I think those were superimposed there, filmed for real, and overlayed. That's how SFX were and should be, without CGI.

John Travolta has been in some good action movies. This is his best one. Others? The Punisher 2004, Broken Arrow, and From Paris With Love.
About From Paris With Love film, he was sort of a good federal agent.
