We will then transition into the mechanism of action of migraine medications and look at the cellular level where these drugs exert their effects. We then talk about the most common names of migraine medications and the general classes they fall within. We conclude this lecture with a discussion on adverse drug reactions and contraindications to migraine medications. We hope you enjoy this lecture and be sure to support us below!

    I swear to God, and I mean this in the nicest way possible, I'd want him as my husband. This man is so knowledgeable and he continues to give us these high quality, clear and detailed videos for free. He does not sell out, or get greedy and he has been doing this for years! My silly comment in the beginning is just to drive home how valuable he is, I know he is married :D

    I suffered from migraines for over 40 years, 2 to 5 severe migraine episodes per week. People that suffered from migraines can relate to chronic excruciating pain, nausea, vomiting & loneliness. I had to stay in a pitch dark room alone, quiet & cool due to sensitivity to lights, smell, alcohol, noise and many forbidden foods.
    I'm glad to get more information from Ninja🙂

      I was the same since I can remember, then I did an elimination diet. When I eliminated instant ramen noodles for 3 months, I did not get migraine. I tried other food with MSG and it came back. I realized its the MSG that triggers my horrible migraine. I grew up with it in almost all our food. These days whenever i crave instant ramen I limit it to 1 a month and I’m ok.

    After 7 years of headaches and visiting way over 10 doctors, finally I got triptans, ergots and anti-seizure for trial last week for the first time. I wanted to understand how they work and found this video. Now I am just angry how come no doctor gave me such basic magraine medicine for 7 freaking years.
    Amazing, clear content - love it!

  • @Lionforaday
    @Lionforaday 2 года назад +30

    These vids are great. I send them to patients to watch. As a physician who is also a migraine sufferer, it grates on my nerves when people describe headaches as migraines when they're clearly not. "I got a full-blown migraine at the concert but I stayed anyway bc it was such a great show," or, "I have a migraine right now, but I still have to run a bunch of errands, so I'll just push myself." When I hear people say these kinds of things, it's clear that what they're experiencing is not a migraine. I worked at a university and had the school's policy's changed; their rules and regulations once read, "Minor illnesses are not acceptable reasons to miss an exam, for eg. colds, food poisoning, migraine headaches." Can you imagine sitting an exam with a migraine? Or with food poisoning? It's challenging to suffer with something so common, yet so misunderstood.

    • @lyndafjellman3315
      @lyndafjellman3315 11 месяцев назад +3

      sure, I'll go to my exam. I'm sure no one will mind when I sit there puking.

    • @jackthompson6296
      @jackthompson6296 Месяц назад

      It’s nice that you changed it one time in one place, but it seems to me the root of the problem is that there are no legal consequences for that kind of stupendously dumb policy.

    • @Lionforaday
      @Lionforaday Месяц назад

      @@jackthompson6296 It has to start somewhere. The point is that the policy was made based on ignorance, not really dumbness - though I know what you mean. And legal consequences aren't really the answer; the school admin needed to be challenged by someone more expert than, say, an admin person - and again, it's people casually referring to a mild headache as "a migraine" that's done this.

    • @jackthompson6296
      @jackthompson6296 Месяц назад

      @@Lionforaday at a minimum it’s a violation of dignity and personal safety to force someone with an illness to work/take an exam while incapacitated, which risks exacerbating their condition and/or an outbreak. If the law can’t protect basic human rights then what good is it?

    • @Lionforaday
      @Lionforaday Месяц назад

      @@jackthompson6296 while I agree with you philosophically, I doubt it's an actual law. Maybe that will change - here in Canadian grade schools, kids can scan barcodes in school hallways to "file human rights complaints," which is a bit nutty considering that there's no education provided to these kids on what their human rights even are (never mind what a violation of them would be). It's easy to say, "what good is the law?" but it has to exist before it can be enforced.

      For me the ONLY thing that works is a cup of strong SASSAFRAS ROOT TEA. It has to be brewed with the Real root. Boil 1/2 oz. of chopped root for 30 minutes until water turns reddish. Tastes like root beer since this is how root beer was flavored for the first 300 years ever since the American Indians taught us Europeans about SASSAFRAS ROOT TEA. One thing Native Americans recommended SASSAFRAS ROOT TEA for was HEADACHES! It was WILDLY popular with migraine headache sufferers in Europe from 1687 to 1965 when artificial SASSAFRAS ROOT TEA was brought on the market. Since highly concentrated SASSAFRAS ROOT TEA is a mild hallucinogen and "tripping" was a big thing in the 1960's the FDA had to say something bad about SASSAFRAS ROOT TEA so after 300 years they called it "cancer causing" without any study but they needed some reason other than "Stopping people from having too much fun" which is not a legal reason. SASSAFRAS ROOT TEA is also the precursor to the street drug Molly or Ecstasy but it takes about 50 highly technical steps to super concentrate it to the level call MDNA.
      In any case SASSAFRAS ROOT TEA was how they discovered Imatrix. It amplifies serotonin in the brain very rapidly unlike SSRI's which require weeks of use to increase serotonin levels.
      You can legally buy Sassafras root cutting for planting trees on ebay or amazon. Its easy to tell if you got the real thing. Scratch root cutting with a knife and a strong rootbeer smell will come off. Also once cleaned and boiled in hot water it will turn the water red and has a strong rootbeer taste. Hard to fake and lets face it there is no need to fake it, there are billions of Sassafras trees growing wild and on private property in the Eastern USA from Michigan to Texas. Everyone who has tried real home brewed Sassafras root tea for ending a migraine has told me it works like nothing else can. Ginger root ALSO amplifies serotonin in the brain but not to the same degree Sassafras tea does.

    Well, that was much better than what we got in medical school, which was basically “just throw drugs at everyone until you reach toxicity“

    What about the use of triptans in hemeplegic migraine? I found out it was contraindicated with this type of migraine. I guess it is because of the severity of the vasoconstriction in the aura phase of the migraine? Are all medications with a vasoconstrictive effect contraindicated in this case, including porpanolol or other beta blockers? What options are there then? Nsaids are certainly not as effective as triptans in my experience. Botox?

    I got a question to ask about metoprolol, on the prophylaxis part it acts on beta 2 receptor for this case or ? Because I know it is a beta 1 receptor blocker

    Dear Dr. Ninja, I have a question please, Could the long term use of my 'triptans' /often weekly, and Ibruprofen more frequently contribute to osteoporosis? I'm suspecting the interference with CGRP. I'd be so grateful for your feedback. Julie RN
