yepper @jamesmiller800, I got a 5er 25 years ago when I started, I've covered most styles with it and the fretless as well. Recently was gifted a pretty cool 4 string shorty that has opened my eyes a bit, way easier to slap and cover most classic rock songs while singing. Now I need THREE BASSES!!!
Ooh love those Corts! They're ridiculously good! Insane quality to price ratio, definitely near the top of the market. And yeah I've been on 5s for a long time now, and I'm kinda jonesing for a 6 now lol. Extended range is just nice to have!
I love both 4 and 5. Love how the 4 string has more space between strings. Love how the 5 string gives me more notes in one location. I usually play the 4 string for my band's music, since I know exactly where I want to do everything. When I'm going to a jam where different music is played, I like to play the 5 string since I can get to more notes more quickly. Also, playing the 5 allows you to play every note you'd want to play using frettted notes; on a 4 string you often have to play the low E note as an open string to get the best sound, where on a 5 string the E is at the 5th fret on the B string. Another bonus, if you learn songs on the 5 and don't play any open strings, playing the song in a different key is much simpler, just move your hand up or down the neck.
A 5-string bass can do everything a 4-string can do. But not vice-versa! Plus more range horizontally
i agree
I just got one, and it is definitely growing on me.
The sound of this bass sounds so full, it just gives me the tingles.
It's only superior if its what the gig calls for. I have both and play them for different types of shows.

How could a gig possibly call for a 4-string? There's nothing you can play on a 4 that you can't play on a 5.
not to mention you can still tune to drop d on a 5 string if the riffs are easier in drop tuning

I can't imagine going back to 4 strings. I'm not big on "tradition" and the 4-string doesn't bring anything else to the table.
Danny Sapko is going to get mad at you
Bring it on!
Is there a difference in tone between the 4 and 5 string?

I disagree I really do Im an Old Schooler but it aint got nothin to do with that it a 4 string simply has a greater sounding bass and 5 is TOO many
