Leaf. Echo Echo. Now that's what I classify as music. This guy sounds like a bad Bruce Springsteen. I get it though, when all my friends had Transformers, I had Gobots.
I have a love hate relation with this band! I love their studio work and have been a fan since boxer. Listened to Boxer, High Violet and Trouble Will Find Me without paying any attention to who the band and singer were. Than I saw them live at the Sleep Well Beast tour and was very disappointed by his performance!! A clumsy Joe Cocker imitator with a bad temper from time to time… went home halfway!! Still love their studio songs but will never want to see or hear this band/singer perform.. so for me this live version sucks 😅

How can I ask you?
Thanks so much for taking my request, Polo!! This made my day!
My favorite band of all time, seen them live like 10 times and every time they play this i get goosebumps. Thank you for checking it out.

Absolutely love The National. So happy that you checked them out. Bloodbuzz Ohio, Vanderlay Crybaby, Graceless, and Fake Empire.
One of my fav. songs of theirs is Terrible Love; however, my fav. album has got to be Trouble Will Find Me.
@@gNome_5 that is a really good album
@@gNome_5I was a casual fan until that album. Masterpiece
Weird Goodbyes, Don't Swallow the Cap, Live in Salt and My Girl

The National is one of my favorite bands. Their sound just really touches me.
I got to see them live once, and it really was such a spiritual atmosphere. They always bring me to tears.

The entire album Boxer is a masterpiece

I have seen the National live about 10 times over the last 15 16 years. Always fantastic!! When Matt goes out into the crowd the place goes nuts

OK...Ill watch "Warrior" again
First heard this while watching the closing scene of the movie Warrior with Thomas Hardy and Nike Norte. Great film. Beautiful song.
The National’s new two albums are very good. Go give them a listen.

Best version of this song is the one specific to the movie WARRIOR. I ask that you react to the version of that

The National have a documentary film called Mistaken For Stangers. Its hard to find but I highly recommend it.

1 OF MY FAVORITE SAD SONGS
Great band. Bloodbuz Ohio is a great track. They often have a bit of a Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds vibe to me

Not sure if it's the same violinist (but likely)
