- The life and career of Basil Rathbone was anything but elementary, spanning more than 50 years, and becoming a star on stage, screen, and radio, as well as touring a one-man show.
Best remembered for his role of the master detective, Sherlock Holmes, in 14 films, as well as for his portrayal of Villians in the class films The Adventures Of Robin Hood, and The Mark Of Zoro, Basil Rathbone made his mark in brilliant deduction and evil villainy, unsurpassed to this day.

One of my favorites and all time great actors. The best and only true Sherlock Holmes.
I agree! Thank for watching!
Wonderful as Sherlock Holmes!!♥️
Basil Rathbone will always have a special place in my heart!
♥️♥️♥️
I wonder why this is?
I always liked his performances and to me he was and still the perfect Sherlock Holmes.
Such a wonderful actor, anything he's in you can't look at anyone other than him he had such a presence!
I wish I hadn't been so young. I grew up on his movies. He was my fav villain, and my hero. He was such a handsome man.
😏👍
The most perfect Sherlock Holmes ever! Also was brilliant in Robin Hood.
Great tribute to a Legend, and we all know Legends never die!
A brilliant actor!
Wonderful!♥️
He was a fabulous actor! Such a charismatic man. I’ve enjoyed studying his acting beyond his Holmes typecast (By far his greatest work IMO), but he had so much more to offer. As such in the golden age of Hollywood I believe he was, to a certain degree, underrated.
I agree, Sherlock Holmes was his best, they're my personal favorites! But like you said, he had so much more to offer. Basil was great in everything he was in! Thanks for watching!
His autobiography was fascinating!
Greatest Holmes of all time.
Was is amazing is that he was 46 years old when he was in the Adventures of Robin Hood! In the 30s that was considered fairly old for an actor. But he was so athletic he pulled it off.
Never a better Holmes with Nigel Bruce as Watson. Quintessential Holmes
I have to agree with you. Thanks for watching!
Great video. Loved him in Dawn Patrol.
Classy gentleman.
Great review of his life 👍👍 I admire him for many things but his Sherlock was…for me….the quintessential Holmes indeed 😊😊
A dastardly villain and a heroic Holmes.
GREAT
Basil said that Tyrone Power was the most agile swordsman he crossed swords with!
He also added that Errol was wild and reckless to the point where he almost lost an eye in one of the Robinhood scenes.
@@coleparker yes ! Basil was very annoyed by his carelessness! Errol was a wild guy!🌜
@@coleparker he was drunk or hung over!
@@mypeeps1965 I don't think so. Basil and Errol had three dueling scenes, one in 1935 in Captain Blood, and two in the Adventures of Robin Hood in 1938/39. Errol Flynn at that time had not sunk that low.
Parenthetically, the scene in Captain Blood was filmed at Doheny Beach/Dana Point Ca. and is now a boat harbor.
great video - well done, enjoyed learning about his life, thank you
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Great Video
wonderful actor and a wonderful person. one and only sherlock holmes.
His best role , in terms of pure acting, prowess, was neither Sherlock Holmes character any of the costume melodramas, but rather 1939's son of Frankenstein in which he has a tour to force performance as the son of the famed inventor, generating incredible tension throughout the duration of this thriller.
And while, yes, refined, and a gentleman, he was also an insufferable snob as will be seen if one dials up a few interviews, lacking the respect for the young nation of America due to its less than Royal lineage, in spite of the fact that it saved his skin, both humanly and financially during the what time era.
We saw his movies playing the villain, we didn't know about Sherlock . Awm
A gentlemen with class well spoken I think of Shakespeare.
Thank you!!
He had one more radio series after Holmes. It was a mystery show sponsored by Fatima cigarettes. He played a detective as Basil Rathbone.
I didn't know that, thanks for the trivia!
enjoyed this
Thank you! I couldn’t believe my husband had never heard of Basil…
Wow, I am glad you were able to educate him! Thanks for watching!
Well done.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
Basil is not second to Jeremy Brett. Anyone who has read and studied the books can see that Brett badly misinterpreted the part, no doubt in an effort to stand apart from Rathbone.
Did you forget about ( If I were king ) 1938?
I think that Rathbone was the best Holmes even if the movies were not the best. In the books, Holmes was not just an intellect but a force of nature, a fencer a boxer. That was Basil and not Brett much as I liked the Brett series.
Villain...
Second to Jeremy Brett?!?!?? According to whom??? What a joke. You lost any credibility with that remark.
He made many movies during workd war 2. The japanese do not deserve to own any libraries of american movies!
Love Basil Rathbone, but he is second to Jeremy Brett in the portrayal of Holmes. Brett is the quintessential Sherlock Holmes.
He is the best Holmes. But his Watson is the worst one.
He played Holmes like he was a soulless robot. Horrible acting!!
Even the way he said thank you (. 10 Q) was weird !
But good documentary 👏👏
