I have MS since 1996, I ride bikes since 2001, and I always was the slower in my group, doenst matter how hard you train, with a disability is difficult. Last december I changed my "normal' mtb for an ebike, man, I'm really happy. It gives me freedon, and power on climbs!!! Thats what it is for, to help people, with disabilities or not. This was a great invention for us with health problems
I ride for many things. To fight depression, to work out problems, for my health and to feed my soul exploring the world's beauty. I'm so glad he's recovered enough to do the same.
Paul i guarantee you are giving hope to millions of people and not only those who've suffered catastrophic accidents but to those who deal with depression and hopelessness. You've inspired me to get out there in the world and enjoy life.
I caught the documentary tonight. Power to you and all who suffer the life changes and then come out so strong and inspiring. If you ever get to Castle Rock, Colorado come ride with us. 105west trails and Ales. Beer’s on me.
Hey Paul, Just loved your Vid. I`m an incomplete Tetra C3/C4 subluaxtion suffered from a bad landing as a pro Skydive videographer back in 98. After 12 months determined recovery ( and yes returning to pro skydiving) I spent a few years struggling to ride my local hills here in Nelson New Zealand on my acoustic bikes and usually running out of puff and being dropped by my very supportive mates. Last year I then bought a Levo and everything changed. Now I can`t wait to get out there and ride. The uphill is now a rewarding thrill allowing me to charge the down hills with my mates. SOOOO Stoked ! And yes I get grumpy pricks going off about E-bikes on the trails while I`m riding. But I just chuckle to myself ...... If only they knew half the battle I had to face to get this far. When once upon a time on life support and intubated I wished I could just raise my hand too scratch my itchy morphine face without having to toe tap my buzzer for a nurse to come running and do it for me. Ha ha every day above ground is a good day eh ! Never go off at anyone, you never know their story. Cheers Steady : )
I'm now recovering of a 5 fold compression fracture. I broke T4-T5-T7-T8-T9. I got hit by a car while going home from work. I broke the car's front screen and bent the roof with my head... This is now about 5 months ago. I'm not paralized, but i can't stand for longer than 1 hour. Then I get a pain that disables me completley (I get out of breath and start shaking) and I have to lay down for about 1 hour just to recover. Next I can stand for 30 minutes, rest, and so on... I have done 1 ride on one of my mtb's(fully) but after 30minutes, I had to stop because of the pain. I'm hoping that I'll be able to ride a hardtail again, but i doubt it. Spinal injuries are something really weird. It's very painfull sometimes, but not at all at other times. Also very difficult to get back to the life you had before. Even when not paralized... It gets in your mind...
Just read about Paul in issue 5 of Bicycling magazine. His story resonates with me, especially when he says, "...I use the bike for a tool of freedom." I have damage to my lower lumbar and my hips and impact exercises are near-to impossible for me. I don't walk far without a cane either (except at home, where I'm more [stupidly?] lassiez faire about it, because there's always a chair nearby), so when I got back together with an old high school flame a year and a half ago and he got me riding again, I embraced it fully. I went from being barely able to get off the couch to riding the 150km MS Ride at the end of July. Riding has saved my life, my sanity and my health. It will keep me out of a wheelchair for many years to come. I am so impressed with Paul's drive and determination and I home to emulate it. Good on you, Paul, I sincerely hope to meet you someday.
Great video Paul. Thanks for sharing your story. If you are ever in Boulder, CO, lets go for an eMTB ride! I'll guide you through my local backwoods trails. ; ).
Paul, thanks for sharing your story I'm glad you found freedom with the eBike. When I bought mine in 2014 (Haibike) I realized the potential it had to be a game changer and your story proves it! Like you I've been eBike hassled by others. I try to educate them instead of arguing. If we all use proper trail etiquette we can all find our freedom!
I am a huge ebike advocate for many reasons. This video is one I often share to threads spouting ebike hate. How could someone watch this video and still hate ebikes? Impossible! I will keep spreading ebike wisdom and help try to make the world more open minded. Luckily my local trail systems are E-friendly now. :)
Very pleased to see your video, and that you can walk and ride again,I thought the worst to start with, but I really admire your determination and strength and courage to get riding again... Paul you are one in a million...!
"Respect everybody on the trails. Just be a good person and just let 'em do their thing - 'cause you never know what they're facing" .... (Paul Basagoitia) Wise words indeed... I've thought about this guy's progress on and off since the accident - the progress he's made is staggering. 👌
Great video. Sux that it happened but a blessing 🙏 to have another chance at living life. Some may have died right there from the concussion but you are here and happy and able to explore. Very good words about respecting everyone it's exactly how I've always felt and it's how we want to be treated and our family. Keep on riding life out 💪. I also have an Ebike and it allows me to ride with my injuries as well, while not as severe, I still wouldn't be mtn biking without it. It also give me a new inspiring sense of freedom after my last year of recovering stuck at home. Just have to play it safe from here too bc I've had a few close calls even on the new Ebike but it makes you smarter and stronger going through these things.
I just watched the show I am a Paraplegic and I walk I was shot 38 years ago and the built went through L1 and severed part of the spinal cord then when the built was pulled out I was told it also severed the cord some more I was told I would never walk because of the severe injury my Mom came to the hospital every day and put pure DMSO on the area where the injury is for 6 months straight and when I left the Hospital I walked out with crutches today I walk unassisted but not normal the DMSO was applied immediately after I was shot maybe 3 weeks later as you were probably told if it doesn't happen in the first two years it might not ever happen. She used 100% DMSO if you try it first make sure the person applying it wears rubber gloves and puts down a good layer of Aloe Vera oil to protect your skin from getting burned, then put a generous layer of DMSO down I used it for 6 months every day and I walked breaking all the rules of a spinal cord injury I know its been a while since your injury but you have nothing to lose and a lot to gain good luck hope you have full recovery if you want to contact me go to my RUclips channel Pat Man PDX
YOU ARE SO AMAZING!!! YES!!! WOW. You may not know me, but You are Exceptional, Past Great. You can Achieve Whatever You want. Please wrap Your Mind around how Strong of an Individual You are. Keep Pushing and KEEP THRIVING. 💪❤😅 🌍🚀
I bought Kona Bass off this dude when he was in great need of money for the injury And it was so sad to hear his story I actually liked Kona a lot so I got to know Paul Basagoitia who was sponsored by them When I transeferred the money for the ideal pristine condition Kona Bass it said I gave it to Paul and I was like Omg is that you
The mountain bike community is extremely pretentious. For some reason they think they are special. You’re riding a bicycle calm down. Paul is a legend! That guy who gave him a hard time will have to live with that guilt.
stoked you are getting mobile and walking a bit now. Look into water fasting and the plant paradox. miracles can happen- as you know, the body wants to heal. those two tips might help you big time. they helped me with two major issues and I am not alone.
Hey! I want to ask. Have You attempted strength training for Your feet and legs? Do You think that may help? Just a train of thought that maybe can "click something in Your Brain." Highest Regards... 💪❤😊 🌍🚀
Bring paul to red bull rampage 2019 comentator stage as a special guest.
Awesome idea, Yosa.
He deserve it
YESSSSSS!!!!!
That would make him sad
Yosa Tobing that would be epic! I’m pretty sure he actually did it in 2017 tho
