  • AJ Allmendinger has been one of the premier road course racers in NASCAR for over a decade, but the California native hasn't had much success at his home track of Sonoma Raceway. Meanwhile, Shane van Gisbergen has taken NASCAR by storm and looks poised to become the sport's next big star.
In this clip from the O'Reilly Auto Parts Pit Reporters, NASCAR journalists Deb Williams and Kelly Crandall examine the internal pressure Kaulig Racing's dynamic duo feels on road courses, if Shane van Gisbergen has the right personality to be a global superstar and why NASCAR is loving the increased presence of international stars from the V8 Supercars, Formula 1 and other racing series. #NASCAR

SVG isn't an Australian driver he is a New Zealand driver that dominated the Australian racing scene the same as Scott McLaughlin. I am now a Nascar fan from Auckland, New Zealand because of the Giz and its great to see him so much more comfortable with the media than when he was in the V8 supercars.

All you have to remember is that SVG is a veteran, not a rookie. He has been winning since 1998 at 9 years old. He is a three times Supercars Champion and has won in everything from Le Mans, GT Cup, rallying and speedway. 26 years of it. Back home his nickname is The Spider. He will wait for his chance and pounce on the slightest error by the car in front. He can win in any format and has done so and deserves respect. And his close competitors in Nascar, do that. He is the NZ version of his hero, 8 times LeMans winner and mentor, Tom Kristensen. Now the press need to realise that being born in the USA does not make you better than anyone else. Once he gets his oval track and superspeedway game sorted he will be a winner there too, and his great quality is endless patience. Just like a spider waiting at the edge of the web.

I met with SVG on debut at Oran Park in the Team Kiwi car. Same age as me too and I've pretty much watched every race of his professional career. It's that year after year battling with the best touring car race drivers in the world that has made him so good. Tander, Whincup, Winterbottom, Mclaughlin, Lowndes etc. The Nascar Cup series debut win isn't the only amazing victory at first attempt. The NZ grand prix win is nuts and even an LMP2 car in Asia Lemans he was faster then the regulars. He's also won Bathurst 12 hour and the World GT Endurance Cup formally Blancpain.

Don't forget rallying. Guy is legendary and of similar versatility to Kyle Larson. Watching those 2 battle on the coming seasons will be a treat. They need to do a side solo together and go heads up across 3 or r disciplines. Say Indy car, NASCAR, rally car and sprint car . Would be a great watch.

Even though svg is a kiwi, there's a lot of Aussies cheering their kiwi mates on.. it'll be interesting to see how the next couple of guys from downunder have their first crack this weekend.. I'm enjoying nascar for the first time.. not a fan of the green and white checkered flags to be honest. Just seems weird to stop a race 3 times.. kills the whole endurance bit. Cars have to go fast and go long enough down here to be considered worthy. Tyres too

"He's exactly where he should be at this point" I think he's miles ahead of where he should be as a rookie. Any race is extremely hard to win, just look at Dinger, he's not exactly racking up wins with all of his experience and for Shane to get that win ahead of him is huge.

Would have been great if SVG was in the Cup with Brown and Waters this weekend. That would have gotten serious attention down under. Still pretty amped to see if SVG can go back to back. I suspect he will be taken out however. The legal contact is the biggest difference to Supercars when they are racing Road Course. I’m picking Brown will struggle with that too. Waters might adapt quicker, but he certainly has below average levels of luck….
