Does Queens University have an co-op/internship employment support portal? Will Employers come for on campus interviews to pick students?

    Hey,
    Great video!!
I am planning to apply for the Master's program in Computing Science. Could you please tell me the positives and negatives of the CS department at Queen's and probably a few things I should keep in mind while applying.
    Thanks

      Hello Debayan!
It is Eric here from How2University. I am currently going into 2nd year Computing at Queen's University and I can say that I have enjoyed my 1st year here! Positives I would say is that the work/life balance at the school is very noticeable at Queen's and you have the time to develop your skills like networking with others and participating in many clubs! Also, we are beginning to have a mixture between newer professors and more experienced professors, which is good to have many different styles to see which teaching style you work well in! One negative side I want to point out is that the Queen's Computing program does not offer Co-op Programs, rather an Internship program called QUIP that provides 2nd and 3rd year students with a gap year where they participate in a 12-16 month internship with companies like IBM, AMD, Red Hat, and more! However, from what I have heard, a lot of students do not prefer to take that extra year so they look for internships during the summer (which is also what I did) to stay on a 4 year program here rather than getting set a year back. These are the main things that I would like to point out but if there are any other questions feel free to reach out!

@@how2university Do you think there is any disadvantages to doing a 12 month internship and your degree taking 5 years to complete?

Hi great video! How is the work-life balance for the program? Are there cources related to ml or data sciences in the upper years

Great question! I've always found the workload very manageable. It does vary from one course to another, and certain periods (like midterm season) can be tough. But overall, it's great if you can keep up with the assignments/homework throughout the semester - so no cramming! I also recommend you pick electives that you're genuinely interested in (don't just go for the birds) because that way you'll be more motivated to do the work.
And there are upper year ML and data science courses! I took a second-year data analytics course (CISC 251) that was fantastic. It was project-based and Professor Skillicorn was great! There's also Artificial Intelligence (CISC 352) and Topics in Artificial Intelligence (CISC 453) for 3rd and 4th years, respectively. Potentially some others I'm forgetting about as well.

And to touch a little bit more on work-life balance, the School of Computing hosts some great events throughout the year, whether that's bringing in speakers or having networking events with people in industry. Outside of computing, Queen's has HUNDREDS of clubs you can join to get involved. While studying Computer Science, I would usually dedicate 10 hours/week to clubs and extracurriculars alone. Makes for a much more well-rounded University experience!

What 2nd year courses did you find the hardest?

"Hmm, probably CISC 221 (Computer architecture) and maybe 220 (System level programming). 221 is tough because of how the course is structured. Dave Dove is usually the prof and people tend to find his course challenging. 220 because you learn C, which is personally not my favourite language (especially after being spoiled with Python and Java). The other courses tend to be pretty good, especially if you're strong with math and logical reasoning!" ~ Carolyn
