This musical documentary captures the elusive character of one of rock's greatest musicians: Rock 'n' Roll Hall-of-Famer Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix, arguably the most influential guitarist in the history of rock 'n' roll, is shown in rare performances, interviews and behind-the-scenes footage including such legendary songs as "Purple Haze," "Little Wing," and "Foxy Lady." Hendrix's all-too-brief career was cut short by a fatal overdose at the age of 27 in 1970.
Directed By Joe Boyd, John Head, Gary Weis
Starring Arthur Allen, Albert Allen, Stella Benabon

A 12-string tuned down is the best sounding instrument ever
... four semitones I reckon and yes, sounds great. No wonder he could bend the strings so well on fret two.
He's got it tuned to B standard
Not an easy feat tuning a 12 banger either.
@@damfeller6978 You are close, but you're a half step low. "rayh72" has it right. It is "C standard" tuning. That's what all the sources say that I've found, plus I have "tuned up" (down) to it and it is indeed "C standard" tuning, which is down - "a major 3rd" - or, "2 whole steps" - or, "4 half steps" - a k.a. "4 semitones".
So, if you tune down that far, then an A note is the 4th fret up on the open 5th string, which would normally be C#. Technically A is still 440 Hz, but the "new C#" note is now an A note (440Hz). Don't ask me what the new open A string is in hertz, I just know it's an F note. But I leaned decades ago that he is tuned to "C standard".
But a lot of bands DO use a "B standard" tuning quite extensively. I've learned a lot of weird tunings from grunge, metal, and alternative bands. It can get pretty technical & complicated.
@@rayh72 Yeah, 4 semitones down. And I was thinking the same thing, slack tuning makes string bending a lot easier, even close to the nut - on the second fret.
What most people don’t know is that Jimi completely improvised this on the spot and that’s why he initially started playing it sounded completely different that what he ended up playing. Pure genius
I won't argue with that and can agree but to play devil's advocate, he plays all of his songs differently slightly different every time pre and post recording
This video was the last thing my best friend posted on his Facebook before he passed away.. RIP JSheks
sorry for your loss brother
Thanks Sam
♥️So sorry for your loss. Cherish good times.
@@ashb234 thank you 🙏🏽 ❤️
I’m really sorry for your loss I hope you’re doing okay
he's improvising, on a new guitar, on the spot in front of camera, at the age of 23-24, truly amazing - you can tell his heart and soul was truly in the blues, he lived and breathed every aspect of his roots, - a truly truly magical man - what a musical talent - we should be so glad cameras and recording technology was around the capture him.
Most musicians will just improvise for a more complicated guitar part
I doubt that was totally improvised.
its a song not improv
Thanks ! On a 12 string at that.
He was 26 at the makinv of this film December of 1967
Jimi was a for real bluesman. He once said that he got tired of blues because it came to him so easy.
That’s deep
"easy to play but hard to feel"
it's sad we didn't get a Hendrix acoustic blues album :(

Yup. But ah.. yeah
Great attitude
His voice is angelic! Would give anything for pipes like his.
Its not about speed or the correct note, its about feeling and emotion. Still the number 1 after his passing 50 years ago

@Blackflag lol awww you a little baby. Never said anything about jimi. Read better cmon now.
His legacy as a guitarist is impeccable. It should also be noted that his rhythm, harmony, melody, and singing qualities were also genius caliber.
I want this played at my funeral.
You know, I have to say it, Jimi was great, and if it hadn't been for him, the guitar players that came after him, never would have happened. Randy Rhoads, Eddie Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robin Trower, Frankie Marino, and many others wouldn't have come out to play guitar at all. Hendrix was the inspiration for those that came after him. To play, and to be the next generation of guitar gods.

Made me chuckle
I bought this movie on Amazon, yes it was released in 1973... The best part is Eric Clapton saying how much he Hated Jimi until he saw Jimi play Wild Thing with only 5 strings because he broke a string. Eric thought "Now What Are You Going To Do Asshole?" But Jimi started playing Wild Thing and charmed Eric, and he loved Jimi after that...
He was definitely jealous
@@ethanwood9124 and a known racist, hate to say it, but it is out there
It's ironic that Clapton made a notoriously racist speech whilst making a pile playing black,working-class music.Just should have kept his mouth shut that night.

@@ethanwood9124 Who wouldn't be! He came along and completely blew everyone out the park. Every interview I've seen of clapton he has praised Jimi.
I was a kid when Hendrix first appeared, now at 65 i see a kid, playing that tune, a phenominal kid, and i was a lucky kid, thanks Jimi.
I would of never thought jimi feared anything with his playing lmaooo he's so authentic i love it 🥰
Yeah I've seen footage of him getting pissed off becauseause things weren't coming out like he wanted
He is so fearless playing I surely would not have ever expected to hear those words from his mouth. Every time I see something like this it's a good reminder that no matter how someone appears, we are all only human after all. No matter that some may appear gods ...
But he was a humble kinda fella and was very self conscious.
he wasnt tored of the blues, when he wrote red house, best blues ever written.especially the studio version, still get chills
this might be the best acoustic performance of all time
Right you are!
You know as a young boy growing up in the 60s i listen to a lot of my buddy and in the 70s i bought my first fender strat right hand guitar 🎸 and I am left handed (south paw) so i started playing not as good as my friend but close 😊 i remember that i think he visited washington dc back in the 60s i was born and raised there, and remember seeing him as a young child wow any going to pick up a couple of Marshall Amp's and jam! Star spangled banner 😊!.
Made a small mistake in texting, the word anyway going to pick up a couple of Marshall Amp's.😅.
Jimi Hendrix is the name of the film, and it did came out in 1973!
1973!!!
1973!!!!, you say ???? ... The Dude abides.
Jimi is killing it.
hendrix died in 1970 so its nice to see this ... feels like he is still alive some how... his music is immortal :)
It’s nice to see the wrong date in the thumbnail?
I refuse to believe this was improvised. It's just too perfect
Jimi was the blues. He spoke that language. No one ever says about regular folks-‘Hey they’re improvising that conversation.’ It just happens because people speak a language. He was the blues.
IF you know enough blues licks, you can pretty much improvise anything on the spot. Took me years to get there but I can now.
In open tunings it's not that hard to improvise like that
He added a bit of his style to a typical delta blues song
It's actually way easier to do than it looks
It wasn't- he'd been playing that song in concert for at least a year by then.
@@raidzeromattits standard d#, no open tuning

I think you misunderstood me guitar monkey
To clarify we were talking about when the film was recorded.... not the song... the song was first recorded december 1967 in London England.... the film was recorded in 1968 with that track on it
(the only version of the song released during Hendrix's time here on earth)
Just a little extra fact all other recordings of that song that were recorded from 1967-1970 that have ever been released came out after his passing
Which IMO is a very special track if jimi gave the ok to release it... he was rarely ever happy with himself or recordings of himself especially while playing solo.... or whoTF knows if he had any say lol
Cheers

A classic episode on record, true roots music yo❤
After pre intro, at 0:57 the intro starts in 6/8 shuffle rhythm and then after a 5/4 measure of the first vocal line he switches to 4/4 straight rhythm with 8 beats per bar starting right on "...train..." and then stays on 4/4 but at 2:54 he does a shuffle riff in two measures of 2/4 within the 8 beats of the bar to remind you of the shuffle 6/8 of the intro. Amazingly creative even with time signatures and fluid rhythm transitions on top of everything else improvised here.
what a bloody brilliant piece of music.

How fortunate for us to see something so incredible
Jimi is one of my favorite artists ever since my teenage years. Its amazing how everytime i come back to his music i still find something new. When i first heard this i just thought about how cool his vibe was, how he played the blues in a unique way, but now its so obvious that this "cool vibe" its just him honoring and letting out his connection with his cherokee roots and the blues. Thats where the "goat" or "genius" magic is, when you are connected and true to yourself and the art you're crafting. And he knew that at a very young age, bro was something else for real.
This should have billions views
