Very neat job , never figured out about the annealing of the tag ends , .....really unobstrusive for perch , but yet strong enough to hold up for pike ,...just perfect leaders , Paul , .......thanks for sharing . Greetz , Dieter
"Catching up slowly working my way thru your back catalogue of videos" surprised at just how many I've missed Paul, once again fella "Great Work, Well Done"
nice tutorial. .... I do enjoy every single one of your videos. .. I guees I can at least thank you for sharing your knowledge buddy.... thanks.... by the way I love your spinner blade tutorials you make it look very simple and easy....
good idea! I use leaders of 40 pound braid at the end of my line for the same reason. Where I am there are chain pickerel in most places. These fish are in the pike family, and very similar with sharp teeth that cut through monofilament easily. With the 40 pound braid leaders I make and use, I have not been cut off by these fish in years! I typicaly throw small lures for perch/sunfish/crappies,but bigger fish take them too.
Thanks, i had my long nose pliers through the gills of a pike that had almost swallowed one of my micro lures this evening, i could of done with a nurse to mop my brow, that is the other draw back of casing perch in pike infested waters. I got it out without damaging anything but i had to cut my lovely trace.
***** Dr Adams will see you in a minute. I had one the other day too mate, same thing but I rescued the trace. I never faff and tidy up my traces like you did as they never last long enough where I am, damn those jacks! lol
Paul ive used monel wire for traces as you call them for saltwater use they work and i believe the manufacturer is Malin again great vid buddy keep em coming hi hooks to ya
Midwest Fishing Show It is the same here shop bought pike leaders tend to be a bit heavy for perch fishing but i suppose that is the advantage of making my own. Thanks
Paul another most excellent vid but why epoxy ?to keep from unfurling? if so smart very smart but maybe a haywire twist instead ?either way great job!!!!
w delakas The epoxy just protects it from the weed or snags that would make the end of the wire stick out, the knot does about 90 percent of the work. I do not think this wire is really suitable for the haywire twists it hasn't got enough stiffness. But i might have ago with some thin Malin wire i have
Definatly going to give these a try! My only question is if uncoated wire is used would that mean it will corrode after several uses and become weaker or not? Thanks for sharing
It is still stainless steel so it will not corrode, but these are very lightweight and do get damaged, this is not something i would set out to pike fish but it can cope with them. Thanks
Hi. Please could you make a video on fishing for perch with a spinner. There is no other good videos out there and you are my favourite channel.please could you make a perch fishing video
Nice one. Few vids on u tube show the fisherman using fluro without a trace especially for perch. Up until the other day I'd had perch n jack's on this set up. Then got a strike off which must of been a pike. This trace you make looks the ticket. How long will one last ? Cheers
i have never been a big fan fluro for traces, as i don't have much luck with it using it with none toothy fish in snaggy conditions, but some people swear by it, i suppose that's fishing, it ain't one religion, and your experience is as valuable as anyone else's, cheers
Do you know if you can use the same "twist" technique for the titanium leader material. I think the loop and twist method seems extremely simple but wonder how it will work with Titanium.
I've been trying to get hold of balsa dowel but I can't find it anywhere and I refuse to pay B&Q's prices! I've been using kindling sticks pinched from the bag by the log burner as it's dense wood and floats well, carved with a Stanley knife and painted with acrylic then coated in epoxy.
Louis Gerard I used to make sliding pike float or sea floats from corks this link may explain things a little better erraid.blogspot.co.uk/2011/09/it-is-dark-outside-tool-shed-light-from.html
iv started using micro jigs for perch and i was looking for a trace link that will fit the small size 4 hook eyes. any ideas? currently having to use flurocarbon which as we all know is not great if pike are about.
Luke Turner I have some really tiny snaps that would probably do but they are so small i cannot use them. Fly fishing snaps may be better, i think Mustad do some snap hooks for linking into flies. another option may be 49 strand wire which can just tied on. I do not always use traces for perch when i get down to tiny jigs i just go with fluorocarbon, i have never had success at tempting pike with tiny jigs or a no6/8 drop shot rig i think it is just inside that range of baits that would make it a very rare occasion. I have landed pike float fishing with maggots on three pound line and unhooked (unwrapped) pike caught on similar gear for others who were fishing with mussel. What i have found is a tiny hook sizes the pike tend not to be hooked but often just snagged or wrapped in the line. Thanks
I used to use monel wire on mooring shackles for boats to stop the pins coming undone, but i remember it being soft to bend and wrap but not flexible like braided wire which is a bit like a stiff string. Is the monel fishing wire different? i have never used it for fishing.. thanks
Homemadefreak I only use theses for ultra light lures and mainly when targeting perch, they will cope with pike but seldom last after an encounter with them.
Nothing more relaxing on a cold miserable morning than to watch one of your productions and as always they inspire me thank you Paul

Great, easily followed video, for those who aren`t in the know. Even something as simple as a homemade trace, makes that capture,a bit more satisfying.
Really helpful
I urge fish for Perch but certainly catch jacks frequently.
These are very neat looking traces
"Catching up slowly working my way thru your back catalogue of videos" surprised at just how many I've missed Paul, once again fella "Great Work, Well Done"
Exactly what I was looking for and explained perfectly. Ty 👍
Your videos are small pieces of art Paul
Great thought, pike and muskie leaders are quite expensive, thank you for your efforts and ingenuity....very helpfull!
great vid paul i also use these light leaders for perch fishing as pike are always lurking around where there is perch.
SolarBaits I just wish the bloody fish would know what species i was fishing for and get themselves in a queue, cheers Mikko
nice tutorial. .... I do enjoy every single one of your videos. .. I guees I can at least thank you for sharing your knowledge buddy.... thanks.... by the way I love your spinner blade tutorials you make it look very simple and easy....

Like it, saves on the crimps
Perfect paul thanks good system.
another great vid, thank you.
Excellent video Paul must more subtle than a store bought leader here in the US
Midwest Fishing Show It is the same here shop bought pike leaders tend to be a bit heavy for perch fishing but i suppose that is the advantage of making my own. Thanks
Brilliant for beginners like me
Awesome tip

Nice video.
Can I ask, do you connect the swivel directly to your braid or do you still have a flouro leader ?
TIA
mostly straight to braid, but occasionally on the canal I use fluro for perch
Great idea!
Sound this pal thanks its made it so much easier to do

+Millsboy it is not something i have tried
Están muy bueno los videos quisiera que los pasen con subtitulo
Jorge Vergara Sorry i may start doing subtitles for future videos
any chance of a video on handmade pike floats? I've been experimenting but the results haven't been great. cheers.
what materials are you using?
***** and what type of pike floats?

***** massive help, cheers paul
When i use stronger wire, can i make the leaders with the same technik or is it better with ...
I tend to go with crimps on heavier wire but twisting can work as well, i think it is personal preference
Steel crimbs?

Already
oh 1 other how about monel wire a bit softer and no need to anneal
I used to use monel wire on mooring shackles for boats to stop the pins coming undone, but i remember it being soft to bend and wrap but not flexible like braided wire which is a bit like a stiff string. Is the monel fishing wire different? i have never used it for fishing.. thanks
Do you sell these?
Can we buy your products somewhere or internet?
Akay kırkıkoğlu I just make videos about making fishing tackle, thanks
Can i use them alteady for pike?
Homemadefreak I only use theses for ultra light lures and mainly when targeting perch, they will cope with pike but seldom last after an encounter with them.
oh by the way my traces were used on toothy bluefish in salt
or just buy even thiner leader in fishing store...
