Current price of Model Y: $59K. Fully loaded ID.4 Pro S AWD: $50K - 7.5K Federal Tax Credit = $42.5K. HUGE price advantage for the ID.4. The OEM VW evse can be connected to 240v current if you make an adapter. VW throws in 3 years of free DC fast charging, and includes a retractable sunshade for the glass roof.
The VW is a great car and we appreciate that there is a difference in price and rebates right now but your equation is missing two components...delivery wait times and dealer markups. The local VW dealers don't have these cars and to order one to a specific spec is well into next year (just like Tesla). If they do have cars on the lot, the markups and mandatory options (floormats, coatings, etc.) get pretty annoying and expensive. That $7.5k federal credit (which you only receive if you owe more than $7.5k on your taxes right now) is consumed pretty quickly by dealer greed. This may all change if the proposed legislation passes and Tesla qualifies again. Not saying that there isn't a price difference and the sunshade isn't nice, but the buying experience (DTC vs dealer), actual out the door price, and charging network should be compared apples to apples. Three free years of charging is great but it stays with the owner's EA account (not the car) and you need to be visiting a lot of EA chargers to make it worth it. There weren't many EA chargers easily available on our road trip to the Berkshires so I'd gladly pay for Supercharging because even in Western MA there were V3 250kWh chargers open and working. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
We rented this car on Turo. The owner was super awesome and actually had a Model 3 Performance about to deliver as well. Turo is how we rented a couple Model 3s to try out autopilot, charging, and the cargo space. After those trips we knew the Model Y was going to be the right fit for us :)
It's great to see other vehicle options but we definitely love our Model Y. Renting the ID4 was a different experience than when we rented a Model 3 back in 2019. We got the Model 3 and thought we'd have to worry about a 400 mi road trip / getting stranded. That trip went so smoothly and we instantly loved the tech (and that was before a lot of new charging stations too). This trip was much more stressful than that first rental, but hopefully everything keeps improving. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Another great video. Thanks for doing this on the ID4. Although I think you guys do a great on your videos, you do use the word "actually" way too often. I counted 21 times in this video, and probably missed a few. Just an observation! Cheers!
Thanks so much! We noticed that while editing too. It's hard to remember what you said when filming each segment and we're working on continually improving :) Really appreciate all the support and let us know if there is anything you'd like to see in the future
Definitely better build quality than Tesla. I have a new model Y arriving in February. I wish it had many of the features that the Volkswagen has such as closable sunroof cover, and 3 years free charging. Check your video there is a problem midway.
There are definitely areas it's better than Tesla, but it still showed some faults. In our road trip video, we show that we received three electrical faults (lights, rear cameras, and light sensor faults). The free charging isn't all that great either because there was only one set of four chargers 40 miles from our destination in all of western MA where we road tripped. We spent 40 minutes at an Electrify America station only to receive 40kWh for $7. The free charging doesn't stay with the car like a Tesla account, but rather with the owner's EA account. The ID4's max charging speed is 125kWh so it's really best suited for home charging unless you want to spend long periods of time finding and charging at EA. Overall, we agree it's a very nice car and worth considering. Definitely recommending renting or test driving it first before buying. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Why complain about spending a few hundred bucks to add level2 charging at home when your saving over ten grand on the initial purchase. Cross country trips Can be done even with todays general public charging facilities. You can also use Teslas destination chargers with the adapter but not the super chargers.
Appreciate the feedback. This was specifically to test road tripping the VW over a long weekend. Around town the ID4 would be great and depending on where you live a level 2 charger isn't even necessary (we don't have a charger in our garage for our Model Y and although we live in downtown Boston). The difference is that in Western MA there weren't any EA chargers, yet there were plenty of superchargers. Regarding the price differential, everyone's mileage may vary. When we bought our Model Y it was less than $50k and we received a $2,500 rebate. Yes the VW still qualifies for the $7,500 still, but you only get the full value if you owe more than that in taxes at the end of the year. It could change to be a point of sale rebate in the new legislation, but if the proposed bill becomes law Tesla would qualify again.
Not a really honest review of Electrify America. Please re-rent the ID4 and go on a real road trip using EA exclusively. VW owns and built EA and has over 600 super chargers stations in the USA vs Tesla's 908 stations. Lets be fair, I agree with you the ID4 infotainment is not as user friendly as the Tesla. I'm sure it will get better. You can drive the ID4 almost anywhere a Tesla can go. Take a look on better route planner. I have to agree the tesla network are placed at better locations. EA chargers are at Walmart's for some reason. lol The EA network is growing weekly. It was a no brainer for me. The ID4 Pro $39K 260 miles of range, 3 years free charging on EA, plus $7500 tax credit. ($32400) VW quality and made in Germany.
There is a lot to like and dislike in this EV and I wish Tesla would adopt some of iD’s cool features. I find the white steering wheel very attractive and am tired of a black one especially with light interior. Display behind steering wheel is better than looking right on Tesla. Ambient lighting with a wide array of colors and shade are attractive too. But how do you charge at home with that useless 120v charger? I must spend over $500 for a 3rd party 240v J1772 charger. No frunk is awful. Did you find EA chargers reliable on your road trip? Others reported EA failure rate is high and repair time many weeks.
Definitely a lot of areas that Tesla could take notes. We used Electrify America once and it did work, although it took 40 minutes to receive 40kWh for $7. Even though the owner has free charging for 3 years through VW, it doesn't stay with the car but rather the owner's EA account. As for charging, there must be other adapters for when on the road but odd the standard cord doesn't allow you to switch the plugs (believe the Mustang Mach E charger does). It is odd that 3rd party J1772 chargers are more expensive than Tesla wall connectors at $600+ (Juicebox, Chargepoint, Clippercreek, etc.) Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
I guess it depends on how they drove the ID4, cuz I got one and I get the 4.3 efficiency. Also on paper the ID4 is to get 250mile at 100 and I’m getting 313.
This is ridiculous if you are comparing to a Model Y…price points and market targeting are completely different. If VW got rid of the Haptic controls thee ID.4 would be great. Do either of you have any Automotive design or Engineering experience?
Not necessarily true. The ID4 is a $40k+ car. When we bought our long range Model Y it was less than $50k and we received a $2,500 rebate. The standard range MY was $40k when they made that version. Yes, the ID4 still qualifies for the $7,500 but you only get the full value if you owe more than that in taxes at the end of the year. That may all change if the new legislation is passed. Both cars have their pros and cons, but it's not like we're comparing the ID4 to a Taycan which would easily be double
My wife has an ID4 and just loves it. My MYP is due to be delivered in January, can't wait. Thanks for all the great videos.......

Don’t forget to throw in those dealer mandatory add-ons and/or markups.

Don't forget that ID4 1st Addition and PRO S come with massaging front row seats.
Why do we compare the ID.4 with the Y? They are not in the same cost bracket
There is also EVgo and Chargepoint DC fast chargers, not just EA. Use A better route planner to figure out your charging needs.
I am a Korean. I came because I was curious about Id4.Thank you for the video. I'll come often. You're pretty.
2:46 its a phyical door handle if the car is completly dead. You just need to pull it harder.
JQ, how did you get the iD for 3 day road trip? Turo or equivalent rental?
We rented this car on Turo. The owner was super awesome and actually had a Model 3 Performance about to deliver as well. Turo is how we rented a couple Model 3s to try out autopilot, charging, and the cargo space. After those trips we knew the Model Y was going to be the right fit for us :)
Frunk…nope. Intuitive climate controls….nope. Convenient fuelling…nope. Sadness and regret…standard features. Thanks for another great video.,

And also blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alerts.

why get a keyfob for a Tesla if you love keyless entry lol
2.9 mile per KWH is very disappointing low efficiency number. Model Y runs 4.3. With 2.9, I would rather drive a hybrid vehicle.
