That tier list actually served as a wake up call for me cause I am a very crusty ror2 boomer who didn't even know that monster tooth was fixed and has been avoiding them for years. Applies to some other items in the list too, smh my head my head
So many of these early items designs make a lot of sense from a risk of rain 1 perspective. Frost relic being a red especially made sense because it was a green in ror1 and it *shredded* enemies. Monster tooth used to be not terrible, because the heals came to you instead of having you pick them up.
It still shreds enemies. The key difference is you're no longer forced to have to be point blank with enemies all the time (and you shouldn't be usually), so it's not even remotely as effective as it was in 1 just due to the shift from 2D to 3D.
@@broom673 Another key difference is that the Frost Relic doesn't stack hits like in RoR1, it stacks range. So the damage potential inherently has a limit.
Frost relic is a cool item, I had a weird build with like genesis loop, stealth kit, topaz brooch, and frost relics. So when I got hit low, I'd explode, go invis, kill 20 enemies, get 1000 hp shield, and get a huuuge aoe around me. And if you get a bunch of wisps or crowbars with this build it's pretty crazy. This was on huntress when I was a beginner and I kept thinking "wtf how am I killing the whole map every time I almost die?" I don't think I knew what genesis loop did until after the run, and I'm pretty sure it was an artifact of command run where I wanted to test frost relics, either that or I didn't care and thought no matter what red item I took I didn't have enough damage to use my abilities, I was just a mobile self destructing bomb.

I think one of the things to note is that back then, people thought the items still worked like Risk of Rain 1/were treating it like RoR1. Everyone looped once and then farmed the first stage on loop 2 because in RoR1 thats how you farmed items. You got to loop stage 1 and farmed bosses that spawned on the stage before you even touched the teleporter and eventually you'd hit a clover which would let the elites also drop items. Then you'd sit and get FAT. At least, everyone I knew and was talking to on discord at the time just kind of defaulted to this, even without clover.
Woolie got so stacked on nostalgia he thought he was playing double rebar MUL-T in initial release even though that was impossible since loadout menu didn't exist before skills 2.0
To be fair, Health/Healing *WAS* better when the game launched. Without Eclipse being around, and most runs going until crashing, Health was good in the early game until about the 2nd/3rd loop.
The old headstompers stigma of being a bad items still lingers in the back of my head nowadays, I just can't bring myself to think of them as good.
