The argument for Sir Alex and Aberdeen is an ok one... but after seeing so many great managers show up at Old Trafford, and they still suck? Actually shows what a great job Pep has done... he turned a good Barca side to a great side, he changed the way Bayern played, and city as well... he's managed some really big characters, and many many different players, yet he still managed to make all these players play the same way as he wanted... that's a very underrated skill.

This is the same argument against Nessi and other great players and managers who started their careers right at the top and never built their reputations by being successful at smaller clubs. This is just a dumb argument as it implies being successful at a big is much easier, which is far from the case. Managers have a lot more room at smaller clubs than the two clubs where they have to deliver instant success. Also, it has been much tougher in the last twenty years or so for small clubs to succeed as football isn't as equal as it used to be. Days when a promoted could be champion in a couple of years are over. However, Leicester City did great in 2016. So, why is Ranieri not mentioned since he managed Leicester to the single greatest ac achievement we've seen in Premier League history? Or at the biggest shock. Arsenal's 2004 unbeaten season night is a greater achievement. Managers and players can only beat who is in front of them and not managing or playing for a small shouldn't make their achievement less. It's best to compare when they have equal or similar teams. It is like the old claim about Messi not being good since he never played at Stoke in the winter.

@jack28aug not a single team in the epl has had more financial backing than City have. News flash - not all big teams come with bank accounts balance. Bayern are rich and always buy the best players within the league annually. Lewandowski was Klopp, Neuer, That list is long. Klopp is an underdog manager. He's a firm believer in developing players who are underrated.
I dare say, klopp has never signed a world class player in their prime. Never ever.

The UCL is the hardest thing to win and there are a lot of factors that contribute to winning. Many great teams and managers don't win it or don't win it more than once.

Liverpool fan, but has to be Sir Alex over Pep. The longevity, consistency and without relying on 1/few superstars as well as doing it organically, has to be him. The older managers just handled way more things beyond the coaching. The likes of Sir Alex, Paisley, etc did everything at the club so not really much comparison. For modern day managers, I'd say probably Sir Alex, Ancelloti, Pep, Jose, Klopp, Wenger.

Thought Carra was spot on with all his picks. I know so many casuals will be upset about VVD. The argument that people make is funny too. Yes those players have longer careers, more successful careers, more trophies. But it’s a team sport, they didn’t win those all without he other 10 players on the pitch. When people say VVD it’s very very simple. Take the player (not their achievements) just the player and compare them. VVD is taller, faster, stronger, better on the ball than almost every single one of those other CBs. He finished 2nd in the balon d’or for a reason….none of those others guys cracked the top 8/9. Period. VVD on that man Utd team is the greatest Cb of all time. On that Chelsea team he’s the greatest CB of all time. As an individual player. Not his fault Pick decided to blatantly scissor kick his knee off. Not his fault he played for a LFC reluctant to pump money into the team while City racked up 115 reasons why LFC didn’t win more.

It is disappointed that Caragher doesn't see stupid it is ti judge players and magaers for which tram they didn't mabage or play for. The sane argument apolies to Messi. For me Guardiola is the Messi of football. They both started at the very top and never had to go for smalker clubs yi prive themselves. Guardiola has literally managed three teans only and hadnt bern manager as long as the other greats. It's bot easy to manage Barca, Bayern and Man City and sert and keep sethi g bew stabdards that proves difficult for any to follow. Guardiola has dibe practicalky what every great manager has dine and he has done ina very dhor period comparatively. And wrre not simply talking about great nunbers and trophies. I'm taking about how he can reievent positions and creates that insisy on emposibg their style on their oppnents. Great managers like Ferguson, Wenger abd Mourinho alk bended their knee to his Barca, the nost dominant team team I've ever. From a footballing oiint of view it is about enposing yourself on the oppnebts and no team has been able to do tgat better Guardiola Barca. He also indurectly assissted dominant Spanish team which was nade up mostly of Barca team. Guardikka us the goat and will go down as the goat. Even putting aside his incredube record, i willl akways defend Guardiola because he is a football lover he isnt anti football unlike Mourinho. I nucg prefer mabagers who are forward thibking and play in open abd attack minded way and who will try ti enoose that on their oppositiin. I dislike mabagers who are so defebsive ninded and oark the bus and are risk averse. Defending all the time and hanging gir dear life. That kills it for the neutrals.
