“Tired Old Queen at the Movies” welcomes the New Year with one of the great romances in Classic movies, WATERLOO BRIDGE (1940), directed by Mervyn LeRoy and starring Vivien Leigh, fresh from GONE WITH THE WIND and MGM’s leading matinee idol, Robert Taylor. Set in London during WWI, it tells of a young ballerina, who meets a handsome Corporal during an air raid and they fall immediately in love. He’s whisked off to fight, while she does the best she can, dealing with the fear of losing him and trying to survive without him. Both actors are at the top of their game, the height of their beauty and claimed it was their favorite picture. Happy New Year from all of us at STEVE HAYES: Tired Old Queen at the Movies.

Steve's impression of Maria Ouspenskaya is almost better than the lady herself. This film and That Hamilton Woman (both in glorious black and white) showed Leigh at her breathtaking best. Through illness, emotional and physical, that beauty took a toll. But I remember seeing her in her last film, Ship of Fools, in a crowded NYC movie theater. Her huge closeup in one scene brought gasps of admiration from the audience. She still had it.
Yes she did. Mesmeriuzing. Thanks so much for watching! Best Steve
I SO agree!!! His “impressions” certainly leave an awestruck impression!!! :)
Vivien Leigh at her best is untouchable on the screen, IMO. She is so moving and magnificent in "Waterloo Bridge," and Steve's Maria Ouspenskaya is also off-the-charts!
Thanks so much!
Mervyn Leroy was the director of this wonderful movie. Two years later he directed another uber-romantic movie, Random Harvest with Greer Garson and Ronald Colman and the tragic Susan Peters.
Two classics. LeRoy is a very underrated director of the period. Like Same Wood and Clarence Brown.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ : the fact that Clarence Brown was Greta Garbo's favorite director speaks Volumes.
"He was pretty, he was pretty -- and he tried real hard." The emphasis on "and he tried real hard' made me crack up!
Well.....he was pretty. LOL! Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Robert Taylor was very handsome!
Vivian was so, so beautiful and so brilliantly tender. Robert Taylor was so beautiful too. Sometimes you fall in love with a guy just because he takes your breath away. For his beloved, Elvis Costello sang, “Sometimes I wish that I could stop you from talking when I hear the silly things that you say…” Thanks Steve for sharing another of your favorite films.
My pleasure. Taylor sort of came into his own when he started playing tough characters who were emotionally shut down, especially in Westerns in the " 50's such as; " Westward The Women" and " The Last Hunt". He was also good when he played the occasional menacing character as he did in "Undercurrent', where he tried to kill his wife, Katharine Hepburn. However, I never thought he brought much to the table. Thanks for watchig! Steve
One of my top ten favorite movies. It is totally romantic filled with great MGM gloss (for instance the lavish set forthe little tea room meeting with Roy's Mom is so elegant and hostess is often used character actress Norma Varden, she was the victim in
"Witness for the Prosecution".) All the supporting cast are first rate MGM contract people. And I love the music from the little appreciated Herbert Stothart, Maybe it is cornball but I love it. Leigh made 3 films in 1939-1940 before returning to England for the duration. All of them are wonderful, GWTW, Waterloo Bridge and Lady Hamilton. Steve, thanks for paying attention to this wonderful movie.
I love this movie and I adore Vivien Leigh! So glad you liked it! many Thanks! Steve
Loved this film! Saw it many years ago, late night on Turner Classics. Loved Vivien's performance, and Taylor was so damn good looking that you overcome his accent, or lack of one. I read somewhere that MGM was originally going to give the leading credits to Taylor, and not Leigh. However, just coming off her master class performance as Scarlett O'Hara, both Taylor and Leigh convinced MGM that the lead should most definitely be Vivien Leigh. Another Great review Steve!
She was magnificent. I always thought it a shame that they didn't manage to get more films out of her before she defeceted to England and the War. Thanks; Steve
I especially like Virginia Fields in this film. She is what every down and out friend needs. Lucile Watson always gives us an A performance...of course, I adore Vivien Leigh and Robert Taylor as fate filled lovers.
Virginia should have had a bigger career. And I agree, Watson was always the level headed mother personified. Thanks for watching! Steve
@STEVEHAYESTOQ I see her on Perry Mason, several guest roles. She had the talent and the looks. Hollywood didn't do her justice.
My mother loved this movie. And Robert Taylor, of course.
Oh, my mother was in love with Robert Taylor! I had to agree, he was beautiful.
He had a huge following. This was one of the last times they cast him as a romatic lead. He kept wanting to play tough guys. MGM managed to squeeze a few more out of him, then it was ganagsters and westerns. Steve
Yup. @@sustainfem
"Oh Lady Margaret, you are naive!" - this is one of my all-time favorites too! Vivien's performance is breathtaking and haunting. I really think she deserved another Oscar for this film and if she hadn't just won for GWTW, she would have gotten her 2nd for "Waterloo Bridge" before the other Oscar for "Streetcar."
I think she definitely should have been in the running. My favortute that year was Bette Davis in " The Letter", but to each his own! Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
Steve your love of movies and the craft of acting is palpable. Love every review and i get so excited when you smiling face pops up .
Peace and Blessings 🙏🏾❤️ 🙏🏾
Thank you so much! Best; Steve
Oh, thank you! This movie is a gem of a gem and it is mostly unknown. And if you want to wash every tear from your eye, this will do it.
Every character is so indelibly drawn. I think I like her the best when she is coming into the train station as a prostitute slyly smiling at every guy, disturbing sad music playing, cheap, tinkling piano...and she dies magnificently at the end.
Adrian did her costumes.
You are lookin' good, bud. Happy New Year!
Yes, it's a romantic field day and so touching. Thanks, for the compliment Buddy! I'lll give you an hour to cut that out.
I have never seen this one. Thanks for the recommendation. And I love the anecdote about Stanwyck.
Barbara was a smart cookie. Happy New Year! Steve
I originally saw the 1931 version starring Mae Clarke (and a blonde ingenue named Bette Davis at her loveliest!). I loved it. Of course, MGM remade it with the incomparably talented and lovely Vivien and, as you say, that "MGM gloss." I really appreciate both versions and recommend a viewing of the smaller '31 production, as well. It's Pre-Code, mind you, so a touch more obvious about the prostitution!
I love that version and anything direcetd by the marvelous James Whale.
A wonderful movie, thank you for covering it! Sir Charles Aubrey Smith was one of the most notable actors of that era. A very handsome man in his old age (and gorgeous in his youth), his profile was famous. A wonderful actor!
He was wonderful in everything, I recently saw him two of his later works, "And Then There Were None" and " An Ideal Husband" and, as always, he was delightful in both. Steve
While I'll aways be besotted by the 1931 version of Waterloo Bridge (Mae Clarke broke my heart. Douglass Montgomery was perfect), the pleasure of Steve Hayes company reviewing this version is a marvelous way to start a new year. What a great selection! Thank you and Happy New Year Steve & Johnny!!
Happy New Year to you, as well. Thank you for watching! Steve & Johnny
A wonderfully romantic choice for a New Year's movie, Steve! Have a great 2024!!!
You too and thanks foer watching! Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ ☺
Happy New Year!
One of Vivien Leigh's best, though a bit OTT at times ("Oh, Lady Margaret, you are naive.") Still, a wonderful romantic tearjerker, and lovely chemistry with Taylor.
But Vivien's best chemistry was with Olivier in 'That Hamilton Woman' ('Lady Hamilton' across the pond). What a breathtaking couple they were! ('Now I have kissed you... through two centuries.")
Thanks for another year of great reviews; hoping you have many more! All the best!
If you keep watching 'em, we'll keep making 'em. Thank you so much! Steve
I enjoyed every second! You brought this wonderful movie to life. I weep buckets every time I see it. Today's movies do not compare. Many thanks
I don't think so either, not in terms of romantic entertainments. Thanks for watching! Steve
Happy New Year, boys! The high-point is always when you do impersonations, dear Steve. I fell Off My Seat! You are going to paralyze me one of these days!
Now, Albert...if you don't stop, your liable to continue. LOL! Steve
This one snuck up. As always a great review of a very good film. I actually just read about the trouble getting this made with the PCA.
Damn censors! Oh, well, at least it got made and Vivien had another hit!
I love this movie! No one was as masterful in the star-crossed lovers role as Vivian Leigh. She breaks my heart she's so noble and resigned to her loss of love and future happiness. Thanks for reviewing this! Happy New Year, Steve! Wishing you every good thing in 2024!
You too and thank you so much for watching! Steve
Oh, Steve, what a treat for the New Year.! one of my favorite MGM romances, a gorgeous film and you did it justice! Thank you and a Happy New Year to you and your team,. Michael - South Africa
Greetings to you, Mike & South Africa! Hope all is well and Happy New Year! Steve
Taylor is better than his usual standard in this, inspired by his costar no doubt but it's Vivien's picture and her performance is simply exquisite. I've always wondered how she missed out on an Oscar nomination (in my opinion she should have won) for this role. There was certainly room for her, the nomination list in 1940 is all over the place (Martha Scott in Our Town really? No offense to Martha (a good actress) but she didn't belong. Don't get me started on Ginger in Kitty Foyle!) but considering Vivien was white hot it's surprising she wasn't included. Maybe because she wasn't under a long term contract so the studios threw their weight elsewhere.
Same goes for Virginia Field who is just wonderful as Kitty. I guess it was a similar situation to The Shop Around the Corner from the same year where the nomination committee just weren't feeling the film or perhaps there was such a super sufficiency of quality to chose from some pictures fell by the wayside.
I can see why Vivien would feel so fondly towards it even more than GWTW. She was in a good place emotionally when she made it, Olivier was near by, she was being madly celebrated, she was familiar with and got along with her costar and unlike Scarlett and GWTW the pressure of the film was minimal.
I agree with your opinions on the 1940 contenedrs and Vivien should have been nominated. Also in complete agreement about "Kitty Foyle". Best; Steve
MY FAVORITE MOVIE, THANK YOU.
You are So welcome! Steve
Oh yes, this is one of my favorite romances, that scene at the New Years, it's one of the most beautiful and romantic kisses ever filmed. I love this one! Thank you for the video!
I agree. It's a romantic feast! Steve
Happy New Year to you, too, Steve! It's always a treat to see a new review by you. Speaking of Robert Taylor, will you ever be reviewing Westward The Women? He and Denise Darcel strike sparks in that one.
I did! Check out my YouTUbe channel and you'll find it! My favorite western ever! Happy New Year! Steve
Steve! I can't tell you how much I love these! Do more Vivien impressions. Do all of them; you're a pro!!!
LOL! Thanks for the encouragement., though I imagine the people I do are waiting for me in Heaven with ax in hand! Thanks for watching! Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Well, the only one who MIGHT have an ax is JOAN! :)😀
Here's hoping 2024 is wonderful for you Steve- love the reviews x
You too, Dr Megan! Thank you so much for watching! Steve
Just thinking of the scene you so carefully described, I recall the first time I saw the film and it was that scene which got me very choked up. It was pure movie magic!
By the way… the scene is on RUclips.
@@dwa22204 This one pulls at tyour heart strings. Vivien is radiant. Steve
You picked a WONDERFUL movie for this one. It doesn’t seem possible, but your reviews just keep getting better and better! Steve, you and Johnny are always the highlight of my month! Happy New Year! 🙂
Thanks so much!
Fantastic review ( as always ) I need to own this film, your description of the movie with that mgm gloss did it for me. I’m not a lover of Robert Taylor but everything else about the movie sounds fantastic.
The search for a copy starts now thanks Steve for your comments and can I wish you an everyone at tired old queen of the movies happiness for the year ahead.
Stephen
Thanks so much and Happy New Year to you too. Steve
Another fantastic review. I look forward to each and every time you post. I love this movie, Vivian was so beautiful. I am not sure why she wasn't nominated for an Oscar for this performance. Happy New Year.
Who can tell what the Academy was thinking? She should have nominated for " That Hamilton Woman "as well. Steve
One of my all-time favorite films! Thank you Steve. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to you too! Steve
This movie always brings me to tears no matter how many times l watch it.
A classic weepie, for sure.
OMG! Thank You Steve, and Everyone at TOQ. Wonderful Surprise for New Year and gratefully appreciate this. Your Reviews bring so much light and joy to those of us who adore film history. Take Care of yourselves! Much Love. ❤💋
I'm so glad you are pleased! Thank you for watching ! Happy New Year! Steve
Beautiful but sad, sad movie!
up. A geniune tear jerker.
Never seen it, will watch it...those war days must have been stressing for British studios making the movies !
Greetings, Tom.
Indeed and stressful for the brit stars over here, who wanted to get back home to their loved ones. Not all of them took the steps to do so that Vivien, Larry, Leslie Howard and David Niven did.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Leslie Howard paid a high price.
My mother said the worse thing that happened to her in the 1930s was when Robert Taylor married Barbara Stanwyck. She was devastated. Bearing in mind she was a 15 year old schoolgirl living in Scotland and Europe went to war in the same year, I think she was not in her right mind. She was besotted with him. She loved this film.
Sjhe was on of many. Taylor, like Tyrone Power over at 20th Century Fox had huge followings among teenagers...of ever persuasion. I remember feeling the same way when I found out Robert Redford tied the knot. Oh, well... Happy New Year! Steve
Love this movie ❤
I do too!
Wonderful review Steve! I always thought Vivien should have been nominated for Best Actress for Waterloo Bridge and again for That Hamilton Woman. She was amazing and ahead of her time in many ways. Thank you for your delightful insight!
I totally agree with you!
Steve happy New Years and the best of everything what a beautiful review and first rate movie choice I have never seen Robert Taylor perform any better than in this tragic romance . Vivienne Leigh’s performance I feel if I may be so bold is even greater than her work in Gone With The Wind. I loved your take on Maria Ouspenskaya a real favourite love her in The Rains Came and Kings Row . I don’t weep at the end of many movies but this one does it to me every time . Thank you so much Steve as usual I loved it all the very best a fan cheers Carl 😂.
Dear carl, I love a good weepy and this one fills the bill beautifully. Everyone is so good. Steve.
Wonderful film. Vivian Leigh is perfect. Happy New Year Steeeeve!
Thaaaaaaank you! LOL!
Steve, thank you. I have a new appreciation for this movie and I’m going to watch it next time with new eyes and ears. The clips you show are always great, as is your enthusiasm. The artistry overall is truly art - writing, acting, wardrobe, set design, lighting, music, etc - it’s art. You can watch this movie and other fine ones such as this and you’ll always get something from it, over and over. I also connect these old movies with the era my mother was alive as a young 14 year old girl in 1940. She was very slim and beautiful and could have easily modeled. The correlation always makes it so special and interesting for me to watch this genre. To see her time and how it was then for her and thinking of her going to the movies to see this and other movies for the first time herself. She practically had TCM in her veins. She loved those old movies. I think so she could look back too. Thank you, thank you. I expect I will have Kleenex close by. 😊
The Kleenex is probably a good idea.I love this era as well. So roamntic. TRhanks for watching and here's to your beautiful mother! Best; Steve
Marvelous - thank you! One of my favorite movies. That Auld Lang Syne scene is magic. Your impressions are so broad and complexly authentic at the same time! Well done! I hope you give a nod to its predecessor someday. There is much to love about Mae Clarke and Kent Douglass whose scenes together are sublime. Frederick Kerr gives a master class in underplayed comic acting as he “fusses” with Bette Davis in this, her third film. BTW, wonderful Ethel Griffies appears in both versions! C. Aubrey Smith also shines brightly in Little Lord Fauntleroy here on RUclips, a beautifully made movie. Thank you again. 2024 starts with the perfect film!
My pleausure! Thank you for watching and Happy New Year! Steve
Steve, I think you need to do a Maria Ouspenskaya movie marathon review! ❤
I think if I did, someone would get the Wolfman to bite me. LOL!
What a good film this is, especially with that New Year's Eve scene. I'm glad Robert Taylor didn't try to do an English Accent. Happy New year to you. I along with all who follow your channel are looking forward to the rest of 2024's picks and with you picking it's usually a nice surprise.
What a lovely compliment. Thank you so much for watching! Steve
I’ve always found this movie to be a real bummer, but your impressions are so pitch perfect you just always crack me up 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻.
I'm so glad! Thanks for watching! Steve
Steve, so glad to see you and this great movie. Things up here (Caz/New Woodstock) are good. Can't help but recall your role in the 6th grade, Mrs. Miles' operetta. lol. You were great and still are. Take care, Tim C
Ah Tim, how nice to hear from you! This made my day! I hope you aren't snowed under up there. I miss New Woodstock, especially this time of year, I loved my winters groiwing up there. I hope this finds you well, happy and enjoying the good life! Happy New Year, Buddy! Steve

Boy, am I lucky, another year of videos from the team at Tired Old Queen at the Movies! Thank you each of you for the work that goes in to each video. While this movie didn't do much for me, I'd watch it again just for how luminous Vivien Leigh is throughout it. Someday, I'd like to catch up with the pre-code version, which James Whale directed.
I wish you all a happy New Year!
Happy New Year to you too. The pre-code version is also great, directed by the wonderful James Whale. Best Wishes; Steve

Between Leigh and Taylor, there was a preponderance of pulchritude. I think Taylor was Hollywood's most handsome star.
He and Tyrone Power run neck n' neck as far as I'm concerned. Gorgeous!
Fabulous film and a fabulous review, Steve. And yes, Vivian was absolutely beautiful.💟Happy New Year to you and Johnny🥂🍾

And wasn't it kinda' magical? I think back on the impressions these movies had on me the first time I saw them at various times in my youth and they have a special place in my heart. I guess that's why I do this, so I can get people to watch or re-watch them again and create or fuel those special memeories. Thanks for watching! Steve

SPOILER ALERT, but a funny story: I was going to watch "Waterloo Bridge" on television years ago on a local TV station. Just before the movie was shown was the TV program "Kate and Allie" starring Jane Curtin and Susan St. James. I watched "Kate and Allie" and in that episode right before the movie, Kate says, "It like in the movie 'Waterloo Bridge' when Vivien Leigh kills herself in the end". AAAUUGGGHH!!!
I'm that way with 'Titanic"! LOL! Steve
I always want to immediately go watch the movies you talk about!

Ooooohhhhhhh i LOVE this movie. It broke my heart, but it did it beautifully ❤
Yes, it's incredibly romantic, as it should be.

Aren't you kind. Thanks you so much! Steve
'Deece performance tonight was disgraceful. The way you danced was thorny. Is there a full moon out tonight. What am I looking at here' good old Maria Ouspenskaya.
Yup! You can't keep an old "wolf keeper" down! She was marvelous!
Steve, love you for doing this. Vivien glorious, but Taylor British via Nebraska hilarious...yes he's pretty (but not "Glorious Hussy" pretty) but also pretty ridiculous. Defining moment for me is Ouspenskaya saying "Your pirouettes are EP E LEP TIC....
LOL! My favorite line!
Dear Steve, I thought you were taking a well-earned break, but instead you were making this wonderful review of a sublimely heart breaking film which (as others have said) is too often forgotten. I know when it comes to beautiful actresses that your heart belongs to Gene Tierney, but just look at Vivien - she's like a piece of Dresden china, so perfect that it's hard to believe anyone be that exquisite and also be such a wonderful actress. God, how I loathe Maria Ouspenskaya (you've got her accent so right). She talks as though her teeth are glued together and she always plays characters who'd make Stalin wet himself. Robert Taylor's accent is slightly jarring but he is indeed very pretty, and the romance and the tragedy sweep you along with it; I saw it decades and decades ago on television and have never forgotten it, because I ended up a sobbing heap at the end. And I totally agree with your respondent who referred to "That Hamilton Woman", in which Vivien Leigh's beauty was almost incredible, and in which she also had a tragic (and historically accurate) fate. When he was old, Laurence Olivier watched "That Hamilton Woman" with his son (by his first wife, whom he divorced to marry Vivien) and kept saying he'd never seen beauty like it. Thank you again for reminding us all of this film. I sent you New Year good wishes some time ago via your review of "Old Acquaintance" but got no reply (heartbroken sob) so I was rather worried, but it's wonderful to see you here. Lots of love, Alida
Happy New Year! Well, the holidays were a whirlwind, so I got a bit behind. I shot amny new epsodes back in November which will be released monthly. I've been obsessed with Vivien Leigh for decades and always regretted that she didn't make more films before she went back to England for the duration of the war. I', also astonished, but not surprised at th ignorance of the Academy at not having nominated her for this or for " That Hamilton Woman". Taylor was too much of a Joe McCarthy man later in the decade for me to ever take him seriously. I thought he was an idiot. He was MGM's beautiful, resident matinee idol, like Tyrone Power over at Fox, who acted rings around him. Hope you had a wonderful New Year. Best Wishes and Lovely to hear from you. Steve
Oops. The other missive was stopped short by a misguided finger. Continuing: Stanwyck made 3 films with Fonda, one of them a classic. Now THAT would have been a marriage made in heaven! Or someplace pretty. And lively. All that said, It is ALWAYS a pleasure to experience your sparkle. Our all too infrequent meetings bring a sweet joy in these fleeting moments and make me feel good...Thank you!
Oh Daniel, if I didn't know better I'd marry you... then, I could have been Steven Stanwyck! Fabulosa! LOL! Thanks as always for your kindness and support. So appreciated! Happy New Year! Steve
