If you're going to be sewing denim, especially through a lot of layers like over an already made waste band or over a hem, make sure to go really really slow and change your needle to a stronger one if you can, I've broken so many needles going over thicker fabrics like denim and going slow and being patient really makes a world of difference
I hand crank over denim seams, i also use fabric the same width to support the foot, and always use the right needle. The only time i broke a needle was when i hit a pin i didn’t see.
This is a great idea for new jeans when you have a booty and a small waist. Sometimes I go one size up and the waist is too big. It's so hard to find the perfect pair of jeans!
When you sew the pocket back on, it will be in the same spot, but cover more of the original jeans. There shouldn't be any fabric showing that wasn't originally covered by the pocket.
Fujoshi Vu depends where you're from... my tailor charges around $20 which is about a third to a quarter to what jeans cost. Not saying $20 isn't a lot but if u really like a pair of jeans then it's all about cost vs worth 🤷🏻♀️
If you can’t cook, I wouldn’t expect anyone to rise to the occasion and then be a tailor. That being said you’re providing great knowledge to those who can comprehend. This is a unique talent for a unique woman/ man or just anyone with a hair of ambition. Good stuff. Just subbed
Sierra Swearingen Aaaaah, that is a good idea!!! I attempted at downsizing a pair of jeans months ago the same way wendy did here, but the pockets were too saggy so they ended up in my UFO box.
Kim It wasn't perfect. Her seams along the back did not match up and her pockets were baggy. Give it a shot. You'd be surprised at what practicing does. Good luck! I know it'll look great.
withwendy young butt can't you make the pockets smaller are you in now it's off but I think you've done a beautiful job I like that I enjoyed your film I enjoyed it
I followed these instructions including the last step where you turn the waistband inside out to alter a pair of jean shorts. I took out a little over an inch, and it turned out great! Thank you Wendy!!
Literally just got done fixing my two formal pants because I was too frustrated with the off-sizing (+ I have 2 interviews coming up) and I can't thank you enough for this video. God bless you forever and always! 🙌

I used the "side waist-hip darts" on a pair of cheap F21 jeans to make them similar to the bold curve style of my levi jeans. Best sewing tip i have for that problem where your legs fit, your hip fits but the waist is too large for you
I'm so glad I found this omg!! I lost some weight and my favorite pair of jeans is super saggy now, I almost threw them away but now I know how to fix them thanks to you! ❤️
I really love your fixing & mending tutorials! I took darts in pants before, but never thought of hiding it inside the waistband. That extra step makes all the difference!
Your idea to do the dart, then the waistband, is brilliant! You saved me a lot of unnecessary frustration. I'll be watching all of your videos. Thank you so much!! Long story long, I tripped over the dog, got stuck in a chair for a year, and lost 120 lbs. eating a gallon of ice cream/day {No, I didn't get tired of it, and, no, I wouldn't expect the same result no matter how much you want to try it, so sorry :-(.}. Altering pieces is the best way to rebuild my wardrobe, along with thrift store finds to wear while stabilizing, then cutting them to up add interesting details or hide obvious alterations. Gravity complicated the process. Basically, I had to gather my fanny up from around my ankles and carry it around like a hoop skirt for awhile to avoid tripping. I can't thank you enough for putting the time in to help others. :)
I found this at the perfect time. I just bought jeans that fit in the waist. It ate slightly more baggy in the leg than I'd like. This is also good for modifying thrifts clothes as they often aren't a perfect fit.
Just wanted to say, I used this method for my jeans and it worked so well! I’m so happy with how it worked it out ◡̈ thanks very much for your help!! I also used this for my skirt as well
I can't wait to try this. The most I've done before are putting darts in the back and I need to now slim down the excess fabric in the legs and butt if I can. I decided to go through all the trouble because I have three pair of jeans that I love and I have a very hard time with jeans fitting me. It took me a long time to find those three pair. I've also lost almost 30 pounds so I'm down two sizes. Going to get my sewing machine out of storage! Great video 🙂
THANK YOU SO MUCH WENDY!!!!! I had a pair of jeggings that were so cute but I literally couldn't wear them because the waist was so huge to get them around my bum, but I can finally wear them without awkwardly hiding a belt bulge and annoying things like that. I got a bit confused with taking apart and resewing the waist band, but I got it eventually! I'm pretty new at sewing so it doesn't look perfect, but no one would ever know unless I pointed it out! Seriously, thank you!!!!
What a great way of making the waistline look professional! I have to take in pretty much all my jeans at the top (big hips, small waist). I have been doing it the 'lazy' way all this time and never liked the way it looked. From now on I'll be doing it your way!

this is such a life saver honestly. i used to hate jeans because they we're always so loose around my thighs/knees (im super thin) but thank god for this video omg bless
hey Wendy, thanks to your video I was able to put three pairs of pants back into my wardrobe. I'm stuck at home an ice storm in the Midwest on a Saturday and this was very helpful, thank you!
THANKYOU this was extremely helpful. My mom and grandma are pretty big on sewing, but whenever they take in my jeans the darts ALWAYS stick out. You're amazing please keep up this amazing work. You've saved my jeans!
I was glad that you finally thinned out the waistband! It is a nasty job but if you wouldnt the waistband would be annoyingly thick. So thumbs up for you for doing it the right way 👍🏻👍🏻
Wendy! Thanks so much for this tutorial! I just finished making my formerly "skinny jeans", skinny once again. I even took off the pockets and re-sewed them back on with the yellow top stitching. They look great, and so does my butt in these new jeans! Not to mention, my bank account didn't take the hit on a new pair of jeans......thanks Wendy!!!
I lost a fair bit of weight recently too. I hated the prospect of throwing away some nice old pairs. This stuff makes me wana learn how to tailor. Thanks wendy!!
Thank you for this video! I always struggle buying pants since i have wide hips compared to my waist (the struggles of big booty lmao). Pants tend to fit around my butt, but the waistband ends up being way to wide. Fixed two nice summer shorts that have been hiding away in the back of my closet for years thanks to this video 😊💕
So, as it always happened in my family, we always give the clothes we aren't going to wear anymore to our cousin or aunts. So I got this really huge jeans(like it has more than 6 cm in every side of my legs and waist) I sew(no machine) all the side but not in my inner thigh, but in the sides she didnt wanted to sew. It looks pretty good right, not perfect but okay. Now i have a new pair skinny jeans.
I CAN'T WAIT TO TRY THIS! I bought this pair of mom jeans on amazon and people in the reviews are saying to buy a size up because it's smaller and I got mine but the legs are a bit more wider than what I thought it should be and my mom threw away the box and reciept so now I can't exchange it :(
Hi Wendy! You can also downsize it from the sides which makes it look exactly the same but the size of your preference. Of course the fabric on the sides is a little bit more so the needle may break but i suggest that you try it
Thank you so much for doing this for way too big jeans on legs. I now can finally not worry about my length being too short. You are a life saver tysm ❤️

Thanks ! This was very well done, instructions were clear and understandable. Appreciate the info on managing pocket sag and how to keep from changing the height of the jeans. Great video !
That was an excellent tutorial thank you. For your own safety and ease of sewing, it is good to place the pins across where you are going to sew, rather than in line with where you are going to sew. Then you can remove the pins after you have sewn, rather than during your sewing. :) xo
please slow down a tad. Especially at certain points or just pause for a couple seconds before going on the next part. For instance, where you showed the straight line from the top of waist that you were taking in. Was it a "straight" vertical line? or straight diagonal line? . If you could pause at places like that to show the work it would be much easier to follow and learn without repeatedly repeating watching it! Thank you! :)
Would you perhaps ever do a video on taking in thigh high/knee high boots so making the material smaller and tighter to the leg?? Stick leg problems sos
This helped SO much! I honestly would have just sewn straight down the leg for both jobs lol! Luckily for me, sewing denim scares the crap out of me, so I decided to youtube search it first.. Thanks for this video!
Very good tutorial. The only thing is that it’s hard to see up close what you are doing. I think still shots zoomed in would be so helpful, inserted in the video. I appreciate your tutorials 😀
Thank you so much ! I bought old levi's jeans but they are twice my size because I wanted them to be super high waisted so this tutorial is very welcom
THANK YOU! :D I have a few pairs of really cute pants that my friend gave me, but they're a bit too big. I thought I was going to have to completely remove the waistband! Dx I'm so glad I found this :)
Perfect, can you please do video for downsize dungarees? I would like to see it, your explanation skill is mind blowing. Thanks for sharing your ideas 😘😘😘
Hi, Wendy!! I love your videos! I was just wondering if you could make a video about downsizing the waist on a skirt. I have a circle skirt with a waist band attached to it and a zipper down the back of the skirt. I love the shape of it! The only problem is the waist is too big. Thank you so much! Much love ♥
This video is great! Just what I need. However, when you do different steps it would be nice if you paused a little and showed a zoom in of it for a sec or two, just to make it easier to see for us neewbies. Thanks for the video, you got yourself a new subscriber 🤗
how did you end up losing weight? I'm not too fat, but I do have some flab that I'm looking to lose and exercise and dieting alone haven't been working for me. (I've been working out for 4 months and dieting for 5 and I still weigh what I did when I started..)
Literally just eat once or twice a day. Or very small snack portions 3 to 5 times throughout the day. Like a granola bar, banana, and apple. NEVER EAT CARBS. Just don't eat them at all, they're not good for you and they make you fat. Drink a lot of water. Do that for a couple weeks WITHOUT EXERCISE. Yes without exercise. Because if you cut down on food all of sudden + exercise, that just makes you more hungry and crave more food. So after you get used to eating less, then start to exercise. And when I say exercise I mean, lots of cardio and physical movement. Weight training is okay, but emphasize the cardio. You're body will crave sugar after exercising hard, so eat a granola bar or an apple, NOT fake sugar foods like candy and desserts. Bicycle pedaling or real cycling is VERY VERY good for losing weight (especially belly). And you get toned legs too! You can take a spin class maybe. When you start this physical exercise, you should add to your diet of course. So no more small meals, but little bit increase. However, only healthy food. No carbs still. Only a little meat (mostly whites like fish and chicken or good). Did i mention staying away from carbs? LOL. But yea. No pasta, bread, bread, and no bread. FRUIT AND VEGGIES are must. Eggs are okay. Look up healthy proteins. Even gluten free isn't necessarily good for you. So try to eat that only once a week. YOu can cheat only once a month. And once you lose weight, you can cheat once a week. When i say cheat, I mean eat junk food. When I say junk food, i mean the carbs who have been craving. However not in excess. Do not eat snacks. That means no chips, munchies, fast food, or candies. No soda or sugar drinks either. strictly water. You do this, and you will lose weight no matter what. Make sure you get your daily essential vitamins of course. If I have to some this whole post up it is, cut down portion size by half (at the least), spin class, no carbs, no liquids except water, no junk food.
***** If you want to lose weight fast from being a complete whale, then no, they are not GOOD for you. Most starchy food such as white bread and pasta is converted into sugar in the body, which raises blood pressure faster than candy. And then lowers the blood pressure extremely fast. This makes you want to eat more because you're body is hungry. That is why eating carbs makes you fatter. Because you crave more food afterwards. That's why you become super full very fast when you eat pasta. Then get super hungry a couple hours later.
+Mami Burger I'm dieting too so I know how crappy it is and frustrating to not lose weight, but I have to say that you need SOME carbs for proper cell function. Didn't get this information from any fitness blog or even trainer, but from my biochemistry and nutrition class at a top rated university. I'm going against all nutritionist recommendations with my calories being too low, but I'm impatient and want quicker results! I've been using the app "calorie count" to make sure I get the right amount of nutrition while still cutting massive calories. Also, (this is an extreme oversimplification) when initially cutting so many calories your body will likely retain water like crazy while its trying to get energy from your current cells. Of course, water, water, water! You can calculate the amount you need with various websites out there- even then I end up taking in more at times. But don't drink too much water either because it will kill you, no joke!
My previous comment I meant to write mostly towards you and ended up getting everything mixed in together, so please check that out 😊! But I wanted to say too that weight loss is a straight mathematical formula- calories in versus calories out. Just from what you have said you are probably overestimating the amount you are eating or eating too many calories to have weight loss. Check these out: www.calorieking.com/interactive-tools/how-many-calories-should-you-eat/?ref=nav www.aworkoutroutine.com/starvation-mode/
Yes, she is doing a great job on telling you how to fix them, but she needs to slow it down 50%. I don't want to have to keep repeating it to understand, nor do I want to mess with my computer settings. Just slow down the speaking, please.
OMG THANK YOU! I am a fairly skinny person but very tall so I have to buy long enough pants that are too wide. Now I know how to fix the leg and waist!
So I tried it and worked out well. However my pockets are sagging as it was a huge downsize....I decided to fix the pockets too by sewing the edges to corrected width and then dying the jeans a darker color because I had light color pockets and behind the pockets it was MUCH DARKER and you could see where the behind of the pocket used to be LOL ....fun project
hi wendy i was wondering if you could do a video on how to downsize skirts from the waist area im having a hard time figuring it out since im a bit of a beginner in sewing. this would help alot thanks
This is such a good tutorial, thank you! It's not really for stretchy jeans though is it? Maybe I'll put the darts on the sides so it doesn't strain the fabric above the back pockets when I squat down. EDIT: MY PANTS FIT PERFECTLY NOW, I just did the darts on the sides and did it the lazy way, just sewed straight up and cut the extra off. Had to sew it at work (lucky we sew!) because my home machine couldn't get through the waist. Maybe it could with a higher foot and a thicker needle?
I gave all my fat clothes away even my favorite jeans a few months ago NOW I FIND THIS VIDEO SMOKE COMING OUT MY EARS I'M PISSED. However I have more weight to lose and this video is a keeper I subscribed:(
lynda Clark least you didn’t do what I did lost weight and went and bought all new clothes and donated the old then gained all the weight back and had nothing to wear
You've already put the effort to make sure the darts look good at the waist band, might as well pick the stitches out of the sides of the pockets (outboard sides) and re-sew the pockets so they lie flat with the new hip line. With the taking in of the thighs, I always try to double or triple stitch as the crotch and inner thighs see a lot of tension in jeans. I've blown out inner thigh seams (albeit, on khakis), and it certainly isn't ideal. Keep up the good work, WW! ;]
If you're going to be sewing denim, especially through a lot of layers like over an already made waste band or over a hem, make sure to go really really slow and change your needle to a stronger one if you can, I've broken so many needles going over thicker fabrics like denim and going slow and being patient really makes a world of difference
Thank you!!

Thank you! :)
You can slow down the speed of the video. It's called playback speed, I think
You can remove the pockets and readjust them to fit aswell ☺️
LOL "flip da jeans inside out" *wiggle wiggle wiggle*
+Gretchen Lee so fun! Must wiggle!!
Omg this was super useful. I now know what to do with my baggy ripped jeans. love your videos they're amazing
Yesssss. Thanks for this! Down sizing the waist is too complicated for me. 😭 but verrry helpful! 💕
can't wait to do this to my favourite jeans that got a bit too baggy. love the video!
Dx
I'm so glad I found this :)
I like how sewing is so methodical
That's way less complicated than I thought it would be. Thanks! Will definitely be doing this!
Thank you. I just had to watch it a few times because I couldn't quite tell how you were doing some of it.
Excellent tutorial! Thanks for posting. Now I want to watch your tutorial on how to "skinny up" the legs.
I think I'm going to try this on a pair of my husband's old Jean's and make myself some shorts. Thanks for the vid. 👖✂️
ooo good idea
Perfect, can you please do video for downsize dungarees? I would like to see it, your explanation skill is mind blowing. Thanks for sharing your ideas 😘😘😘
Hi, Wendy!! I love your videos! I was just wondering if you could make a video about downsizing the waist on a skirt.
I have a circle skirt with a waist band attached to it and a zipper down the back of the skirt. I love the shape of it! The only problem is the waist is too big. Thank you so much! Much love ♥
Thanks Wendy! I lost some weight too and was about to throw out some pairs of jeans that I really liked. I can now wheir them again without a belt :D
Thank You Very Much! I wouldn’t of thought to do 2 inner pinches in the back on top of the pockets! That’s brilliant!
I have a belly but I have so skinny legs . all my skinny jeans look saggy 😭
Wiktoria supergirlnic I know right! So annoying
My problem too
My ass is flatter than a pancake.
Same😭
Same
She sounds a lot like claire from the movie, the town. Nice vid, I'm going to try the take in on the inside of the jeans.
This video is great! Just what I need. However, when you do different steps it would be nice if you paused a little and showed a zoom in of it for a sec or two, just to make it easier to see for us neewbies. Thanks for the video, you got yourself a new subscriber 🤗
Thank u!! I was looking forever for a way to sew them
Its really helpful to have a walking foot for your sewing machine when sewing multiple layers of heavy fabric.
Great! Do you also have any ideas on how to upsize jeans? especially around the hips and waist
how did you end up losing weight?
+Mami Burger are you joking carbs are ok
Just what I have been looking for and your details were perfect.
this is so helpful !! have you ever considered making a video on how to replace fake pants pockets with real pockets?
I was trying to follow the instructions but you speak so fast that at one point I was completely lost :(
Dulce Gonzalez re watch it a few times, she does it quickly to be more convenient :)
You can also check out her blog, she explains it way more in depth. It's usually linked in the descriptions of her videos
On the video, if you go to settings and slow it down to 0,75, it's a lot easier to follow.
Dulce Gonzalez Yeah
Yes, she is doing a great job on telling you how to fix them, but she needs to slow it down 50%. I don't want to have to keep repeating it to understand, nor do I want to mess with my computer settings. Just slow down the speaking, please.
This was super useul! Altered a pair of shorts and now they look bomb. Thanks for the tutorial
Great job. I am going to try both methods on some old jeans
I thrifted a bunch of pants for my bf that are too big. This video is a life saver
Now I just need the motivation to actually fix my jeans lol. I hate setting up my sewing machine so I usually do all my sewing by hand
OMG THANK YOU! I am a fairly skinny person but very tall so I have to buy long enough pants that are too wide. Now I know how to fix the leg and waist!
So I tried it and worked out well. However my pockets are sagging as it was a huge downsize....I decided to fix the pockets too by sewing the edges to corrected width and then dying the jeans a darker color because I had light color pockets and behind the pockets it was MUCH DARKER and you could see where the behind of the pocket used to be LOL ....fun project
hi wendy i was wondering if you could do a video on how to downsize skirts from the waist area im having a hard time figuring it out since im a bit of a beginner in sewing. this would help alot thanks
maybe you could do the same thing on the pockets? And then find some fancy embroidery or bedazzle it or something like that?
Keep up the good work, WW! ;]
if you take the center back waistband apart and taking the same up it will not be as bulky and the belt lupe will hide the slit
Thank you for such a clear tutorial! exactly what I needed!
I downsized my jeans. My worst jeans have become my new favorite!!
