Waste of Money: NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti Review & Benchmarks

- The long-awaited NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti GPU is out!… of stock. But if you wanted to see what $1200 got a scalper, we’ve got our full review of this opportunistic gouge of a video card.

When NVIDIA sent its RTX 3080 Ti for review, we didn't yet know the price of the card. Learning of the pricing in the live event really changed the course of the review: At $1200, NVIDIA is opportunistically gouging its customers in a predatory fashion. The RTX 3080 Ti vs. the RTX 3090 is a carefully set narrative, as is the RTX 3080 Ti vs. 2080 Ti or RX 6900 XT -- but versus the RTX 3080 and RX 6800 XT, we see a different story. In this review and benchmark of the NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti Founders Edition card, we'll test noise, thermals, memory temperatures, gaming performance, and power -- but we're cutting the review short because, simply, it's an aggressive push in price that doesn't match the performance hike.

Game obviously a Vram hungry one because game’s are only going to use more Vram over time so stuff the card full
Just really push the hardware and see what happen’s because I’m curious what a 3080 would do vs a 3090 under the same overuse scenario and im more interested in seeing if the 3080 can even do that without crapping out due to running out of Vram even if thats simple paste looking model’s die to bot being able to load the model’s and texture’s
I dont know how you measure the power draw on 6700 xt, but i have Powercolor Hellhound 6700 XT (3 fan) that even with OC didnt pull more than 215W and you have stock with more..
@@Eklerche well the bio's limits the max draw, voltage will change the draw as there is normally a fixed amperage behind it, and then there is heat, hotter the card the slower it runs
so you need to look at the bio's limit, crank the voltage up and make sure its under 60c and then you can crank the core and memory, remember these arnt Nvidia card's or RDNA 1 and older, these cards will happily go over 2.6GHz
also its under a furmark load, a powervirus push it to the absolut max test that is used to create the load
This issue i had on the 1080ti past year, and the 3090 had simular issues. I was thinking it was a G-sync problem. I tried many different setups. But not changed screens. So it might be an driver to.. for me it's a hard skip. I did own the 3090 for 3 months. But it was not good enough for 4k yet. Some games sure. But the card struggled to get 60fps in many titles that i was playing at that time. We had å few unicorn titles that was good. But not worth the price. Im optimistic on next gen to be the card for all 4k titles. This gen was a finger off to be there. Need that 20% bump
@@commanderoof4578 You didnt get my point i know how to OC my card it still doesnt draw what he is showing in the graph.

This 🤣
Oh its coming lol, can't wait
Why would they do that?
At this point Nvidia can just set the price to $2,000 just to see what would happen.
They will probably still be selling out.
The 3090 can sit pretty comfortably completely sold out with a 3000$ MSRP.
@@PilotTed Nahh it's not a risk. These things will get scalped up still, And people out there with cash burning a hole will want one bad enough to pay 500+ extra! The game is so crazy and out of control but is still running.. And there's money to be made.
They totally could. Which is why I disagree with all this price gouging narratives that Steve and so many are pushing. Things are worth exactly what people are willing to pay. Who told people it's NVIDIA's job to give people cards at affordable prices? Last time I checked it's a businesses job to make as much money as possible. Welcome to capitalism 101. That thing that always gets a bad rep today but has still managed to bring more out of poverty then all other economic system PUT TOGETHER. That thing that has led to places like America being the number one place people want to migrate to. lol All I see is a bunch of sour grapes especially with today's brainwashed youth. And this is coming from someone who was stuck with a POS GTX 660 since 2013 until a few weeks ago when I finally managed to win a newegg shuffle for a 3060. Do you think I wanted to pay almost 700 bucks for it? WTF am I suppose to do with this POS gigabyte 850w PSU that nobody wants? But it is what it is and I'm not complaining. It was still a lot cheaper then ebay or Amazon.
Hence the values of other Gaming Products The Scalpers won't buy will be the ultimate gaming values. I remember when Retro Arcade Cabinets without the tech of now the prices are like from $5,000 - $500,000 to get one for constant play. Because the tech now days are so advanced, we all can make a Retro Arcade Machine ourselves.. also you can buy an Arcade Cabinet Kit for $300 or even less.
The real reason The Scalpers are taking the GPU market is because of The Miners. Also the demands are too high. You can also thank Businesses like The Car Dealerships having a high demand for Chips as well, the one product you need to make a GPU.. Also looks like The Scalpers aren't taking normal computers hilarious enough. Also The APU Market is getting better and better. And of course Scalpers aren't gonna buy all the cars because that will destroy them and they really could too.
@@GrenadeMagnet eh I was almost with you until the bootlicking capitalist part. A lot of it is just built on exploiting third world labor and extracting their resources, and plus I've learned through plenty of struggle and recessions, been taken advantage of by every employer I've worked for. Today's youth is jaded about capitalism for a reason, and not necessarily saying China or Venezuela is good or w/e strawman people can throw at that. But yeah I agree GPU manufacturers are just doing what's good for business lol😆

@@Kholaslittlespot1 there wasn’t much between the 3080 and 3090 to begin with, absolutely no room for a Ti variant in between those. The ti is a pathetic increase over the 3080.

I will happily pay this price as long as it's retail that's still less than the scalpers want for a 3070.
@@agrojester1156 The only reason they are charging this much is because of scalpers and shortages. You are being played if you think $1200 = 'value' or a 'good deal'.
IMO, you shouldn't be happy to pay this inflated MSRP unless you are happy to continue paying absurd prices for every new generation of GPUs.
@@WickedRibbon value and good deal are subjective.
@@WickedRibbon a good deal is relative and subjective. he said, as long as it less that 3070 scalper price. On the one hand, this is marginally better they take this excess miner/moron money than the scalpers
However the price is still awful.

There will always be fanboys, in the 60s there were car fanboys, today it's Apple, console and graphics card fanboys, if the rest of us voted with our wallets these people will change their tune.
I dont care what card I have as long as its good value for money, unfortunately AMD have also jumped on the scalper bandwagon. When you only have 2 companies to choose from and they both charge high prices I'm pretty sure thats called price fixing.
2-3% better. To quote a Blood G-d, "That's placebo levels of improvement. That could be bugged and you wouldn't even know."

As someone who hasn't followed the whole GPU products and doesn't have the time to research everything - the overall conclusion is buy a RTX 3080 if it can be found at MSRP?
I find regular 3080s for the same price or even higher than the street price of the 3080 Ti, so for my situation, it didn't matter that the OG 3080 is better bang-for-the-buck, the price isn't right now and the 3080 Ti is more available for a less-scalped price compared to their respective MSRP, so going with the 3080 Ti in this market isn't a bad deal considering the state of things.

LTT is a marketing channel, NOT a Tech channel. It does not belong in the same discussion as GN.
It's funny to watch this review, appreciate everything said, and go buy a 3080ti anyways.
Because while the imaginary price on the 3080ti may be "offensively" higher than the imaginary price on the 3080, in terms of street price the separation really isn't anything like that at all. It's more like a couple hundred bucks, which I'm okay spending for a modest performance uplift and a more appropriate amount of VRAM for 4k gaming. Obviously if 3080s were $699 this wouldn't be worth the premium but they're not. That number has no correlation to anything here in the corporeal world.
Mine is in the mail. I finally got it for an acceptable price. Benchmarks show that the memory helps for 4k compared to 3080 plus from what I saw the prices are nearly similar to TIs price. RTX 3090 vram is underutilized, and its existence for gaming isn't justified.
@@couchguy427 mine was just over 1500, but after taxes and shipping it was more like 1650 (which still hurts a bit btw, that's a whole freaking PC!), but it's hard to argue with the results.
You're absolutely right about the 3090, and to be clear it's not just that I don't think many things can physically *use* 24GB of, but that nearly anything that can is beyond even a 3090 in the first place. This makes the 3080TI a tempting proposition as the top "practical" card - just about all of the badwidth of a 3090, but with a frame buffer that's within reason.
Just to give an example of what it's like to actually approach 12GB of use, Mechwarrior 5 at "3440x1440" (DLSS Quality) with Ray Tracing jacked up, will use ~10GB of VRAM, and that would seem like a fine use case for this card, but it's worth noting that at those settings, the game also brings even a 3080TI to its knees, dragging down to like 40fps in action scenes. Having something use double that, most of the time, would just be so intensive that no card could run it anyways - same reason I don't care about the M1 Ultra's potential VRAM allocation. Yes, there are some workloads that are light on computing power but heavy on VRAM, but typically these things are high or low in a very hand-in-hand fashion.
As for the 3080TI, I'm pretty happy. The comparison with my old 2080 is interesting. In high resolution applications, the advantage in VRAM bandwidth takes the 3080TI to JUST about double my 2080 (both cards are OCed Gigabyte models), not just at 4k, but even my slightly-lower 3440x1440 resolution. But what I've found is that that advantage holds in *any* super intensive workload, even at lower resolutions. Unigine Superposition, for instance, at just 2560x1440 but max settings, had a performance curve of ~20fps on my 2060, ~30fps on my 2080, and ~60fps on my 3080TI (none of those rounded by more than 2fps). Star Citizen, when not CPU capped, performs similarly.
I bet other super heavy titles (Control, Cyberpunk 2077, etc) would behave similarly - the 3080TI commands a big advantage over the 2080, in workloads intensive enough to actually need it. More modest workloads, where I'm going from "already-high to merely-higher" framerates see more modest gains (sometimes down to "only" +50%).
My card caps at 350W of usage, and barely passes 70C doing it, even in a warm(ish) room, and it's really quite quiet at those temps.
Dang that was deep
I did the same exact thing on launch day. Watched the vid, even laughed a bit at Steve's hyperbole about gamers behind "robbed" (legit still cracks me up - no one's being forced to buy Nvidia products lol), and still bought my EVGA 3080 ti at MSRP. I've had the card since June 2021 and I still absolutely love it. No regrets at all.
@@Catamount1412 24GB will be mostly you doing 3D rendering and with multiple 3D editing applications opened simultaneously with very high resolution textures as Nvidia demonstrates in their video. Jay also has a video on about VRAM usage. It only make sense when "Time is money" in a production way, and you have money to spent or able to recover the cost from the work you done. Else, 3080/3080ti is the top for typical user/gamer. @Deathplan yeah haha it's funny coming back to this. It's just impossible to get the 3080 near MSRP so the 1200 price point seems much better (if you can get it). I was able to snag a Gigabyte 3080Ti Eagle at 1200 and it will come this week. I wouldn't normally spend 1200 and certainly not on a gigabyte, but comparatively this was the best deal I could actually get. Use case is pretty important. For 3D rendering / Octane / Redshift / Arnold GPU the 3080ti is an excellent value when you consider the added CUDA and RTX cores over the 3080. Essentially your getting all the speed of the 3090 which is blazing fast in GPU renderers for a lot less money. For many 3D artist 12GB is enough if scenes are well optimized. The number of CUDA and RTX cores are critically decisive for GPU based rendering. That said for gamers, which is probably more the target audience here I can see it’s not best value.

I will happily pay this price as long as it's retail that's still less than the scalpers want for a 3070.
3090: 1500$ 3080TI almost 3090 performance: 1200$
Why the outrage?
@@agrojester1156 This is not meant to come across as rude, but you are part of the problem
@@TheRealJohnHooper because people like to complain and cause a riot. I seen this garbage in the past. I remembered people were mad about the 980 Ti not as powerful as The Titan X and then all of a sudden because it performed as well for a cheaper price, everyone praised the 980 Ti like a God after they bought it..
Still sitting on my watercooled 1080 ti, I refused to give any money to scalpers, so I will sit here until we get a reasonable alternative.
@AstroCat my 1080 started to artifact a few months ago, still managed to sell it for $400, used that money to fund my new rx 6800 :D
@@arthurmixed3323 you are lucky, dude
Good luck.
Took me about a month of trying at every opportunity to get a 3070 FE at MSRP. Best Buy at least seems to be trying to combat botters and the fact that I'm a regular dude who got one for gaming is a testament to that. Having said that, 1080ti still a beast and you're smart for waiting to upgrade.
MSI 1080Ti + G12/X62 FTW... Holding on to my £... I've got the £ but no way I'm paying these stupid prices...
just picked up a tuf 3080ti for 900CND. Brand new in box too. Pretty good deal i think.
Love yr RUclips channel always honest, I am thinking of buying a £5000 pc from scan what do you think of them and the software they use 😀
