Yew is such a legendary wood. A good stave is pricey too! I bet this is a dream come true for you! Nicely done. I hope you get a Black Bear with it. I have never seen an arrow rest like that. I am currently making some AK Paper Birch arrows. My first one was so sweet I decided to make more! I cut out the lumber with my bandsaw then used a hand plane and sandpaper and occasionally an electric drill to get it perfectly round.
@@Benjamin.stevens Yeah they seem durable and plenty enough spine for heavier bows. 11/32" is about perfect for my 50lb recurve. It's somewhere between Doug Fir and Ash in terms of weight and strength.
Happy the algo brought me to your channel with the hardware store bow. Excited to see what else you upload, I loved archery as a Boy Scout and bow making could be an interesting hobby to try and pick up
I dream of yew! lol! In my opinion there's 2 woods that are equally amazing! If yew is the king, then Osage wood be the queen. Yew has insane growth ring density, but it's very expensive, hard to find in most countries, and in some countries you can't legally cut down a Yew tree. They are about a century old. Very slow regrowth time, but it's what gives them such great properties for bows. Osage is a little cheaper. And in some parts of the U.S., grow wild, and are considered evasive. So, you can literally just go out and chop 1 down for free. Osage has very clear growth rings, very easy to chase. But the downside(if you don't know how to work with it) is that Osage is extremely snakey wood, and requires lots of patience to tiller. If you get the chance to build with either of these woods, just go for it. They are such a luxury to work with!
Love your channel man. Nice end product here! I grew up shooting recurves and my favorite bow of all times is my grandfathers old bear kodiak. He was a short dude like 5'6'' so he has a really short draw length and I am 6'1'' so its tough for me to shoot it now as a full grown adult but that bow has taken dozens of Pennsylvania whitetail and blackbear. I used to fletch my own arrows but never really though about building a bow. I might have to give it a try now.
to solve the arrow splitting problem you can simply wrap just below the nock of your arrows with some kind of string and soak it with glue, that should help a lot.
Careful if you work with yew in the future, as the dust is known to be toxic. Good that you were outside and in the rain for this one. I'm new to your channel and love what you do!
I actually love watching your videos while I draw and when you hit me with that little tidbit of line confidence info, I felt a bit roasted. was not expecting that from a bushcraft bow video lol
Assuming its pacific yew since BC, I'm from the PNW myself as well and looking into bow making. Complete beginner and I'd like to use a wood species native to here, but I've heard a lot of ours are pretty hard to work for newer people to the craft. Hoping to start something soon, always been interested in archery!
I make river cane arrows and I always wrap the knock with sinew and then I coat it with tight bond 3 wood glue. Some of my practice arrows I've had for years and it works very well.
Not yet. I will eventually and I plan to teach bow building classes as well at the Kenai archery club. For now if you enter to win the bow in my Home Depot video you can join my email list to be updated when I do giveaways and auctions.
@@Benjamin.stevens Thanks, just entered. Now building classes would be great. I bet you’d get a lot of takers up here in the Fairbanks area as well if you ever have the opportunity.
Soon. I’ll only sell when they are top notch. I’d hate to somebody someone something that isn’t the best I can make. I just need a few more under my belt.
@@Benjamin.stevens I definitely appreciate that as a craftsman. Would be interested if you ever get to where you'd be willing to sell one do please let me know! I would love to have one!

Very cool to have a bow with history! The only manufactured bow I keep is the one my grandpa gave me that started this whole obsession.
Really Nice Bow 😎👍💯🇺🇲🔥🏹
That bow is a work of art❤

Give it a try! You either succeed or learn. Win win in my book.
Wrapping you nock with sinew or fishing line will prevent the shaft from splitting. Pretty bow!
Love to see some medium sized game hunting!
nice video bro!!! wood?
Nice Bow ,Bear time
Beautiful!
On the bamboo arrows with self knocks you have to wrap them with sinew or some kind of cordage to keep from splitting the shaft
Thanks I’ll try that. I still have 5 left.

congrats on the kid.
Would love to see more of the F150 camper! Btw, where was the pup riding in the car? In the back or next to the baby?
lol, on top.
@@Benjamin.stevens get outa here Ben
Beautiful bow, just wrap in front of those self nocks with sinew or thread and glue and you won’t split those arrows again
Wrap sinew around the arrow right below the knock and that will keep it from splitting
Chase the ring, crucial with the tension the sapwood is under, otherwise back it with something.
Nice work though.
Hi from Malaysia..i enjoy very much watching you making bows...i wonder if would or could make a take down turkish bow😅❤❤❤
That would be cool! I’ll look into it
Your work is fantastic. I live in interior Alaska. Do you have or store front or somewhere you sell these bows?

What made you get into making bows? Great vids man
I read “sign of the beaver” when I was 9.

@@Benjamin.stevens ok please keep me posted and thank you
"Since I've never worked with yew before..." Well I've never worked with you either. No need to knock it until yew try it.
Do you sell these? Would love to have a hand made bow! Your stuff looks killer and can't wait to see how well the future in bow making goes for you!

How do you source yew and about how much should I expect to pay for a piece that size?
Is there any good place to look for detailed guidance on overall bow making? Total noob. Love the videos!

Yeah pretty much. And watching videos and reading. Dan Santana bows on RUclips is a good resource.

What dimensions do you think I will need for a 70 lb Birch bow?
I’d go big to be safe. Maybe 68” long and 2” wide
@Benjamin.stevens Birch brakes on me but some guys say it's good stuff
I have 3 birch bows. I like it a lot but I always fire harden it. It’s like a softer hickory
Where do you get ur wood from
All over, this one is from a friend in BC.
@ I’m new and trying to get into it could you recommend some tools to use
athur morgan here
With me? 🥺❤
Can’t wait to start my bow making journey, plus American is cool the way you guys can just go hunting the uk is total bs
I'm guessing you know the toxicity of yew wood, that's why you're shaping it in the rain.
The bow is enchanted to inflict poison damage
Sir,can u make some arrows?
Not sure how you popped up in my feed but damn it I'm not enjoying your videos. Subbed.
