For those of you that know the New Testament, Herod was the villain in the Gospel of Matthew’s version of Jesus’ birth. The Magi follow a star to Judea and consult King Herod asking where the King of the Jews has been born…referring to Jesus, not Herod. Herod sees this as a threat to his rule, so according to the story, he orders every male child in Bethlehem under the age of 2 to be killed. But besides a baby-killing tyrant, what do we know about the historical Herod the Great? This episode will examine some of the biggest building projects sponsored by Herod: The Jerusalem Temple, Masada, Herodium, and Caesarea.

Its not biblical though. Its only canonical in Catholics. Still a missed oppurtunity.
@@josephdanieljirehdimacali4418 Yeah, I had a Hasmonean episode planned, but it fell through in production. My thought is that future potential seasons will fill in all the gaps (I also skipped the Exodus, Saul, the return from Persia, etc.).
@@josephdanieljirehdimacali4418 Its not biblical? That's relative i.e. Following the masoretic text of the Rabbinic Hebrew or Protestant Bible - for Christians a Northern Eurocentric perspective. In the oriental and eastern church traditions there are eight different canons. Personally, if I was a believer, I might think the Ethiopians had a point with the book of Enoch, given its cited in the New Testament epistle of Jude.

I just saw this come up on my feet as I am a recent subscriber. I totally love the content I've heard so far. I actually wished the segments were longer. Especially this one I haven't even heard it yet but I can tell you hands down I can listen to stuff about how it all day. At the very least a half hour segment would have done a little Justice.

This series has been great so far! I am curious how you decide what to cover since you aren't really following a continuous historical line. What I mean is, although you are mostly following a chronological order, you are jumping between various sections of the history that don't lead directly from one to the other. Regardless you do a great job giving a good overview of the history with the examples you use. Are you picking topics with the most archeological evidence that can be discussed? Or just specific points in the history that you feel are the most relevant? Something else?

Someone please help! In the playlist of 'excavating the history of the Bible'- video 9 was the lead up to Babylonian exile of the elites, video #10 appears to be a tangent discussing the rise of the Hebrew language and now #11 is about Herod? What the heck happened to the videos discussing the Babylonian exile and after that? How did we jump to King herod? Am I missing a place to find content in this series?

I truly love these videos, the channel, everything. But... Wait a moment, what happened during the exile and afterwards? As far as I know, the exile in Babylon was a turning point in Israeli history, when the Hebrew scriptures were written and compiled, why hasn't this been covered? I'm really curious to know your take on this...

Jews were extraordinarily rich back in the days. Most Jews were bankers. Jews excelled in the banking institutions

wait a minute... if Herod died in 4 BC how did he order the killing of all male children after the magi showed up and asked him about Jesus’ birth? am I missing something?

While that is often true, in this case it's not the Bible's fault. The Bible obviously never says "Jesus was born in 1 AD".
This discrepancy between Herod dying in 4 BCE and Jesus' birth being dated to 4 years later, is the fault of the guy who etsablished that date, a monk named Dionysius Exiguus who lived in the 6th century CE. He just made a computational error and got the year of Jesus' birth wrong. But his count of the years became customary, and so we've ended up with Jesus technically being born before "Jesus' birth".

The word herod appears 46 times in the NT. It is reference to 5-6 different ones. the heads/horns/crowns etc in Rev 12 are a reference to the herodian dynasty.
So what was his actual name? "Herod" is a dynastic title and Magnes is a Latin reference to being Herod 1 or Herod The Great.
It seems that the dynastic title was named after Herod, just like Caesar and Augustus at the same period
"Augustus" wasn't loving towards his own people either.
Any scholarly consensus on the whole baby murder stuff?
Most say that it is legendary, since the Gospel of Matthew is the only place that recalls the event. Others say that the Massacre of the Innocents was not out of character for Herod the Great, and not the greatest of his crimes. Also, the small size of Bethlehem at the time means that the number of deaths involved (between 6 and 20 depending on the authors) was not that great, so it was not recorded by historians.

On an actual serious note, if Herod was buried at Herodium, what kinds of explanations would we have for his body being missing? Would political rivals have intentionally desecrated it? Or would something like animals be more likely?
Herod was a symbolic person, and his body could have been destroyed either by the Romans or Jewish rebels

There are accounts where ancient Jews forced conversion on neighboring peoples. This seems such at odds with current Jewish attitudes towards conversion (discouraging it). Can you discuss this difference?

Jesus was born probably right before his death, the 1 AD as date was a little miscalculation made by dyonisus the humble, the monk that first proposed this dating system.

Before Christ--Before Common Era
Ado Domini--Common Era.
To not only be inclusive to other religous history but also to lessen confusion.

Herod the great did not try to kill Jesus, his son did - Herod Antipous
Antipas had no power in Bethlehem, he was king of Galilee. It's either Herod the Great or Herod Archelaus

-Listen more closely to the beginning of the video about (the story of the magi asking King Herod where the king of the Jews was born). The magi is referring to the place where ‘Jesus of Nazareth’ was born, not where King Herod was born

You claim that Herod's father being an Idumean meant that he was only half Jewish, implying that he was in fact half Jewish from his mother's side. Was his mother Jewish? Wasn't she a non Jewish Arab?
His mother Nabataean , Josephus said the family converted to Judaism two generations before but some historians consider him to be Pagan so this is why he killed his Jewish wife with her children
Andrew: One of the most significant restorations that Herod accomplished was the Tomb of the Patriarchs, a place holy to All the Abrahamic faiths to this day. How could you have left that out? It is a missed opportunity.

Different Herod. If I recall correctly, several of his heirs took his name, including Herod Antipas, Herod Archelaeus, and others. Herod the Great is likely the one featured in the Matthew birth narrative. The Herod you're thinking of was likely Antipas.
There was a miscalculation in the birth of Jesus. Today, most scholars agree that Jesus was born from 6 to 4 BC. Also, Herod the Great, the one from this video, was the father of Herod Antipas, the one who killed John the Baptist.
Herod Antipas was the "King" (actually tetrarch) that ruled over Galilee when John the Baptist was executed and during Jesus' crucifixion. He was the son of Herod the Great.
