I've tried it and it doesn't add any range for me, while the normal static stretching does. I think this only might be relevant for people who are already quite flexible such that the nerves become a limiting factor

This goes both ways. It will not help you with your range if your muscles are not flexible enough so you will also most likely not know a difference. As for me, I did sports all my life and due to working on the computer a lot, sitting all day, plus some sports injuries, my sciatic nerves are really sensitive atm. So in the beginning of a stretch session I am insanely tight and reach a certain pain threshold rather quickly, but the more I relax and mobilize certain spots my range increases immensely (to the point where only the muscels are the limit). Pushing through that threshold usually let me do a decent stretching without any further pain at first, but eventually worsening the pain once I cooled down. This might just not be it for you, but it definitely is a topic for me 👍 I subscribed just now :)

It's quite funny I didn't really improve ROM, but this sorted out a problem I've been having recently, where my leg started to tingle during certain kicks whilst doing my martial arts training. I'd love to see a video about fascia. I used to think my pain and lack of mobility was due to stubborn muscles that wouldn't gain flexibility but then discovered fascia. Once I started working on my areas of tight fascia my range of motion improved vastly.
I have awful flexibility and just decided to do something about it. I checked out your “3 Stretches” video, which referred me here first. I just did your test and “failed” everything. Never even heard of nerves creating flexibility issues. Pumped to try this and the 3 Stretches!!!
I've been doing research on this topic, psoas muscle strengthening and ql strengthening for years, and this video really makes a difference in the first try itself!! Great job with explaining and kudos!! Wish you all the best for your RUclips journey!!
I actually saw improvement!!!! Like literal improvement and not just a little!! I never thought I would see THAT kind of improvement and so quickly! Thank you for showing up on my feed and thank you for giving such great information! Instant sub from me.
This is just the most brilliant thing I've ever heard. I did recreational rhythmic gymnastics for 8 years and never got my splits or anything. Any stretches that were supposed to help the hamstring made my calves burn intensely, and my coach said it was normal. She probably thought my hamstrings were tight, but now I understand why this was always impossible for me. I had an eureka moment watching this, I truly never thought I'd find out what my problem was. Now that I've restarted working out and stretching after leaving gymnastics almost 6 months ago, I've encountered the same problem. I will add this to my stretching routine to see if it works for me. I'm so excited!
I can't believe this. I'm almost in tears right now. I've had pain in my sciatica for almost 6 years now. I couldn't bend over and even get halfway down my shin with excruciating pain in my heel. I tried the nerve glide technique explained in your video and I can already reach my ankle with absolutely no pain at all. I can't thank you enough.
Great channel and great vidéo ! Is there any similar effect for hip opening? I have big tensions / sensitivity on hips opening and struggle to improve (on both adductors and psoas), so I was wondering if there is a nerve going through there and any specific neurodynamic exercises that could help as well? Thanks a lot again for your work, it's not common to see such quality material on RUclips (and people citing scientific studies when affirming something:) )
Thanks Liv, glad that I found you. You are my teacher for flexibility from today onwards. I was worried about my poor hamstring flexibility. This one made it a little more flexible
I've always had a complex about my flexibility... so many stretches rely on the ability to touch one's toes. And yet, I love the feeling of a good stretch in every other muscle. It's only the straight-leg-stretches that set alarm bells of in my brain. I've always just found them painfully uncomfortable. I've tried so many times to search for an answer and not once have I learnt about the sciatic nerve. It makes so much sense. I injured my coccyx as a child and have always wondered if it's related. It's a relief to discover this secret and I'm hopeful it will make a difference. Thanks so much for the insight and gentle guidance 🌱💙
Thank you SO much for this! I started doing this exercise, and suddenly, the feeling when stretching my hamstrings went from "no way" to "alright, let's stretch". 😱
This stretch really helped me. The back of my legs are always sore. I've stretched them like crazy and nothing has helped. This nerve glide took the ache right out. I was pretty amazed.
didn't work as much as your difference was, but I still got increased by maybe about 10 degrees, could be from the 3 sets/length of time further stretching the leg and not necessarily the nerve stretch but either way guess it gives some more
Wow. I am seriously tight down my rear chain. Started yoga in the mornings to try and loosen things up. Cow/cat poses helps me a lot but I’ve just followed this and can straight away place my palms flat on the floor. I could do this before but only after a serious amount of uncomfortable stretching. Thankyou
how disappointing is watching videos supposed to solve stiffness issues and end up being advice just for "already flexible people" on how to become "more super-flexible"....totally impossible to do for really stiff people who, like me, can´t rise the leg more than 30º....it is time that these gurus make videos using super stiff persons....otherwise are useless for us.... It's insulting when you put yourself in the "starting position", which for a rigid person is impossible and would be a dream goal.
I just tried this and it completely worked. I always thought I had tight hamstrings! Will continue to do this, felt so good to be able to finally do the stretch without that nerve tension sensation.
I had spine surgery and spent 3 months bed bound in hospital. I can now walk unaided (thank f) and been stretching a lot but I’m going to try this as soon as I get home from work! My body feels tight and crappy so I hope this is that special nugget of information that makes all the difference 😊
wow, always had some sciatic tightness and I was a little skeptical. Went from about 45deg (been sitting too much lately) to nearly 90 is about 40 seconds! Nice. About being gentle yes definitely. Was doing some physical therapy for a sciatica flare up and before I was properly diagnosed I was guided through some stretches that were too aggressive and really irritated the nerve. Probably the most painful thing I've ever been through. So be gentle!
I'm otherwise very flexible but it's embarrassing how little I can actually bend forward. Also the pain I get while stretching is very different than elsewhere in the body. I've suspected a long time that it could be something else than thight hamstrings like everyone keeps suggesting. Well of corse it could be that too but there's gotta be something else holding me back as well. I'm gonna try if doing this will help me
Stumbled upon your video and It took only 3 minutes 11 seconds for you to change my life forever. I have been trying to solve this same issue for 30 years. Couldn't get anywhere with yoga and various stretching methods. Never would I have thought of it being a possible nerve issue. But it was and this totally worked for me, thank you!
Wooooooooooow!!!! It works!!! Omg!! I'm very flexible in every other part of my body, except for this parts, I always thought it was the hamstring, but nooooo! It was my nerves! Thank you so very much!!!!!!!
as an ex-gymnast and someone who wants to get into calisthenics, thank you so much, i’ve always known it’s my nerves that were inhibiting my mobility but i never knew how to deal with it. you were not lying when you said it would being instant results.
Oh my god. I used to be really flexible as a child (literally did syncronised swimming) and then moved to other more strength oriented sports. When at 25 I tried to properly stretch again, I've found that I just could not do anything with my hamstrings. 4 years of fruitless searching for techniques, and you have just explained what my actual problem is in a 3 min video. And I could sense that I was missing something before, cause the pain in my "hamstrings" was very different from the pain of stretching anything else. Well, now I know that's cause it's a nerve that was stretching improperly. Thank you so much, I really hope this will be a gamechanger for me.
Hi There! I just figured this out recently and stumbled across your video and now everything is falling into place. I have a question surrounding like working out or stretching while trying to improve nerve tension. should you do your stretching after you have done your nerve glides for the day? Or before working out? Does it really matter what order you do them in? I'm assuming before stretching and after working out?
This explains why stretching yields a lot of pain behind my knees and calves. It would seem I am attempting to stretch my nerves. Will do this before every yoga lesson now. Thank you so much for sharing!
I was a ballerina for 9 years and they always pushed us against the walls to stretch harder. I never understood why no matter what I did, there was always this sensation that something was hard and inelastic in my body that demanded to stay in the same position. Those were my nerves! No wonder I couldn't get more flexible, I was basically forcing it to exhaustion. I am trying to be more flexible now and I always had a hard time with the back of my legs and glutes. After doing your exercise I felt so much lighter in my back, and I actually could put my feel in 90° without bending the knee. What a blessing. You are amazing!
Wow, so glad this came up in my recommended feed. Loved the explanation, incredibly concise yet informative and that troubleshooting part at the 1 min mark was brilliant, loved that. I think I just found my flexibility channel ! Thank you !
What sorcery is this? I've been trying to lengthen my hamstrings for a while now, then I do this and all of a sudden I'm more flexible. In the past year my hips, shoulders and everything else have increased massively, but I always struggled to do any hamstring stretch. Finally.... Thank you. Now I just need to get my ankle mobility fixed and I'll be set

After having spinal decompression and discectomy surgery, my body has never returned to what it was but THIS has helped so much. Especially down my right side. I had ruptured my right achilles before I had my spinal surgery so I imagine my right side was very tight both with muscles and after trying this, my nerves definitely needed some gliding! Relief, increased range and hopefully less chance of future injury. THANK YOU!

I have a lot of problems with these stretches since years, went to physiotherapists, orthopedics and so on...this is the first time I hear something that seems to make sense :o Will definitely try that out!
I have to say that this sequence has given me amazing results to my flexibility. Practicing the 2nd stretch eliminated my right foot plantar fasciitis and sciatica pain in left leg! Is this neural gliding only or combined with muscular stretching? How is it so effective!?!
Dope! Great teaching and practice. With MS, nerves are often inexplicably tight and tense. I have gone through all the "normal" stretching and such to no avail. These nerve training guides have been a revelation!
Looking at the comments… am I the only person this didn’t work for? I’ve never really noticed flexing my ankle making much difference on forward folds, and the glide thing had no effect on range of motion, so I guess I just continue with ordinary stretches

It's quite funny I didn't really improve ROM, but this sorted out a problem I've been having recently, where my leg started to tingle during certain kicks whilst doing my martial arts training. It's really been bothering me because stretching did absolutely nothing. So thank you! I am extremely happy I stumbled upon your channel. I'll also be incorporating your 3 stretch routine. Huge time saver!
I'd love to see a video about fascia. I used to think my pain and lack of mobility was due to stubborn muscles that wouldn't gain flexibility but then discovered fascia. Once I started working on my areas of tight fascia my range of motion improved vastly.
Muscles are like dogs…….nerves are like cats!!
This is the best comment ever 😂
Clear, concise explanation and demo! And I always love your editing style. So crisp and interesting to watch!
I have awful flexibility and just decided to do something about it. I checked out your “3 Stretches” video, which referred me here first.
I just did your test and “failed” everything. Never even heard of nerves creating flexibility issues.
Pumped to try this and the 3 Stretches!!!
Great and helpful content. You showed up in my recommended videos and Im so happy you did. Subscribed :)
I've been having foot pain and tight calves for years. I could feel a significant reduction in tension after doing this. Thank you!
OH MY LORD - that is astounding. BINGO. thank you 💞💞 i feel relief just sitting in bed watching this - it a revalation 🤣🤣
It's now a year, can you tell us if it worked for you
I can't believe this.
Glad it helped!
Sorry May be me, but my range didn’t change?
Same
It worked for me , It wasnt much but noticeable
Then you might just have right hamstrings
didn't work as much as your difference was, but I still got increased by maybe about 10 degrees, could be from the 3 sets/length of time further stretching the leg and not necessarily the nerve stretch but either way guess it gives some more
Sir respectfully if you cannot raise your legs 30 degrees something is wrong. I’d be seeing a physical therapist or a doctor because that’s really bad
I just tried this and it completely worked. I always thought I had tight hamstrings! Will continue to do this, felt so good to be able to finally do the stretch without that nerve tension sensation.
This is insane. I was even able to notice the difference between the pain from actually stretching my hamstring now vs the nerve that I've always felt
I had spine surgery and spent 3 months bed bound in hospital. I can now walk unaided (thank f) and been stretching a lot but I’m going to try this as soon as I get home from work!
My body feels tight and crappy so I hope this is that special nugget of information that makes all the difference 😊
Stopped dance for over 4 years lost a lot of my flexible so slowly trying to get back
wow, always had some sciatic tightness and I was a little skeptical.
Subscribe now, this is like god giving you a chance.
Dont miss it.
(I dont even believe in god)
This is especially valuable for someone like me dealing with multiple sclerosis. My nerves are very sensitive often. thanks for this great information
Before stretching for sure, but also before working out is great as you are mobilising the body for better range of movement!
Can't believe how such a small thing made a huge difference 😱 how often should you do nerve gliding to get rid of the tension for good?
Thank you !
I am an osteopath (canadian) and this is quite helpful for me! (And soon for my clients!)
I tried this and it actually worked
It's amazing 😍😍
What sorcery is this? I've been trying to lengthen my hamstrings for a while now, then I do this and all of a sudden I'm more flexible. In the past year my hips, shoulders and everything else have increased massively, but I always struggled to do any hamstring stretch. Finally.... Thank you. Now I just need to get my ankle mobility fixed and I'll be set
Tried it, as I really struggle with mobility, and INSTANTLY I could move my legs higher than before the glide. Mind blowing!
What do you mean 'fold forward to find a strech'.
I already found that stretch while leaning back...
This is an amazing video. I’ve been doing another video for stretching for over a year now and still can’t stretch my leg like that but I’ve never heard of nerve glides before. I’m going to try this today and see if I can improve my stretching. I’m new to your channel and I’m going to stick with it from now on. I’m 61 and hoping to do the 5k run before Christmas. I’m on week 5 and about to attempt my first 20minute run today so hopefully your videos will help me. Thank you.
Hi, does this apply to any more than just hamstring stretches? I’m a martial artist and it’s extremely important for us to have the middle split, and I’ve always had pretty tight muscles. I’m wondering now if it could be nerves, and how to fix it.
I'm a Certified Stretch Therapist and I'm always learning brilliant techniques from your channel that I can apply at work. Thank you so much! Cheers from a fellow Brit!
WOW, im impressed. My legs are so stiff and streching them is painful. I try this foot excercise and it helped! My limits are temporarily improved :d thank you for this video and i think i will practise regulary this way
After having spinal decompression and discectomy surgery, my body has never returned to what it was but THIS has helped so much. Especially down my right side. I had ruptured my right achilles before I had my spinal surgery so I imagine my right side was very tight both with muscles and after trying this, my nerves definitely needed some gliding! Relief, increased range and hopefully less chance of future injury. THANK YOU!
Best RUclips-Channel for Stretching, Flexibility and Power
Very interesting, I have never heard of this nerve impacting your leg flexibility before. While not as big as in your video, I definitely saw some improvement after doing the exercise. I will keep doing it and see how my flexibility improves.
Just one question!!! How can I apply this hack to my splits routine? I've realised I have neural tension and I want to solve it. Should I do the exercise you showed in the video and then continue with my splits routine?
Thanks for the video!!!
So simple, and I'm amazed at the progress just after a few weeks!
Hi Keith: Do you do the nerve glides everyday & about how much time do you devote to the glides? (Forward bends are like torture to me.)
Didn’t improve my range.
I always learn something new from you. Thank you for sharing this!
Thank you for this. I remember 2 decades ago my physical therapist talking about my sciatica and giving me exercises, but frankly I never understood it. You just simply explained it. Thanks.
Holy hell I've been inflexible my whole life. Went from about 45 degree bend to 60-65 degree. I'm definitely doing this everyday! Thanks!
I really never knew this! Thank you, Livinleggings! It's important to me because I started stretching exercises about 5 months ago, and this will help a lot. Do nerves stretch over time?
Just tried this..... my legs are much more flexible all of a sudden lol My knee pain is gone
Thank you so much! I can‘t believe the difference this made for me. Also, you have a very kind and gentle energy, just watching this video made me relax 🙂
I really like this stretch. I've noticed a difference on my right leg, but my left side is still tight after a few weeks of doing this. Any ideas?
I got a bad anterior pelvic tilt and it spasms every 2-3 months because I used to have bad form when it comes to doing exercises like squats, pushups, planks, and core exercises. I definitely felt a relief to the discomfort that's been lingering every once in a while. Thanks for this video
Also, can you do a video about spasms?
This actually worked! Thank you!
Definitely notice a difference! How many sets should I do a day to improve my nerve glide?
It didn't change anything for me. Do I just keep doing it?
Wow, I did not know this! Thanks! My flexibility issues make so much sense now.
Is this also a routine I should be doing daily or on what frequency?
Wow as someone whose legs are about as flexible as a concrete post I just tried this and it totally works! Same extra range increase as in the video, thanks so much for this information.
I knew that ballet dancers and gymnasts flex and point their foot when stretching and it helps , but I didn't know how it works. Thanks!
I will definitely try this today before my split challenge exercise. Thank you. :-)
