I think they were headed to Long Branch as the ALP-46 is electric only. If it was an ALP-45DP then it would be heading to Bay Head as it can switch from electric to diesel power. The track between Long Branch and Bay Head has no overhead wires.

I live near there, and I drive through that intersection (in any of the possible directions) several times a week. It's pretty close to the station, although not so close that the stopped train will keep the gates down for several minutes.

It was across the street I didn't care to much for that crossing because there was to much traffic
On the second train from NYC the gates seemed to have went down just in time
I had to edited it because the train stopped and the gates were down for more than a minute.
One of the only quad gate crossings in NJ
The only other one I've seen is the Bellvue Ave crossing in Upper Montclair...
