I never told anyone that I wanted to be a background vocalist because I thought people would think I was aiming low or something weird. Thank you R&B Podcast and thank you @steviemackey, I don’t feel weird for having had that as my dream job/career. I knew we were friends in my head for a reason.😊
Went to school with Stevie in high school and he once told me that he thought that I had the talent to be a backup singer. I took that as a shot to my singing ability 26 years ago. Little did I know that he was actually paying me a HUGE compliment. Crazy the things you learn 2 1/2 decades later.
Reminder that people are often advising us of what THEY believe to be the highest dreams that they can achieve for THEMSELVES. And like Stevie said, he deemed background and the best dream job, so often what others put on you isn’t with bad intentions, but just limited to what THEY BELIEVE can happen. ❤
The wonders he did for Jlo voice is what made me understand the ability of this man, his gift and his talent. He sings amazing......thats an understatement.
The fact that Tank decided to study vocal greatness instead of getting into a shell when his aunty told him he was off is why he is the AUTHORITY, Him and Jay, The AUTHORITY in all things RNB!
WHOAH!! DARYL COLEY is a staple and a musical standard. He's the reason that I wanted to take vocal lessons and music theory. #2ndChronicles #WhenSundayComes.
He forgot Lisa Fischer...she is the one and core background singer who was so courageous the give us one of the best love song of all time "How can I Ease the Pain". The falsetto and runs in that one song is forever everlasting
Erykah Badu is a MUST for y'all show. Babyface, Kelly Rowland, Boy2Men, Monica, Ron Isley, Charlie FUCKING Wilson, Angie Stone, Stevie Wonder,Jennifer Hudson just to name a few
LISTEN: That was some of the greatest advice given. You can’t be humble without knowing how to LISTEN first. Love it! Great interview! Amazing insight! ♥️🔥
I don’t know him that well, but I think he may not want what comes with that much success. Because being around people who are at that level, he knows what it comes with and he knows it’s price.
OMGosh I went to RUclips a couple of months ago and reunited with Mr Glen Jones vocals. Haven’t stopped listening yet 😊 Watched a live concert of Peabo. So AMAZING!!
I agree with Mr Stevie Mackey, we LOOOVE knowing about the behind the scene, TRULY! It inspires everyone whether you want to make music or not, if you don't learn nothing from these stories, you learn about the grind and the PERSEVERANCE needed to accomplish anything. THANK YOU again, Tank and J Valentine!
To me personally, this is the best podcast right now. The conversations are so natural and everyone is just so in sync, there's never an awkward moment. It's beautiful, shout out to everyone involved in this I hope you guys keep growing.
He could definitely be Mickey Mouse. I love how Stevie and Jamie Foxx can imitate anyone and anything. That's a very special gift and lost talent not many have.
Side note: we definitely Ryan Leslie! He was a huge influence back on the 2000s and so curious as to his music moves currently. But yall are killing it regardless 💗 tuned in every episode 🙌🥰
Yall don’t miss!!! This interview was fire!! I honestly look forward to this podcast weekly. During certain periods of your life, there is sometimes an album that gets you through that time. This podcast is my soundtrack for nursing school. Thank you for this podcast!! 🔥❤️🩺
This podcast is the perfect combination of music, comedy, and history. All the weird facts and J saying wtf he want? Yeah, keep that! 😂🫶🏽. J comedy timing is what keeps me HOLLERING. I love it here. Never stop. WE NEED JAZ ON🎤
The best show on RUclips. We were raised on The Winans, Commissioned, James Cleveland and all the mass choirs!! This show is top notch. Keep it up fellas💓💓💓
This podcast is pure Magic! Knew this episode would be amazing from the Mickey Mouse “shorts,” but as always, we get way more than we bargained for. He dropped so many gems and when you’re influenced by the gospel greats, nothing but incredible talent can come from that. Darryl Coley, John P Kee, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Commissioned, Anita, I mean, my God!! That “Amen,” theme song still SLAPS! Stevie is so humble, yet so talented, and I can’t wait for him to put himself out there on an even bigger level. The fact that his start was singing behind Lalah, come on 👏🏾. I love to hear Stevie and Avery Wilson sing together. I love to see Stevie at the piano, playing behind so many wonderful artists and promoting and loving on so many wonderful artists. We need more like him. His “top fives,” were great, and shout out to him making all efforts to save his reputation from a rapper doing the most 😩😂. Can’t say it enough, this podcast makes me feel good. Y’all are infectious and everything is always seamless. Nothing is ever forced. I don’t know how it’s not at a million subs already. Thank y’all for this, and I’ll continue to say it over and over again. Y’all make Saturday mornings better. I truly look forward to it every week. Thanks again for another fantastic episode 🥰 I know I’ve said a mouthful, but I’m so thankful for this and this podcast has helped me to get out of whatever low points that have been endured because of the things going on in the world. Looking forward to the next episode, as always 🥰

When you love all things R&B, you love learning the history. I'm a 70's baby but having older parents (mother is 80 and father would have been 83), siblingd, aunts and uncles and even 1st cousins, I know music from the decades before me.
I am thrilled that you interviewed Stevie. I am a huge fan of his Taco Tuesdays and always wondered about his backstory. His skill is an anointment and his perspective on music is fascinating. As a fan, it's wonderful to learn the science behind the art. This is what podcasts are made for. To be a fly-on-the-wall during experts' conversations. Keep it up! #rnbmoney
I for one am waiting for this Christmas/Negro Spiritual/Lullaby album so I can sit down with my mulled wine, bible and pj’s and catch the spirit!!! Another great interview, thanks RNB Money!
Another great conversation!! Mickey Mouse impression was GREAT!!! Love love love!!!! I grew up Seventh Day Adventist, and Oakwood was and still the best!!!!!! Loved going there growing up.
Omg when StevieMackey on R& B and Tank start talking about Maxwell oh my god that’s my guy I love me some Maxwell his vocal singing he is definitely a legend and is all right I got given gift to the ladies ❤ thank you thank you for mentioning Maxwell singing to Stevie on his birthday🎉 and to see the tears come from both of you brother‘s eyes I know that it was real because when I hear Maxwell I cried to😢 whenever and whenever that’s my song to all of his music is amazing comes from the heart he is definitely gifted it 🙏🏾🫶🏾💐💯🎤😘
This by far is one of the coldest episodes yet!! My boy Stevie Mackey! Basically my entire family went to Oakwood. He and my brother N'Namdi Bryant were there together and worked out together, lil bro is cold too; check 'em out! But this was a very necessary interview to have! It was hilarious, you got the exclusive on lock and you gave the flowers to one of the rawest, coldest, and gifted G's in the game! Aye keep holding it down fellas! I love the podcast! Much love & respect, Wayde
I remember being soooo memorized seeing Stevie sing at my church for youth day's and special music.. hes definitely royaly in the seventh day Adventist world.. every time I seen him.. I was just in awe..
I'm glad J Valentine mentioned that he didn't name women among the top artist lists, a lot of guests have done that w/o it being pointed out. Also happy for Al Green mention bc I need to hear more appreciation of him!
R&B Money you've done it again!! Stevie Mackey is a gem and treasure that deserve the flowers that you have bestowed on him through this awesome interview!! I love the music advice, wisdom and history lessons of the industry that Stevie explained soooo well. He named some great vocalists as well such as Darryl Coley, Karen Clark Sheard,James Brown, Commissioned,Avery Wilson etc. ❤️💰❤️💰
I think 2023…. We need a RnB Money podcast tour. I would love to be present for some of these. I definitely wanted Stevie to give another story. So excited for his album 👏🏽
GREAT episode! Lots of rnb gems! That story about Detroit’s past singers singing with their heart and soul coming from a real place because of the blacks from the south going north makes a lot is sense!
Luke James is epic his vocal ability his range his sex appeal his humbleness it all permeates in his vocal ability it just who's the thing of it is is when he first came out it's a solo artist and not a background singer I think the music wasn't written well for him the story wasn't written well for him now I've heard some more contemporary more recent stuff that the music is extremely well written for him however I don't know what's going on we're not hearing him maybe because he's given that Gemini energy you know the shy humble thing when at the end of the day he's a beast and the vocal Realm he was on some award show I can't remember which one it was and he killed it and I'm like wow I didn't really give him his just do
I remember hearing Stevie sing week in and week out at church and Oakwood U in Huntsville, Alabama, back in the day. He has a great family and it's great to see how far his talent has taken him.
As an r&b producer I can tell you this one for sure,, Strong backgrounds & harmonies is a must have!!! That can make the difference of your song sounding like a demo or a finish radio radio hit ,, example Tevin Campbell's Can We Talk such a simple song but it's the harmonies on the hook that brings it to the next level. I would go as far as to say groups like Guy, Jodeci and Boyz to Men made it mandatory moving forward in r&b music and pop music in general
Every time I watch an episode I think this is the best one yet, and you all continue to top yourself over and over again. Best podcast I've ever seen!!!!
Oh my goodness. I seen the JLo birthday party lives and remembered seeing and hearing him. His voice is soooo beautiful. Thanks for sharing he was interesting. I'm here for the Mickey Soul. LOL
This podcast is sooooo special!!!!!!!! I'm awestruck by how MANY gifted vocalists and musicians we have been privy to! My moment was my mom hearing me sing Tina Marie at age 6. Same here!
Do that shit!
Me too...I've always wanted to be a background/session singer!
Agreed! Always wanted to be a bgv and people look at me like I’m crazy lol
Background vocalist are great . There's alot that sing better than who they're doing background singing for.
Went to school with Stevie in high school and he once told me that he thought that I had the talent to be a backup singer. I took that as a shot to my singing ability 26 years ago. Little did I know that he was actually paying me a HUGE compliment. Crazy the things you learn 2 1/2 decades later.
That's a dope story❤
