Level 42 - one of those bands that caught me off guard... BIG time. If I knew nothing about bass playing, I would dimiss these guys as another cheesey 80s pop band from out of the states. But I've been playing bass for over a decade now and I will tell you, NOTHING is further from the truth. Their lyrics are not the best and they come off as corny at times, but the band was solid and very talented. One of my favorite bands. These guys, along with Kajagoogoo (Nick Beggs), are underrated big time.
Probably the safest tv production ever: no risk of stumbling over cables.. :D

Wow, that takes some talent! Mark was able to stand anywhere within 2 feet of the microphone without losing any consistency in his vocal sound!
Apparently his bass plays itself, too. And you gotta love the signature "American Bandstand Live Fadeout," - just in case you weren't sure whether or not they were really playing.

I never quite understood how one region of the world would have such differing tastes from others, but here we are.
The French were absolutely nuts about this album. I was living there at the time of its publication and knew no one who did not own a copy. It was on the radio constantly and vid for "Children Say" was actually filmed in Paris.
It was really something.

Still, the style is pretty good. Even though it's still my favorite band, my image of Level 42 changed a whole lot when I saw their videos. This video brings back that 'cool-sophisticated' feeling a bit.
