Disappointed Chandler didn't sing the awful bawdy song too. The world where a splice of them singing it together to different tunes/speeds is one I wanna live in. Truly the biggest let down of the 2020 quarantine.

"I was right... as I always am..." lmao me every time I read these 'unpredictable' YA romance novels
My advice to anyone on Daisy Jones: get the audiobook and forget the physical book. The audio is wonderfully immersive, and my observation is that almost everyone who loved it listened to it, and people who hate it almost exclusively read the physical book.
I agree. I LOVE that book. You have to do the audio.
good to know! thank you!
YES THE AUDIOBOOK IS AMAZING
I totally agree! I’ve never been a fan of audiobooks and always preferred physical books. But I decided to make an exception for this one and it was the best decision. I listened to the audiobook while simultaneously reading along with it and it ended up being one of the best and most immersive reading experiences I’ve ever had

I feel the exact same way about Wayward Son. I adored Carry On and was so excited and then it just went no where? Not only was there now plot there was no character development, Simon and Baz end up exactly where they started.
YES!
All of the Lord of The Flies comparisons to Wilder Girls really annoy me because aside from "a (different) survival situation on an island," there really isn't much similarity. I think it's really set an expectation that it definitely is not.
Beth Halverson me too! It really frustrates me because while they are both some of my favorite novels, they don't actually have very much in common imo.
Wayward Son was also one of my most disappointing reads of 2019. It was easily my most hyped book ever was SO let down. Now that time has passed, I have an appreciation for how this was an exploration of how to love someone who is so depressed and how to communicate when you are deeply depressed. Since Rainbow announced a third book now I just kinda think this book just suffers from middle book syndrome.
My hope is that once the third book is out I’ll have a greater appreciation for Wayward Son once I can view it differently once Simon and Baz’s story arc when it’s completely done.
I honestly actually really enjoyed the book once I stepped outside of the bubble from the first book. Honestly I think what catches people off guard is the somewhat abrupt change in tone, especially in the tone of simon and baz's relationship. That definitely made me pretty sad while reading it, but I feel like it added complexity to it, and it made it more lifelike. The other thing I realized (and imo the mortal insturments, and the continuation series of percy jackson also struggles with this) is that there are almost way too many characters, and they all have their part to play in the plot, but it's a lot to keep track of and so what wasn't ideal was having something from the first book or earlier chapters pop up, and I'd have to look it up again to be able to remind myself what happened before being able to follow what is actually happening. Though that's only a minor inconvenience for me since this series isn't that long. And yeah there were many things that I wanted to be answered that weren't, it was still pretty thoughtful at setting it all up for the next book at least.
YES these are my thoughts exactly. (Carry On is like my favorite book so I'm very passionate lol!) I was so heartbroken by the end of Wayward Son--I didn't understand why Rowell would write a sequel just for our characters to have an underwhelming & unsatisfying end. But then the third book was announced, so it all made sense.
I enjoyed the book as it was happening, but after looking back and trying to defend.... yeah, there's a lot that doesnt happen in general
I'm with you also with hoping the third book might make me appreciate Wayward Son a little more, but that would be a lot
What I took from wayward son was that it was meant to show that life goes on after the villain is defeated. There isn’t a party or congratulations. It’s just life, everything just continues and they forget about the hero. Although I agree there wasn’t much point to the plot, I think it was necessary as a set up for the third and final book.
It's funny because I just finished Steven Universe Future today and when I think about Simon in Wayward Son it just reminds me a lot of Steven. The whole here who doesn't know how to go through a normal life when the fighting is over
I actually really liked the book.
THERES A THIRD?
Angelica Starlington YES it’s coming out 2021 I believe!!!!

wilder girls legitimately made me realize that I'm super into body horror & got me into venturing into the world of horror for the first time ever so I totally relate to you with your review of it! I totally loved it too
If you like body horror and don't mind manga, I highly recommend you check out Junji Ito (if you haven't already). Junji Ito is considered the king of horror manga for good reason.
@@zakle3805 ooo I love manga but haven't read Junji
Added to my list for sure
@@victoriashaz He's certainly a must read for horror manga. Junji Ito is probably one of the most eccentric mangakas; his stories are out there and yet he makes them work. I mean, who else can make spirals, cats, and fish scary in the way he can?
Theres a similar-ish book that's called The Call be Peadar O'Guillin and the body horror in that is definitely a few steps above wilder girls but I definitely preferred it and reccomend checking it out ^-^
One thing that I loved about Serpent and Dove, was the warring religions. The romance was find and I overall liked the oui oui aspect. Everything else on the list I did not enjoy.
i loved the warring religions too! tbh wish there had been more emphasis on that
the "oui oui" aspect XD
Yikes - imagine not liking an author because you think shipping Reylo is controversial and reflects badly on the author themselves. ☠️ people need to calm down.
planetfierce exactly!
i personally don't care either way (haven't seen star wars). i just like to provide context to other people's disappointment with a book/author lol
chandler ainsley completely understand! My criticism isn't to you specifically, but to the people who take issue with this. Like, we're all allowed to like some fictional problematic shit every now and then
I read Wayward Son and actually liked it more than Carry On because I felt that Wayward Son explored mental health well and showed readers what happens to the hero after he has won the battle. I also felt like WS was quick-paced whereas Carry On dragged on.
I’m so happy you like Sorcery of Thorns! It was one of my favourite books of last year & Silas is my favourite. It makes me so sad the amount of people that didn’t like it or were disappointed by it
Silas was the savioring grace for me. He reminded me so such of Sebastian from Black Butler.
I liked serpent and dove more as time passes after I finished reading it. The fantasy/world building was so lacking, but the romance was decent because it had my favorite tropes
Dani A I was the opposite! I went from 4star to 3 star on reflection especially after watching Bowties and Books’ vídeo on it.
Im sorry, but what is controversial about a author shipping reylo? I need clarification.
twitter & google are ur best friend.
Yeah, I'm a little confused......
There's nothing controversial about it. There are plenty of people who don't like it and seem to think they have the right to dictate what other women can and can't enjoy in fictional stories, but that's not controversy, that's just very sad thought/purity policing. Unfortunately some people just can't recognize that other people are capable of divorcing fiction from reality and wouldn't endorse a relationship like that in real life while being able to enjoy its drama in a fictional world.
I know my friends hate it because a) he’s a nazi by in-universe standards and also tortured her and b) the friends that are also* black think a lot of things about Ben Solo’s redemption arc are just wholesale lifted from Finn’s story, but reylo shippers don’t like Finn, and are side-eyeing the ship hard because of that. (*also = I’m black but don’t wanna say these are my own opinions bc I haven’t watched anything beyond the force awakens (largely bc besides a nice two week stretch right after the movie came out, the fandom surrounding the new movies turned me tf off))
You can't disappoint, honestly. Every video you post makes me feel entertained, comfortable and happy. You're the best, thanks for being yourself!
I loved Sorcery of Thorns. It wasn’t the best book I’ve ever read, but it was the most fun I’ve had while reading YA fantasy in a really long time
Same same!
Exactly! I haven't liked an main protagonist this much in a while!!
@@sanjanapatel6402 Its not even her that made the book enjoyable for me! It was definitely the combination of Nathaniel, Silas and herself!!

I thought I was going crazy when I didn’t like Wicked Saints bc I had heard good things about it but I hated Nadya more than I hated Alina in Shadow and Bone and that’s saying quite a lot
Miranda Rose I didn’t know it was possible to hate someone more than Alina now I might have to check that book out
I couldn't finish it! It just wasn't well written, there was so much info missing to link scenes together I genuinely don't understand how it got published 🤔
@@ericab1302The missing info was so bad, and the weird time skips killed me too. It was overall a really confusing book, especially when the magic is different and more complicated then what you would normally see in YA but then the author wouldn't explain it well. I was so interested but confused throughout the first book until I read the second book, which cleared some parts up. But I still think she should've just explained in the first book, since she had characters like the witch that were basically just there to give info anyway.
i bought wilder girls purely for the cover lmao but ig now ima have to actually read it
to be fully honest, im not gonna spoil you, but just so you have a different opinion, i wrote a 3 paragraph rant about this book and i rated it one star, in the beginning i thought i was gonna rate it 4 or 5, but here we are and here i am with a one-star review on this book lol
have fun reading it tho!
For me, Wilder Girls was a three star read. It had a nice enough concept but I felt like not enough was happening in the book. Not bad but not gripping either
I love the cover artist: Aykut Aydogdu
@@tapititytap Oh my gosh I didn't even realize who it was! I really like some of their works.
Wilder Girls' ending felt like a cliff-hanger to me, however, it also felt like the novel as a whole was half the story and that's why it feels this way. It feels like a confirmation that there will be a sequel, and I'm so dang worried about Hetty, and I really, really enjoyed this book, that I ain't even mad about it. I mean, it has flaws but I love it.
I disagree, I think this was a very intentionally open ending where you are left to wonder what happens. I completely understand why that’s not for everyone but it’s a writing choice i absolutely love because of the potential implications. In Wilder Girls the key is we root for Hetty and Reese, but the ending suggests we contemplate that their escape, if successful, may be the literal end of the world. I think there will never be a sequel because there’s a lot of power in understanding this and leaving us wondering.
wilder girls is an incredibly written novel, the only problem with it is THE END.
Ninth House, Serpent and Dove, Wicked Saints and A Sorcery of Thorns were some if my favourites for 2019. Are they perfect? No! They have many issues, but they were also some of the most entertaining books I've picked up and I read all of them in one breath. To me the entertainment value of a book is the most important variable.
i was STRESSED to see wilder girls on the thumbnail because it was one of my favorite books i read in the last year, but then i saw your ranking on goodreads and felt much better :) i really really enjoyed it and found it to be super unique! really enjoyed the whole video and it brightened up my crappy day!
Nah say sike I LOVED ninth house, I've read it 3 times
i'm excited to get to it!
I’ve also read it three times. I think it’s really original and I love the main character. :)
Serpent and dove is my favourite book so hearing that people don’t like it HURT ngl
I'm so sad people don't like an author cause she's a Reylo shipper. :(
Seriously this is such a stupid reason.
@@GothMissCammo There's plenty of ships I don't agree with...but I don't dislike anyone who has them. Ship-shaming shouldn't exist. Fandom makes me sad.

i thought wicked saints was okay but i found the writing super distracting because i felt like the author was trying way too hard to be deep and write quotes that people would post on tumblr and reblog. i kept thinking "can u please stop saying the word monster 6 times in each page i get it"
ooof i feel that
I’m mad every time I remember Wicked Saints exists because the synopsis sounds like everything I’ve ever wanted but I see like no comments that make it sound worth reading 😤
Anna Hill I really like wicked saints and i can’t wait to check out the sequel soon
Wicked Saints was my most anticipated read of 2019. The author had some great ideas, but bad execution. It has duel perspectives, but the author plays favorites making the other main character seams like an after thought. Weirdly, I knew right away the author was a fan girl. There are unmistakable references to game of thrones and Howl's Moving Castle. Finally, she adds useless side characters who happen to be brown for added ~diversity~ I'd skip!
I really enjoyed it, at the end of the day. The magic is super interesting and I find the characters really interesting. I'm looking forward to see their development in Ruthless Gods.
@@SEH221 I really like the magic and world aspect too! I think the magic in Wicked Saints was really confusing for me, but I was lucky to read it just as Ruthless Gods came out and I think the second book cleared a lot more things up.
@@amegamooch I totally agree with you on the dual perspectives thing; the summary made it sound like Serefin would be traveling and working together with the rest of the group so it was super confusing when the book started with him wrecking the monastery and then everyone only really met at the end.
I really liked Wicked Saints and Serpent and Dove 🤷🏻♀️
Serpant and dove was a BLAST for me lolol

The Girl in Red by Christina Henry has is pretty similar to Wilder Girls. It's about a girl trying to get to her grandma's after a disease swiped out a large percentage of the population. Clearly a government conspiracy is going on, but the main character is just trying to get by and survive on her own and isn't concerned much with the whole of humanity.
Also the movie Annihilation has super similar vibes to wilder girls. Both of them have very visceral scenes with diseased bears in houses
“popping a chub” killed me istg
my biggest fear when hearing that rainbow rowell was adapting the fanfic in fangirl into a book series was that she didnt really know where she was gonna go with it. The excerpts in Fangirl are strategic, things that tell you things about Cath or what's happening in the story, but they were meant to be a satisfying story on their own. Hearing your thoughts on Wayward Son just confirm my fears tbh
carry on is fantastic! just should have stayed a standalone
I literally just finished Wilder girls, it was a different from what I expected (definitely a little too hyped up), but I still really enjoyed it!
Bless you and your A+ content in our great time of need

If you want some more light horror books with isolation themes I'd really recommend The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling! You follow this girl while she has to explore an extensive cave system by herself with her only connection to the outside being this not so trustworthy "surface team"
I just started A Sorcery of Thorns and wasn't sure how I was feeling about it, so I was very excited to see that you liked it!! I'm now wanting to dive in and fully immerse myself in the story. Thank you so much!!
Its so good. I hope you like it
i love how daisy jones and ninth house were two of my favorite books i read last year lol
the only thing i like about serpent and dove is the cover. i just find it so pretty.
agree!
i actually really liked S&D and thought the romance was good and i admit its not the greatest book because of the little details but overall i enjoyed it. i have it 4/5 and im still ready for the next one :)
I know you aren't reading Ninth House for this video, but I think a lot of the reason why people were disappointed is because it's SO different from The Grisha Trilogy and Six of Crows. I think all of her fans were wanting Ninth House to fit in with Leigh Bardugo's other books and still be recognizable as her, but it's just completely different. I absolutely loved the book, but I also did not enjoy The Grisha Trilogy or Six of Crows and had absolutely no expectations going in because of that.
that's a good observation. i'm not a huge fan of her YA so maybe i will love it!
I love this dress on you 😍 so pretty
thank you
wayward son is by far my most disappointing book of 2019!! carry on is my favorite book ever, and wayward son was such a let down. :'(
I tried to read Serpant and Dove cause a booktuber I watched loved it, and it was Enemies to Lovers which is my favourite trope. But it was so boring and had no plot so I dnfd it. I then found out that the author loves and is inspired by Sarah J Maas and I hate her books. So me not liking it made a lot of sense.
As a filthy reylo, seeing people try to cancel an author based on her ships is just hilarious to me.
I hated Wilder Girls so much. Not just the ending but it was too vague for me. I also didn't care for Wicked Saints but read the sequel anyway and its also blah. I enjoyed Serpent and Dove and Sorcery of Thorns quite a lot. I didn't read Wayward Son.
Lol now I wanna read half of these books. Love your way of critiquing without ranting.
I thought Sorcery of Thorns was boring at times, rushed through the ending because I found myself not caring.
A lot of stuff felt brushed over, we didn't get to see her having conversations with her friend through the mirror, it was just told to us. Things like that just made me baffled.
i just started reading wilder girls today bc i wanted to indulge in the irony of a book about girls in quarantine. i'm only an hour into the audiobook but i'm really enjoying the plot building so far. planning on reading serpent & dove next mainly for the witch aspect. anyways thx for ur reviews! glad to see a fellow texan booktuber on here

Alyssa Garcia omg felt that 😂💀
Wilder Girls was one of my favorite books of 2019. I can't understand people hating it
The fact that I’ve read 5 of the 6 books in the thumbnail and I loved 4 of them 💀
Please, do write your own book. I'd buy it in a heartbeat 😂
I've been reading books since I've literally learnt to read, and the more time passes, the more my standards seem to become ridiculously high. There's now a lot of tropes I can't stand and it's been years since I've last found a 5 star book 😭
I started reading Wilder Girls but ended up DNFing it because it was so lame and vanilla
The thing with wicked fox, I think people will enjoy it if you love Kdrama and korean culture. I listened to it on audiobook and it felt like playing a Kdrama in the background and for once I didn’t need the subtitle!
you’re probably right! i admittedly don’t know enough about korean culture
I adored wilder girls it was one of my fave reads of 2019 ❤
I love the way you review bc you’re SO good at explaining the plot/mood/writing/characterization and putting your finger on why do like/dislike a book which is so helpful when I’m trying to decide if it’s something I’d want to read myself 💗❤️💓 you’ve definitely helped me grow my to-read list lmao
I enjoyed Sorcery of Thorns, but I found it a little boring at times.
Hey I’m a relatively new subscriber here and I haven’t read a single book you’ve recommended yet but I’m so glad I found your channel. I used to read so much when I was younger and I was constantly in the middle of a book throughout the torments of middle school especially. Then I started high school and got both a phone and a worse case of depression, which kind of killed my bookly escapades. I’m graduated now and working on trying to read more and this channel is so inspiring to me and so pleasant to listen to. It’s reminding me of how I used to cope with things and certain moods I used to have🥰 I especially remember finding perfect music-book matches and sinking into the moods and world of those characters so completely that I forgot I existed for a while and would come out of the book like I was waking up from a beautiful dream. So if you read this thank you from the bottom of my heart for rekindling my love of books and letting me meet with my past self in the gentlest way~
yesss your videos are literally a light in a dark tunnel right now, thank you queen 🥺
i feel like i'm the only one who liked wayward son more than carry on. i loved the setting, the worldbuilding, and shepard. i do think it did kind of fuck up simon and baz's development though.
absolutely agreed with you! i personally liked the book and think it's a good way to lead over to the third book but i wish that simon and baz would have had more development and scenes but i get that she might've been waiting to include that in the third book
What? Wilder Girls 5 Stars? How? It wasn't like the worst book, but lord was it boring, and too many of the twists were so coincidental 😴😴😴
And also it seems everyone who read the Sorcery of Thorns was more interested in the demon than in the love interest xD
I loved Wicked Saints and the second book as well. I gave the first book 5 stars. I have seen so many bad reviews for it. I remember being hesitant to pick it up. The second one is good as well, but the pacing is different from the first book.i loved the first one better than the second book.
I feel personally attacked that you didn't like Wayward Son at all 😂
adorkthatreads sameee, like when I saw it on the thumbnail I was like, ok I’ve gotta watch this
I love how differently people can view books, yet reach the same conclusions. I was So disapointed by Wayward Son, but the only parts I enjoyed were Agatha and Shepard. Without going into detail, I felt as if this book ruined Penny for me as a character, same with Simon and maybe even Baz.
Your thoughts on wayward son are such a mirror of my experience with it. Except adding in some fury at bi-erasure. I so hope the 3rd book redeems it.
Serpent and Dove (Spoilers:) was really just underwhelming to me, Im interested in the sequel (I seriously cant believe taht your prediction was spot), the entire time I was thinking "i wish I had a book about male witches" so I feel like I should five the sequel a shot and hope for the best lol But I couldnt even make a review video after I was done cuz I was just like....meh. Low 3 for sure
I'm really pleased you also liked Wilder Girls! I loved it but everyone seems to hate it lol :(
To be completely honest i was dissapointed of Wayward Son at first. But now the more i think about it the more it makes sense. Its the perfect bridge from the first to the last book. It was a book to help them discover himself. Baz got to find out more about himself and now hes more comfortable with being a vamp. Simon discovered more about his sexuality and he needed to travel to america to be able to find himself. Penelope wanted to help simon get out of his shell again and it worked. She wanted to realse the books back to back but ended up getting sick halfway through wayward son so she didnt get to finishe Anyway The Wind Blows. I trust her fully and i do feel like wayward son was rushed but it does make sense
i’m glad i’m not the only one who hella enjoyed wilder girls. it was only a 4 star for me, but it was fun while still being really dark
The dedication you have to your videos is something else 😅👌🏻
I appreciate that you took wether you like certain books despite their flaws into account. Honestly, my issue with book reviews will always be the fact that some people (and i mean in general like on goodreads) don’t take into account wether they enjoyed the book despite ridiculous plot devices or characters. Sometimes it isn’t about tropes or if things necessarily seem realistic but wether this world and what’s happening draws you in. I really hate seeing people trash on some books just for a specific plot point or transition into the story because that’s not the entire book. anyways that’s just my opinion so please don’t come for me eek
I think Wayward Son is supposed to be parodying Harry Potter and Supernatural. That's what I felt when I read this book.
God thank you for 40+ mins of Chandlers voice ily
It's funny, I read Wayward Son and then Wilder Girls just like you and felt the exact same about both of them (the only difference being that I was a bit disappointed by the ending of Wilder Girls coz I just wanted to know more about what happens next and thought it ended too soon). But yes to everything else. I also enjoyed reading Wilder Girls while we were in quarantine as a kind of similar yet extreme version of our current state. I loved Carry On, one of my favourites. But the sequel was completely pointless and boring :/
almost 50 minutes of chan chan content!!! thank you
Even if Wayward Son was mostly setup for a third book it was a SLOG. It was just....barely enjoyable. Whats the point of the book if it just gives us nothing but possible setup. Wild how completely different it felt to Carry On.
Love my hardbacks and paperbacks, however in this fast paced tech driven world, I SO appreciate AUDIOBOOKS!! 😊💜🎶📚👂🏻
To be honest I had trouble with the plot of Wicked Saints too. The way the story was paced was ATROCIOUS, or maybe that’s just my confusion weighing in. Didn’t hate it, I’m going to read Ruthless Gods, but yeah.

Ok, I got very excited about Wilder Girls so I had to buy it right away. I am so tired of book series and neverending "females" and "males" in YA. I didn't realize how much I need something fresh right now.
I feel so much more validated about Wicked Fox lol. It just wasn’t what the description advertised versus what the plot really was.
The description was very woo!adventure! And then I was like woah there’s a lot of mommy issues in here dang.. and I just didn’t like the speed and the way (?) everything developed. You really helped me verbalize what I didn’t like but I felt bad because so many people loved this. Wicked Fox really felt like a lot of side quests took over the main level lol.
Your description of serpent and dove makes me wanna rewrite it. And I'd never heard of it before. hahaha
One of my most disappointing reads was American Royals. First of all, it's a kind of problematic concept to begin with that George Washington would've become a king instead of a president (like, reversing the path and ideology of our nation who?), but then it BARELY EVEN DEVELOPS THAT CONCEPT. The main characters are basically just celebrities except with more responsibilities I guess?? History barely changes at all and is barely discussed, it's all just focused on these horny teenagers and their relationships which, by the way, are terrible. Pretty much every single one of them is somehow complicated and everyone is in love with someone they're not supposed to be in love with and blah blah blah. It's so dramatic in the worst way possible (imo). The worst part though? The ending. It went completely unresolved. The climax was basically right at the end and then just boom, done. I was so mad I threw the book across the room. Such a waste of time. However if you want something that's just angsty relationship drama with a very slight royal twist on the celebrity, then this book is maybe for you? Overall -5/10 for me though.
Wicked Fox was so disappointing. Like it was just so many things going on. The tone was all over the place. Like our introduction to Miyong was kind of a anti or dark hero, buddy cop kind of vibe. Then it becomes a slice of life. It needed a strong narrative, didn't need to be a sequel. I feel like the romantic relationship was unnecessary or maybe the direction was misguided. I'd probably have preferred a Black Lagoon style where the normal guy is kind of taken into the crazy. I would have liked her enjoying being this supernatural creature. There is no trope I hate as much as the woah is me and my nature. Curse me. Like I was just so underwhelmed. The best character was the mother/grandma. I'd rather have the mothers story.
I liked Serpent & Dove it was kind of good I like the writing style because it was easily read. But I agree the relationship didn’t build up there, it was more of a comfort. Like you have something in your daily routine and when you lose it you miss it. I feel like that’s how the relationship was xD
Sorcery of Thorns was also kind of good, like the the writing style is good so you can go through it but it was not insanely good. The relationship wasn’t strong either. I liked the demon friend the most. Lol. An enchantment of ravens was way much better! Loved the angst. I’m glad I read it after because it was an upgrade.
My daughter has the completed "Percy Jackson" series. Maybe is time for me to borrow that collect. 😁

Personally I just didn't find myself caring about any of the characters in Wilder Girls. So overall I just wasn't invested in anything that happened to them throughout the book. Also wasn't a fan of the dual perspectives and it just felt unfinished to me. Concept was very interesting, the execution just wasn't for me.
Exactly. Hetty was obsessive. Byatt had almost no flaws which made her boring, and Reese was just the stereotypical cool but tortured stereotype in LESBIAN EDITION.😂
I was so sad about Wilder Girls, I wanted it to be so good and it was just underwhelming💀like I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t LOVE it like I thought I would
I agree with your thoughts on S&D. Like it’s not good but I like it???? There are so many issues but I’ve still reread because something about the book drew me back buttttttt it’s not really that good?? I’m still confused but I’ll be reading the next.
