The contests don't give much XP, and even then, you only gain the XP from winning the contest, not from each successful shot. Going hunting is the fastest way to increase your bow skill, and it will simultaneously increase other stats like agility and vitality, as well. There are quests that can give you in-game reasons to do this, too, so you don't just have to powergame cheese your way through it, either.

The fastes way to earn money in this game is to train lockpicking and than steal from the shops.

I prefer fast traveling until I hit raiders and looting their stuff after I kill them over and over but to each their own.

The archery thing worked for me really early on and had the added benefit of improving my archery skill. Then I started doing the quests where you take down the bandit leaders and I made a lot of cash from looting them. That fast travel raider thing seems like it would work really well too.

What's the best way to train your lockpicking?

I’m not sure what’s best. I just try to open any doors and chests that I can and pay the fine when I get caught. 🤷 Also at the mill I think you can train LP with the guy there.

Extremely immersion-ruining to do that, though. To be honest, if you just go complete the side quests, you will have more than enough coin to get you through the main campaign.
