I went with the SG because it was mostly what I loved about the Les Paul but it didn't weigh 9 lbs. It's also easier to get the SG's sound to sit in a mix than the Les Paul, which always seems to hog more of the frequency spectrum when you record them. After you play one for awhile and get used to the way the neck is set forward, you start to miss that in other guitars. I suspect this is why so many SG players only play SGs and will do so for the duration of their careers. That's pretty much where I am now. The SG has become the gold standard every other guitar design has to live up to.
I'm using it right now to record some new tracks for my heavy band and it's fantastic. Downtuned to D, it's got muscle and balance. And yes, simpler in the mix. At least to my ears.
My first guitar was a 60's Gibson ES 225 that my father gifted me. He traded his aluminum flat bottom boat, motor, and trailer for it. However, it wasn't until I bought my first guitar, a 1984 Gibson SG, that I started to learn how to play. I've had many different guitars, including 1 Fender Strat, but the SG remained my favorite. I was inspired by Jimi Hendrix to play guitar, but the Strat did nothing for me. If anything, as far as Fender guitars go, I would probably get a Telecaster.
I'm two days into my first Gibson SG and it's a hoot. Looking to hop into a Punk outfit and give it some riffs to burn. Anyone else who just got theirs, congratulations! Still love my Les Pauls, but SG don't hurt none either! Crank the volume six string warriors! All the best to you!
Nice! Good luck on getting your band together, and looking forward to hearing the music! You'll love playing that SG on stage. Thanks for watching!
Im more of a les paul guy but i can appreciate a good sg
Good video! Years ago, when I decided I wanted a 'real' guitar, I had only a few requirements. 1. double humbuckers, 2. stop bar tail and tune-o-matic bridge (which I thought pretty much limited me to Gibson, since I first played them on my friend's Les Paul), and 3. I had neck problems and wanted something light weight. The SG fit that bill, so I started going to all the music stores near me to try them. I finally played 'the one' at the most local music store, after driving all over the region over a few weeks, and it was my dream guitar. I love it. I still play it all the time, almost 20 years later. 2004 SG Standard, heritage cherry.
Love this story. Definitely something wonderful about finding the right guitar - but the search itself can be fun too. Congrats on the find, and thanks so much for watching!
I’ve been playing electric guitar for 50 years. The SG is my favorite. Doesn’t need to be a Gibson, just love the SG style! Enjoyed this video very much!
I laughed so hard over the "I will survive" lyrics.
Your sidekick is a hoot and SGs are great.
Yeah, he's a handful. Thankfully, I have viewers like yourself who make it all so worth it. Thanks very much for watching!
you just discovered what ive known since i ve known since i was 14 im now 61 had almost every guitar ever made, the Gibson SG always wins, could never figure out who could not like them but who cares not everyone has good taste or is intelligent good video but neck dive is a non issue for a real man
I put a bigsby b3 on my sg faded and it worked wonders for the neck dive issue. Plus its fun and it looks cool as hell!
Nice! Might try doing that too.
My own experience was similar - I avoided the SG for a long time. However, I now own a '61 Les Paul Reissue SG and love it. Neck dive on the strap was a real issue for me, so I've installed a strap button on the upper horn, fitted a copper backplate and use a suede lined strap.
Guitar players search for the right pickups ,strings, knobs , tuners and forget that neck dive has a simple solution suede backing on the strap ... issue solved
I own a Les Paul and a couple of SGs - SGs wins every time. Great tone, lightweight and playable, all of the benefits of the LP without the heft and bulk.....
In so many ways, I totally agree. The LP just has a better sustain though, I feel. Thanks for watching!
Very light and comfortable. And it sounds great.
I just bought a Gibson SG 50s Tribute with P90s, sounds so good, love it !!!
Own two sg’s from early zero’s which I put through some pedals a vx kraken and an old 2204. It kills everyone in the venue and their spawn. This guitar will inspire every cell in your body. Like a strat, but way more cooler and better. It’s punk, it’s hard rocking, but it can also be jazzy and elegant. Save up for a good one. Perhaps an old one. It will be worth it 🤘🏻😎
Wish I was there at that venue to hear it! Sounds awesome. Something about this guitar just invites you to play heavy riffs. Thanks for watching!
The neck dive is more of modern issue as all the original sg models had tremolo tailpiece which gave some balance in weight
Interesting. Now I gotta try the SG custom with Vibrola to see if that has better balance. Thanks for watching!
That & the gradual reduction of Male testosterone
That is just blatantly false. Not every SG had a tail piece. It isn’t a modern issue. It’s an issue with the overall design.
This is a very well edited and informative video. I learned something!
Glad you liked it! More videos to come soon!
Nice video man, you have a nice and ez approach to presenting your material, its refreshing. One little issue, you should maybe think about how you present your amplified guitar sounds, the string "pluck" sound is distracting. Thanks for the work you do. ✌
Well noted, and now sorted on future videos! Thanks for your feedback and for watching the vids!
I'm a Les Paul guy all my life and I have 5 of them. Never gave the SG a second thought. Recently started to become interested in them. I bought my first Gibson SG, a standard, three days ago and I LOVE IT!!! Now I'm a Les Paul AND SG guy.
Likewise
I had one hated the neck dive i have a friend's 69 sg ressiue man he might not get back 😊😅
I bought a Gibson LPJ a few years ago. Way too heavy! My bro' owns it now. Missed out on a cheap SGJ after 😢 but my Epi G400 Goth for $300 Australian is definitely 1 of my favourites! & I own "a lot of guitars"! I'd better dig it out 1 day, soon.
Nice info. Always loved the look of this guitar and the way it sounds is awesome
I personally think this is the guitar for you. Thanks for watching, Shid!
Loving this bro :)) stay awesome!
Thanks for your continuous support! Gotta get you involved in these shows somehow.
@@loudmikedxb An absolute joy watching a young RUclipsr emerge :)) would love to get involved bro
Of course gretsch perfected the concept with the astrojet
Would love to talk about that guitar at some point. If only I get my hands on one.
@@loudmikedxb they are very rare I believe, bought mine from Holland off reverb I live in wales UK and I love it, the supertron pickups are fantastic , mine is 1964 , they were only made for 3 years
@@marcraygun6290 I did a quick search online and yes, I can see it will be hard getting hold of one. Any other Gretsch I can review for u? Make it easy for me to find though. Lol.
@@loudmikedxb pity we live 5000 miles apart or I could lend it to you , here it being used at a gig , ruclips.net/video/VFJ_prSnVnk/видео.html , I have never actually seen anyone playing one live , as far as reviews of gretsches the corvette is cool model you don't see much about
@@marcraygun6290 saw the video. Is that your band? Awesome vocals! And very cool guitar.
I absolutely loved the look of SGs back when I first started playing. Especially the SG Gothic with all black hardware. Not as much as I love my kidneys though.
SG Gothic? Gotta check that out.
What do you mean about your kidneys? I bought one in 2004, still my main stage guitar. Best SG of my 3 gibsons
Don't forget Robby Krieger of The Doors
Forehead slap. Yes, my bad. Ironically we were just played LA Woman at a club few weeks ago.
LOL! Love the "I Will Survive" reference. Gloria Gaynor Rules! 🤘
Thank you for watching! Yes, Gloria rocks! Pls make sure to subscribe and spread the word about the channel!
Good video man. The Emo on you know it lml
Thanks man. Oh yeah, closet emo here.
Love my SG😍🤘
Really informative 👍though im not a guitar enthusiast. Im here for the comedy and your life quotes😅😘
I like the AC DC inspired riff kicking this off!
That track is Hey Hey Hey by Sandwash. It’s on Spotify. Thanks for watching and for your kind words!
Les Paul and Strat all day long over the SG.
Excellent video. I think one of the selling features is it’s lightweight body. Easy to play on stage.
Absolutely agree. I look forward to gigs because of that! Thanks for watching!
@@loudmikedxb I found your vid because I was looking at potentially getting one but like you I never really liked the looks. I used a mid 60s es330 back in the late 70s until the 90s for gigging because of the light weight. Feedback was a bit of an issue but I found ways around it. Cheers Rich.
@@Richard_Lush I always used to take weight for granted because most of my life, I was playing Fenders. When I got an LP Custom, I loved playing it in the studio but had a shock when I took it to a gig, I was turning into a hunchback within 30 mins! On the other hand, now when I gig with the SG, it feels like my Strat, but with a thick sound Gibson sound. It's a great middle ground.
Good video bro
Thanks so much for watching!
Hiiii im here amazing❤
Whoah! You came over, nice! I cant find your SG on your insta bro. Where is it?
👍👏
Thanks for watching man!
Rumble isn't tone.
lol... sorry, I hate the SG... combo of the neck dive and the way the body feels... I don't like the contours, they look ok but it doesn't feel right when I'm playing.
ok, I will sub, and despite the guitar, give you "like #11" ... there, my mojo will give you more likes ;)
Much appreciated! Thank you.
Since you took great pains to tell us what you hate, why don't you now disclose the guitar(s) that you find acceptable. We're all dying to hear.
@@scottbrower9052 Hi Scott. If you watch the video, you’d see I ended up loving the SG after trying it personally. And I did admit it was a case of letting my preconceived notions prevent me from experiencing something good. No hate in this channel. Just love for music.
@@scottbrower9052 great pains eh? Ok, I prefer my US Fender VG Strat, as well as both of my Gibson Les Paul Classics, also my G&L Legacy Strat is pretty awesome as well... but the 2 of my most favorite guitars which I still own is my 91 US Peavey Destiny Superstrat and my 92 Fender Lyte Precision Bass (Japan)... tell me Scott, since you went through the pains of asking... what guitars do you find acceptable... please share.
Neck dive is a myth. I have 3 and no dive on those
