Defending Katagatame: Escaping the Head and Arm Triangle from Bottom (No Gi BJJ)

- Defending Katagatame (2 Methods): katagatame (aka the arm triangle) has always been one of our favorite submissions. We like to set it up from the mounted position ( • Katagatame (Head and A... ), but anytime we can create conditions for an extended arm in passing the guard is a good time to look for the head and arm. In many cases, trying to DEFEND katagatame creates a dillemma - either you stay and risk getting finished, or you expose your back to give up a worse position in exchange for escaping the submission (🤞🏽). We look today at 2 types of katagatame escapes. First, what happens when we’re caught in the katagatame off the guard pass with our back slightly exposed, where we emphasize a bridging movement that allows us to move our lower body so we can circle through and duck out. Next, what happens when you’re caught with both shoulders pinned and need to bridge once again (this time into your partner with the goal of circling the arm out).

Whenever I find myself smashed in a position (like I did just yesterday) I look to see what my favorite instructors have to say one of which is Brian. OSS
😉
This channel is a hidden gem!
😊😊😊
Magic 🎱 I trust whatever shows up in my feed from you is what I need to review immediately. My stiff shoulder prevented my go-to escape yesterday. Here you are (1 year ago) to my rescue for the next time I'm stuck. The generosity of the library you have already created is incredible. Thank you!
Awesome - glad to hear it. Thanks for your support 🙏🏼
Thank you for the detailed instructional professor. I really like the first escape, and have been looking for a solid kata gamate escape. Can't wait to try them out!
Excellent 😊

Thanks for the video, Brian. Could you perhaps do a video on what to do as a passer when you have control of the hips and passed the legs but you don't have control of the head yet and the opponent is framing on the near side arm? I've see that you can go back into the legs and make the knees turn away before you crawl up, but yeah, don't know if there are other things that could be done.
Yes - this is a common issue. We'll cover it in a video :)
@@bzglick, looking forward to it. Thanks.
Would you recommand this escape also when kata gatame is established from Mount?
Much harder from mount - when they’re atop you any turn out leads to the back
🔥🔥🔥
🙏🏼
Do you have a school Professor? If so, where do you teach? Thanks so much
Yes I am at brooklynbjj
@@bzglick Thanks for the info Professor. I looked up brooklynbjj and there are several locations. Dyker Heights, Gravesend, Bay Parkway, Clinton Hill, Cobble Hill. Which one do you teach at?
Clinton Hill 👍🏼
@@bzglick Thanks for the reply, Professor!
😊
Why isn't the guy putting on a proper Kesa Gatame?
Anybody can escape such a weak and incorrect hold
"with a girl"
Das ist doch kein Kata gatame!!!
