There are documentaries showing the footage filmed aboard the Sewol. It's truly heartbreaking. They had hours and hours to rescue those kids before the ferry sank but nothing was done due to the ineptitude of the coastguards and corrupt officials. The parents literally stood in horror and watched the officials abandon their still living kids as the ship sank beneath the water. As a parent I cannot imagine the damage and pain those parents and relatives went through. It's why still to this day I cannot listen to Spring Day without shedding a tear or remembering the kids and parents suffering.

There's one more thing about the 2nd explanation (Sewol Ferry) : in the laundry room scene, look at the clock. It shows around 9:30 AM. The ferry began sinking around that time. I really doubt that this is just coincidence. Personally, i think the 2nd theory is what they actually wanted to show with the MV specifically. It just fits too perfectly to the story. One another important thing : the government covering up the accident was not limited to just ignoring it/not talking about it. People were getting blackmailed because of giving too much attention to it. Imagine a huge group like BTS talking about it openly - they couldn't, so i think that MV was the only way to sneak in the message without saying it out loud. That's what i think about it and it makes the most sense to me.

I thought same thing. That this is their time to showcase them, their music, their message and they chose this song 3 years after release. I am impressed that they are using this time to express this music. They know people will research it and it helps it not be forgotten. Imo. Edit: I was not agreeing of the graduation concept but the way BTS was using their current airtime and platform to possibly honor those who died in tragedy. I personally have always thought song inspired possible by tragedy but it is an ode that can be used to help all that are grieving or experiencing loss. Hence why BTS does not say it is a direct response. It is about grieving at the end of the day.

You are beginning to understand why there is a Harvard Business School paper on BTS and BigHit Entertainment, and why international conferences are being held where scholars around the world talk about BTS and Army.
Even pre-debut the members were already putting out songs that were socially conscious, like Vote or Just Shut Up, School of Tears (about bullying), and 518-062 (Gwangju uprising/ democratic movement).
They just cover a wide spectrum of topics in their songs -- not everything is serious, but they all speak to various aspects of the universal human experience.
You also now see why Army is a very engaged fandom. BTS don't spoon-feed us their song meanings but they plant a lot of easter eggs which makes it fun for us to uncover and analyze.

Actually suga's rap part was not about any theory. He said that while everyone was singing about something (they want us to guess it), he sang about his friend. (He said this after his mixtape D-2 released in may, 2020 so the explanation video came out before he said this. And in the mixtape, he told the whole story about his friend in the song 'dear my friend'.) He was one of suga's best friends, but he went prison for drug (it is ilegal in Korea). Because he was best friend, suga feels sad and mad of him but still cannot forget.
+There are many points that matches with sewol ferry in the choreography too, such as starting with a choreography which looks like drowning ferry. ruclips.net/video/Z9GvAYXfTVg/видео.html I hope you see this.

    • @YJ-fx5tb
      @YJ-fx5tb 4 года назад +4

@@luBfink there are many clues that can prove that rm's part was about it. firstly, in the lyrics, there is part of 'even i am seeing your picture, i still miss you'. in this lyrics, if it was used to say about a person, 'you' would be used in singular form which is '너'. but here, it is used as '너희' and this word is plural form. we could tell that it is talking about not one person. also, rm once did interview about this tragedy. he said 'We are cautious, but we also had a lot of thoughts about the Ferry Sewol accident as a part of citizen. I wanted to take some responsibility and deliver a message.' and yellow ribbon is well known representitive of the tragedy in korea. i could tell that everyone, even 10 aged children will know the meaning of them. it was huge thing. every koreans felt angry about the government, espacially after they found out that president was getting a shot of filler when it happened. this anger made people one, and finally brought the president resign. i don't think they put the yellow ribbon without any meaning of the tragedy. because it has so huge meaning to korean. actually, this song was not released the same time when the thing happened. it was released after 3 years, after this tragedy and every facts came out and the president came down.

@@YJ-fx5tb Namjoon said himself in a vlive that he wrote Spring Day as a thought of missing friends he hadn’t seen in a long time. The song itself was intended for people who miss loved ones. When they were on tour far away, and were busy with work, those were the feelings they felt.
The music video, however, was made with references to the tragedy in mind, and so the song took on that same meaning. People keep trying to take away that meaning because they always want the song to only be about the sewol tragedy, but that isn’t right and it isn’t truthful. It has been proven already that it’s not, through even Yoongi’s verse from My Dear Friend. The song can honestly mean what ever you want it to mean, and all meanings apply, they are all valid.

@@aviewer9516 ruclips.net/video/MkyFbcnIQV4/видео.html you can watch this student’s video during the tragedy, sadly the student who recorded this didn’t make it till the end... it’s all the captain’s fault as he evacuated himself with some other crews leaving the passengers unattended. they asked the students to stay in their cabin while they left and the ferry was already half sunk, only some students who didnt follow the instructions survive by breaking through the window without a life jackets on because they noticed the situation has gone really terrible, to point this out, some official lifeguards didnt really took this seriously, they came to help the students while slacking off for hours, some family row their boat to the sinking ferry to force and begging them to do their jobs, some fishermen who saw this happening were trying to save the passengers as much as they could while swimming inside the ferry cabins, i have my friend who happened to be in the ferry and she survived and told me about this, the youngest survivor at that time is a little girl who lost her parents and older brother, yes this is a terrific tragedy and that’s really based on social class in s. The (now impeached and imprisoned) president at the time, was widely criticized with the way she handled this tragedy. She didn't arrive at the scene until 5:15 pm and has never once answered why she took so long, which angered many Koreans. She was later impeached and imprisoned due to her corruption and the way she handled this tragedy. I was in Korea at the time and there were thousands of people standing in the main square of Seoul (close to the Blue House) for days, peacefully protesting against the president.
BTS cannot come out and say things that are overtly political because they would be faced with a lot of backlash from the general public and possibly the government. So we don't know 100% if the theories about the Sewol Ferry are true, but they are widely accepted theories. I remember seeing a comment from one of the parents - "Without letting anybody know, BTS quietly visited our kids through their song and video, sending their message that they are NOT forgotten. Yae Eun would've liked it a lot too..."
Spring Day is called the queen because whenever a new album/song is released, we all make playlists to stream. The Korean armys often include a few songs as the "control" to gauge the metrics of how well we're streaming. Often Spring Day is used as one of those control songs. So as the new songs rise, Spring Day comes up too. Funnily enough, there was one comeback, K-army realized that there were too many other songs to add in the playlist, so they decided to let Spring Day go. People were saying goodbyes and everything. However! As we were streaming, the next thing we know, Spring Day was quickly rising on the charts again. Every time a new song comes out, you can be sure that Queen Spring Day will also rise along with it. (Sorry for the essay) I'll have a second comment in a moment about race.

Its really haunting the sinking of the Sewol Ferry especially because it was children who died, theres videos of the victims where they were talking about how they didn't want to die, they didn't even finish their favourite shows yet, they wanted their (parents), how they were saying to the captain (even though he couldnt hear them, "I die because of you.") a bunch of HS students.... facing their death, and when the children were brought back up by the divers, their dead faces were frozen with fear holding onto each other, their fingers were broken trying to get out, they didn't have to die. They all had life jackets on, but they drowned because they were told to stay behind, they could've been alive. 300+ children died + the teachers, the Vice Principal of the school couldn't take the agony of what happened and he killed himself a few days later. The crew members, the captain, etc were all charged with murder, I'm pretty sure the captain committed sucide a year later in the jail. I wouldn't recommend go looking for the videos but if you really want to, at least I needed to see these people... literally children for some reason, they were real, they had feelings, families, etc and they didn't deserve this.

BTS could not specifically and openly said that Spring Day was related to the Sewol Ferry tragedy but we all could see that there were many metaphors that referred to this tragedy. It involved the government, conglomerate firms and politics so BTS could only pay tributes to the victims through this song or else they would be blacklisted by the Government. They had donated anonymously to the victims’ families till the media found out and reported about it.
Spring Day can also relate to anyone who has missed their friends/loved ones who may have left or passed away and providing comfort.

So, lots of thoughts... At it's heart, Spring Day is about grieving for missing loved ones, no matter how they were lost--death, a breakup, drifting apart, or separation due to uncontrollable circumstances. As for the music video, there are so many layers to the visuals. I think that probably all 3 of the explanation/theory videos have pieces of the "truth." Suga wrote the lyrics for his own verse, but from interviews they've given, it appears that RM wrote most of the other lyrics to the song. However, he is a very thoughtful person, and most likely wrote it with not only his own losses in mind, but also the losses his country was going through (Sewol Ferry tragedy, government corruption trials), and the losses the other BTS members experienced. They may be famous artists, but they are also normal young men--they have experienced deaths in their families, they've lost friends and fellow entertainers to suicide, and they've gone through relationship breakups. In one of the songs on his recent May 2020 D-2 mixtape, Suga even echoes his lyrics from Spring Day when he talks about one of his closest childhood friends that he lost to drug addiction/prison.
South Korea is an oppressive society in many ways. There is a lot of pressure on kids, teens, and young adults to conform to parental and societal expectations. There was (and probably still is) a lot of government corruption. In fact, the president in charge of the nation during the Sewol Ferry disaster was impeached, tried, found guilty, and imprisoned on charges of corruption. (Not directly due to the ferry tragedy--it was just one instance of a situation that was gravely mishandled.)
Thanks for your reactions! (Oh, and the Sewol Ferry tragedy was reported in the USA in the days and weeks immediately following the accident, but I don't remember much coverage of the aftermath.)

The song is not the Queen of BTS songs, but it is the Queen of the charts. Since it's release, it has never left the charts in the region of South Korea. It also majorly climbs the charts every year around the anniversary of the tragedy. If you look into the disaster, you will find that not all of the victims were students, but the majority of them were. High school students all from the same school, on a field trip. The very first song that BTS released is called "No More Dream" and it's call for youth to find and follow their on dreams, rather than the dreams that their parents have for them. The second song was kind of an introduction to the members, called "We Are Bulletproof P2", and the third single released was "N.O" "N.O" is about the rigid school system and protests how they're expected to study from early in the morning until late at night and trample on their own friends to get better grades. They debuted June 13, 2013 and all three songs were released in 2013 so they released 3 singles in their first 6 months and 2 of the 3 were protest songs. BTS has ALWAYS taken chances and spoken out on social injustice. They also fight for inclusivity and against "gender norms". They've been known to wear skirts, they'll change the lyrics of a song when they do a remix to make it gender neutral and when Jimin was putting on different outfits during their online concert last month, he took the clothes off of a female mannequin. You should listen to some of their speeches, like RM's speech to the UN in 2018, the speech all of them gave here on RUclips for the class of 2020 graduation, and the UN speech that all of them gave this year, in September. They're damn good with words and not just with lyrics.

The first thing about the lyrics: Pdogg said that "they originally planned to make an exciting and light song, but because of the social environment of the time, they decided to make a song that could comfort people." (sewol tragedy). The second thing was that the lyrics are the story of Suga and RM. it can be about the friendship of the two or about the friendships they already had, such as a friend of Suga who was in prison, which he talked about on his album D2.

Thank you for taking the time to look in to this more and understand. I liked the first explained up to about 3/4 through the Omela's explanation.... then it became more general and did not address the tragedy, which I personally firmly believe it absolutely tied to the MV. There are those who say that it doesn't because of how much later RM wrote the song after the actual tragedy, but if you look at the last explained, you will see that at the time he said he wrote it sitting in the park, this was the peak of the testimony of the officials who were being impeached/fired and arrested, so it was VERY timely.... the society as a whole has been criticized for class warfare and dismissal and undervaluing of the youth and elderly and others but the corruption in this instance was so insanely horrible. There are a lot of survivors and families who have said this song and MV has given them such great comfort, which is one reason why it has never dropped of the charts in SK since it came out. I hope you take a moment to watch a live performance of this song as the choreography is so beautiful. Thank you again. Love your energy and willingness to dip your toes (or bottom of your heal lol) in to the rabbit hole waters. :-)
EDIT: One last thought, you are right, their music isn't JUST about them.... that isn't to say it isn't about them at all, as I believe it is their way of telling their own story as well as giving comfort to the world, but they truly do try to find ways to give, and they have a very deep sense of responsibility they have based on the size and visibility of their platform - this is just one reason why I love them so much - MOST artists these days, especially in the US don't think they have this responsibility, or they only see it as "look at how much influence I have cause I am so great" without really recognizing the significance and weight of the responsibility they truly hold.... they are more worried about the fame and notoriety and not about doing good in the world.... BTS are not perfect as they are only human, but they take this opportunity in this moment in their lives so seriously that anyone who hates on them, makes up lies, belittles them, or dismisses them either truly do not get them or are just plain messed up people. As I have often said, everyone doesn't have to love them or even like their music, but they should at least treat the guys with some basic level of respect - while they are only in their 20's, they have EARNED that respect and do so every day by walking the walk and not just talking the talk.

They almost never confirm or deny theories. Only lately we get some confirmation with their bangtan universe stories (fiction). They have multiple times mentioned they follow the theories fan posts. Sometimes fan take it further than they initially thought. Aka theories. They enjoy reading the theories :)
Altho there are no official nods to the theories there are comments you can put together
According to Namjoon the song was initially about missing your friends. He wrote it thinking about his band mate Yoongi. Yoongi un turn wrote about his friend who went to jail. This the complicated emotions of missing someone and the anger towards that emotion and the person. Missing someone is a complicated set of emotions. They donated to the cause of sewol ferry. Also just today the producer mentioned they focused on the national sentiment of the time.
The video itself seems to be a homage to the sewol ferry accident. Again. Songs take long to write and produce but mv are usually shot in a few days after the song is made. The mv video was most likely made with the purpose of a homage even if the initial backstory of the song is about missing friends. At the end of the day. The feeling of missing the lost friends. The anger and frustration are all the same. We can all relate. Even more while this whole incident happened. It heavily marked everyone in Korea

    • @rjbirmingham
      @rjbirmingham 3 года назад

I totally agree - BTS has more than once had a song that is only losely connected to the MV. A song about loss and missing some would be the right song to communicate about a specific loss. The reason this song/MV is so good is that a person can apply it to their own loss, whether it be a person they knew or a larger event. While to truely understand the MV (but not the song) you need to know about Korea's history, I kept thinking about the Oklahoma City Bombing when I first watch this. I love how it is specific but also not specific.

I think the good thing about it is that BTS never specified, so the meaning of it doesn’t have to be one or another, it can be both

  • @athelas5305

I agree--I think you watched these in the best order. And I think Spring Day contains all of these things. It reminds me of Tolkien. He hated Allegory, which he considered the author forcing you to take one certain meaning from a story. He preferred Applicability which allows the reader to make the connections. The best art is applicable to things that haven't even happened yet. And I think Spring Day does that. In my head I make a lot of connections with how people are treated in the US based on wealth, race, gender, etc.
One thing to remember is BTS is not just these 7 men. It's a collaboration with other songwriters, producers, directors, stylists, etc. I would expect Bang PD (head of Big Hit) and Lumpens (Director) were both heavily influential in all of this imagery, meaning, etc.
The only students who survived were the ones who disobeyed. I think this might be a good time for you to watch either/both (edit) N.O. (students rebelling against the rigid Korean school system) & NOT TODAY which features words from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr on protesting. This song kept me going the last few months.
When Spring Day comes up on TIDAL when I have shuffle on I start tearing up at the first note. Every time.
And I definitely heard of the Sewol Ferry tragedy, but I also know it's easy to miss things from halfway around the world depending on how your life is going at that time. I basically have no memory of anything happening in the world for the 2 years I was getting my first MA.
Finally, not one of the videos mentioned something especially meaningful to me. Suga's verse is from one of his solo songs in which it is clear he is talking about a friend who got into drugs, went to jail, and when he got out he wanted Suga to do drugs with him so Suga had to cut himself off. When you know that the words hit really hard since I think we have all had to do that at some point in our lives. Lyrics: doolsetbangtan.wordpress.com/2020/05/22/dear-my-friend-feat-jw-of-nell/
Sorry this is so long, but I've thought of this song a lot and probably listen to it at least once a day. Thank you for your very thoughtful reaction. 💜

First of all I want to thank you for taking time out of your life to watch all these videos in pt. 1 & pt. 2 and look closely at the meaning and analysis of spring day.
There is so much I want to say I don't even know where to begin, so I'm just going to write and hope it all makes sense.
    - Art is art, it's supposed to make you feel something whatever it is and no matter how you interpret it, it's all valid. That's how I feel about Spring Day, you can take it as missing a friend, relative, lover who you parted ways with or who you lost and is no longer with us or about the grief and heartbreak of all those who lost their loved ones in a disaster that could've been handled in a better way. All of them are true and valid. This is exactly why BTS never say explicitly 1 meaning to a song because they want us to make our own interpretation and relate to it how we want.
    - You asked about Suga's rap lyrics, I interpreted it as him taking the anger stage of grief which he lashes out and says I hate you because you left me even though truthfully I don't hate you and can't erase you from my memory. He also mentioned that he wrote it about a close friend who is no longer a friend (he talks more about that same friend in his most recent mixtape in the song Dear My Friend).
    - For how involved they are in the song, they're pretty hands-on (some more than others). Usually how their creative process goes is: they discuss the themes they want to include in an album, start sending in melodies, lyrics, etc to their producers and from there it's all about taking the ones that fit best and giving pointers to adjust around it. Suga once referred to their work as "a year round song camp". For the video, they also talk with the creative director on what they want to portray in it, key ideas and trust them to take it from there but they can also ask for things to be changed or modified while filming.
    - As you've seen, the political situation in Korea wasn't good at all at that time. The whole tragedy linked back to her corruption and power abuse along with many other cases that were uncovered which led to her impeachment. The current president is much more loved and respected by the people as far as I know (I'm not korean, nor have ever been there but I read a lot about the country even before I ever knew BTS).
    - Back to BTS & the depth of their songs, I won't say that every single song has an equally rich/heavy backstory but non of them can be interpreted on a surface level (except for dynamite since they didn't write it themselves lol). You'll rarely find a song that talks about romantic love only or with very straightforward lyrics, it's always double and triple layers of meaning.
    - I also want to correct a misunderstanding that in Korea kids are not dismissed or suppressed, this incident specifically and how the crew + lifeguards acted was all for cover up of the main corruption and illegal acts relating to that ferry. In general the younger korean generation is less rigid than the older generation which were raised in a very hierarchical society. Also, as far as I know, they don't treat foreigners bad, but they do have some "non inclusive" undertones in some places.
Woh that was a long one. Please ignore any typos or grammar mistakes, English is not my 1st language.

The first video is pretty much this person's interpretation, which is why a lot of ARMY don't like it because a lot is missing from even being mentioned. Especially the Sewol Ferry incident which BTS was integral in helping bring to light. The second video is what a lot of people that speak English use, but the 3rd video is the most comprehensive. You guys did an amazing job with this reaction. Don't worry about length, what you're doing to learn about the guys and ARMY (to become full ARMY, You're definitely Baby ARMY) is to be respected and appreciated. Gentlemen, this was well worth the effort and time you put into it. You are truly educators in the best sense, thank you. This profound South Korean national tragedy, that the mv addresses, brought tears the world over. BTS and Big Hit adroitly walked a fine line to contribute such a moving and artistic statement joining other works Korean artists created about the Sewol Ferry disaster. It reflects their personal courage and commitment as individuals and artists. The song, Spring Day, remains to this day beloved in South Korea.
The level of execution and content in BTS's work is of the highest order. They are surrounded by producers, choreographers, designers, stylists, as well as those they contract, who are all superb. The creative thinking, amazing attention to detail, mission, and the big picture in their work is astounding. It shows that the founder Bang Si-Hyuk's degree in aesthetics is no joke. He manages his ship with great emotional clarity and he cherishes these talented young men.
In the end, the mv is commenting on the deficiencies and corruption of late stage capitalism the world over. It takes world-wide issues and make them as specific as loss and the human heart. This is how we heal. The world is birthing with pain and difficulty a new era in human society. We pray it will be built on humanistic models valuing acceptance and promoting responsible action for the common good. BTS is creating within a difficult cultural and economic framework. Almost miraculously, they manage to operate and stay grounded with a maturity and honesty beyond their years. They have grown wealthy from their artistry, but they have also stayed true to it because of their communal relationship with their fans and fidelity to each other. One day they will look back on this work, to their youth, talent, and boyhood beauty. May they see an immense body of work well done and our continued appreciation of it as our gift to them.

I really appreciate your willingness to go through all three explanations. The last one was so meticulously covered, it would be pretty difficult to deny the mv's correlation to the Sewol ferry tragedy, the Snowpiercer and Omelas. Just so you know, RM and Suga wrote the lyrics. RM said it was written about missing friends and that they hoped the song would comfort many people. We learnt that Suga's verse was regarding a friendship that he lost. He wrote an entire song in his 2020 mixtape about their story. It's called Dear My Friend. But that story is the reason behind the hurt and resentment in his verse.
One thing you'll notice about BTS' rap line is, they often approach the theme of the song from different perspectives. So they kind of show you what they individually think and they do it so brilliantly that the song meshes cohesively and forms a story with multiple narrators in a sense. The videos are not a direct representation of the lyrics, but a representation of their themes. So you can often explore multiple layers to the lyrics itself that convey worlds of meaning apart from the layers to the music video. The storytelling extends to even their choreographies. It's incredible.
As for what you were saying about S. Korea's oppressive govt, I think the events that followed the Sewol tragedy are a testament to the strength of the people and what you can do with solidarity. That president and that govt. was rife with corruption, but their democracy worked. The people protested and ultimately, the president was impeached. And when she got impeached, she was imprisoned. This victory of the people is honestly something that I wish would have happened in America of late too. I was baffled that Trump was impeached, but not removed, and he was allowed to run for President again. It makes no sense to me. For many months I saw Americans argue that Korea's covid response only worked bcoz the govt is authoritarian and invades privacy. It was extremely ironic to me coz not only did they get the North and South mixed up, but the imprisonment of that president was proof that Korea's democracy worked better than America's today. I sincerely hope that things will change for the better across the world soon. All the intense focus of divisiveness and nationalism is taking numerous steps backwards when we should be more inclusive and accepting than ever. These tragedies strewn across time are crucial to remember because we risk repeating the mistakes of the past if we forget. We must be able to draw parallels from the past so we do not leave the fate of millions in the hands of monsters.
Damn, this got a lot longer than I planned. Thank you again for your effort. Hope you enjoy diving into the depths of BTS' oeuvre.. It's a fascinating dive for a literature major like me. They've really broadened my horizon.

I watched the movie "in the absence" thanks to the Oscar nomination for documentary. It is about the Sewol Ferry tragedy. It was really shocking to me. I didn't make the connection to bts. I knew the song earlier. I think i didn't like the song that much at first, wasn't really my sound. Later on, when i knew it was about loss (mainly from lyrics and "gossips") i could place it, and i went on to like it as an emotional song to listen. I found out about the deeper meaning of the Spring Day mv only recently. I cried listening to the explanation. I am a fan of bts for more than two years and the amount of deepth they have to everything is just beyond imagination. Knowing about the Spring Day by now isn't really adding to my respect for them, because it was so high before. They talk about so many things personal and significant to everyone not only in theirs songs, but in documentaries and even shows. I was as sceptic as propably everyone at the beginning, i didn't really anticipate becoming a proud boyband fan, but BTS and bighit just change the game. Now i regret not looking into them when i first started to hear about them. Cheers to everyone who became a fan, we are really lucky. :) Sorry for my bad english. I have learned for a long time now, but rarely with someone to correct me.

I always like to mention that BTS has never acknowledged nor denied that Spring Day video is about the Sewol Ferry tragedy. Namjoon did a VLive where he mentioned the seeds of writing the lyrics/song and said the idea was just seeing a leaf fall from a tree.
I am not saying the song is or isn't or the video is or isn't about the ferry tragedy but ultimately we don't know for certain.
I know in Korea this song is loved be young and old a like and I have heard many Koreans speak that this song is a very healing and comforting song for young, old, male, female , BTS fans and non fans.

As far as creative control, this song was written by RM (except for Suga’s rap verse, which he wrote himself.) And you can see videos on RUclips of BTS sitting around a table brainstorming ideas for their videos. So although they have a professional director I think a lot of the content comes from the group. The movie Snowpiercer is currently on Netflix in the US. Next time you are ready for a BTS video that requires an explanation video or two to fully understand the meaning: Blood, Sweat, and Tears. In Korea, the language is based off what's called honorifics. It is a highly hierarchical culture. Elders are given the utmost respect, and there are different words to refer to & address a person who is older than you vs. younger than you. There is a beauty to it, but also a dark side when this is used to abuse power as in the ferry tragedy.
