    Huge fan of the filtering, should 100% be allowed worldwide for stopped traffic and doing it within clear open lanes and at speeds less than 15mph. If a lane stops on the highway you should be able to move out the lane and slowly move up and avoid the rear ending possibility.
    But honestly not fully for splitting for the reasons laid out. And the fact that many riders will push the legal boundaries riding well above what's allowed and what is safe.
    If what is allowed can't be somewhat predictable for someone focusing on driving and watching ahead you shouldn't be allowed to do it. To completely move between traffic and completely surprise drivers who would have no clue you are coming up is simply not safe for anyone.

      @adam_bh that's incorrect it's still unsafe. Besides, you're not in a lane where drivers are looking. Plus, weaving in and out of traffic is unsafe regardless. Then you have the issue of cutting off drivers. Lanesplitting is for immature, childish riders. Then again, so are crotch rockets who are the main reason motorcycle wreaks happen.

    I live in Colorado. I’ve been on the fence at the thought of conducting lane splitting/filtering for me, personally. I’d never done it before, and it remained a mystery for me.
    Currently, I’m in Southern California on vacation. My wife and I rode out here from Colorado to visit family. I ride a very large motorcycle. JUST TODAY I performed my first lane splitting. We were on I-15 when traffic came to a glacial crawl, and the temperature was 99°F. I just had to keep moving.
    Mystery busted!
    It was way easier than I’d anticipated. We slipped through traffic effortlessly. What also helped was other drivers. I was impressed with the number of drivers who obviously made an effort to move over to allow more room to let me pass. This, alone, leads me to believe that, if lane splitting is ever legalized in Colorado, there should be an extensive campaign to inform drivers to make room for motorcycles.

  • @JasonYergin
    @JasonYergin Год назад +2

    There are no downsides to filtering. By that I mean slowly/safely moving to the front of the line when there's enough room and time to do so. Lane splitting while moving presents other challenges, mainly cagers not being adamantly closed-minded, stubborn, and petty about it. And of course that shouldn't be done at 70 mph.
    The unchangeable fact is that better traffic flow makes the drive better for everybody, and that's just what lane splitting and filtering is all about.

      There’s no reason you can’t filter or split. It’s the only thing we do right here in CA. You jackwagons legalized weed before filtering which has data to prove it’s WAY safer than not. It makes lives better for cars as well by alleviating traffic. The only people who don’t want splitting are egotistical that want you to wait in line with them.

    I think a great way to educate and inform the public needs to be something that can inform us all - everyone with a license to operate a vehicle - at the same time in the same platform. An idea of that would be for each state to require a licensee to retake the written road test every time we have to renew our license. This way every person who operates a vehicle - cage or 2 wheels - is constantly having their knowledge refreshed plus learning new laws that have been passed. And this way as a society and state/country culture, there's always a large group of people on a daily basis being given/reminded of information.

    Lane splitting is the key for city riding. I used to commute on motorcycle when I lived in Europe for 10+ years. I was able to reach my office quickly and very precisely timewise regardless of current traffic and not added any extra space to the line of cars. Then relocated to the US and abandoned riding on tarmac whatsoever because there is no point to do so: sitting in traffic is much better in air-conditioned cage with music and comfort. Started riding dirt but added my truck into endless traffic pile. That's the result of this stupid "no lane splitting" law.

    I split my time between Arizona, which allows filtering, and Washington, which doesn't, and it drives me crazy that I can't filter in Washington. I've only seen one negative reaction - a guy in a POS Tahoe that apparently thought I was challenging his manhood - and I just let him go ahead. On the flip side, I've seen multiple people proactively make space for me to move up. I wear high viz gear, don't go blasting through, and have a stock exhaust, and really don't think many people mind my respectful filter to the front.

    The trouble with any political position, there are those who believe something, and there are those who have knowledge. Belief and knowledge are very different.
    There are people who believe something without any factual basis for that belief, and they will NEVER CHANGE THEIR BELIEF, no matter what. So don't argue with them.
    There are those people who need information, facts, evidence, logic, and understanding on the issues. These people are potential allies in improving transportation, safety, congestion issues, and so on.

    Mirrors. The whole lane splitting/filtering safety thing comes down to car mirrors. People (assuming they use their mirrors) will see you better if you are approaching from behind rather than from the side. Even if your mirrors are maladjusted so that half the reflection is taken up by the cool flames going down the side of your car, you are still more likely to see a motorcyclist coming up from directly beside you. @TFLbike you could do a video demonstrating this in your parking lot or at the ranch with a couple cars/trucks and one of your bikes.

    The only issue that I see is that places that do not allow it now trying to implement most people aren’t used to it and it will cause more chaos. I think they should make a motorcycle specific lane.

      I like the idea of a motorcycle lane a lot. Even just allowing motorcycles to use a bicycle lane, like they do in some parts of Honolulu, HI, can go a really long way to easing traffic congestion. I think filtering should be legal everywhere, and lane splitting like they do in Cali (only at certain speeds and not more than 10 mph faster) both should be done with caution. Like Zack Courts always does on Daily Rider, with discretion, when it makes sense, not dangerously or in a hurry, and in a peaceful manner with the other motorists.

    This would be okay if the people in cages were okay with bikes but I know. And I've always felt that this can be very bad. Since the pandemic people seem to have gotten crazier they want to drive faster the police don't pull people over for speeding.
    It's a good idea because the amount of traffic and I've always said if there were if it were 10% or more people that would ride motorcycles the roads would be so uninstructed so less crowded it would be a real plus if a quarter of the people would get on a motorcycle.. instead of being behind the wheel in a cage it would be a real.. people think they own the road in a cage it's just dangerous to me ..... Too much human attitude...

    I’m a rider and I never look for bikes lane splitting because they’ve already passed me by the time I see them! I focus on driving ahead of me. Riders can fend for themselves if they’re going to place themselves into unnecessary danger. It’s a very stupid thing to do and I’ve seen dozens of riders go down lane splitting here in CA! As a rider it definitely isn’t safer because people don’t focus on their side mirrors and see me in a traffic jam because they’re focused forward. Oh BTW you CAN lane split in AZ under certain circumstances.

    Lane splitting needs to be outlawed everywhere. It's dangerous and causes so many accidents. Then these crotch rockets just speed off. People that lane split always blame the vehicles for the wreaks that the rider causes. Those that lane split deserve jail time or worse. There's no logical need to lane split.

    • @desmo200
      @desmo200 Год назад +3

      Respectfully, you are incorrect. The biggest danger to bikers is being a sitting duck in traffic, the logic is that we would be less likely to be trapped in a lane to be rear ended. Also it reduces traffic for everyone. The video even states that less than 1% of accidents are related to lane splitting & filtering.

    • @bmoturtleco
      @bmoturtleco Год назад

      @desmo200 I'm simply stating facts based on logic and evidence. The false idea that's it's safer is a farce. It puts riders and drivers in more danger. Plus, if you're sitting at a light or behind a car and you are paying attention, then you can maneuver out of the way if needed. No one would fault a rider for avoiding an accident. But the riders that are lane splitting going down the highway are not avoiding danger they are causing it. The absurdly low number attributed to riders at fault is massively incorrect. To see this childish behavior on the roadways, it's obvious they don't care about safety. Lane splitting is not necessary, nor is it safe. Riders often fly by drivers, causing wreaks. Just stay in your lane and pass with care when it's safe to do so.

    • @desmo200
      @desmo200 Год назад +1

      @bmoturtleco I believe that you are overly inflating the statistical minority of the types of riders and accidents that they are causing or involved in. We will never get to 100% safe, but if one method is safer my any margin, logically we should go that way. Maybe splitting is a gateway for some bikers to break rules, but I can think of another gateway that got legalized in CO and everyone seems cool with that, lol. Also no one can react faster than prevention, Like saying, "I'll just hurry up an put my helmet on right before I crash or get hit".

    • @charkswitlazers
      @charkswitlazers Год назад +2

      @@desmo200 dudes massively incorrect. It’s been proven to be safer. End of story. A LOT safer. The only people that don’t want bikes getting through traffic past them have ego problems and want bikers to sit and suffer because they have to. Motorcycles should be able to split when safe just like bicycles and pedestrians can.
