Fallout 3's Intro Sucks

  • I love Fallout 3, but to say it starts out with a bang would be a lie, because the "bang" actually happened 9 months before the game. BUt really, the Fallout 3 Intro has always been a chore for me. Everything in Vault 101 just feels so slow and tedious. Both Fallout 1 and Fallout New Vegas had short and sweet intros, but they skipped that for whatever Fallout 3's intro is

I also always found it jarring that as soon as your character's grown up and Liam Neeson ditches you, the guards immediately go on a rampage, beat the Vault's only other medical professional until he becomes a loot container, blast several panicking innocents who probably just need someone to calm them down, do barely anything to stop the radroaches and are just in general exceedingly okay with obliterating people they spent decades living alongside with.
Yes, the game kind of tweaks your nose with the final GOAT question to push "Overseer is obsessed with power", but he's still lived his entire life with these people. Yeah, he's kind of a prick, but are we seriously supposed to believe he's unstable enough to go off the handle like that without any prior incidents?
That's my personal gripe with several parts of the game, really; characters start acting in utterly inexplicable ways as soon as the plot calls for it. Some actual choice would've been fun.
Imagine if the childhood sequence hadn't railroaded you towards Amata; if you could've instead fallen in with Butch's goons from the start, rather than having this idiotic one-time karma flip decision just ahead of the GOAT.
Imagine if Jonas is actually just arrested instead of being converted into XP by the guards, and the first guard you meet is the friendly one and you get the chance to turn yourself in for actual questioning instead of the fake choice it is in the game we got.
Imagine if one possible reason for your quest to find Liam Neeson wasn't just to find the guy who one day went out to buy milk, but to drag him back to the Vault to explain what madness possessed him to sneak out of the Vault, inadverdently letting in a flood of hungry radroaches and getting several people eaten by them. Yeah at that point you're getting into 'time to rewrite the story' territory, but seriously.

For being a video saying Fallout 3 has the worst intro, definitely gave it a lot of compliments while the only major complaints are that the skippable GOAT test is long and that the guard you can sneak past you have to kill.
I dont disagree with the opinion of it being an imperfect intro, but a video like this should have a bit more research and expansion upon its topics done.
Fr though while 3 may be my least favorite of the mainline Fallout games, 2 (my second favorite) has the worst intro by far.

The only thing in 2 that is worse than 3 is 30 minutes of kicking ants with 20% chance to hit, and that’s a consequence of building your tribal villager into science/big guns/energy, instead of skills that tribals would actually use. But yeah, i agree, I’d rather take a goat, than kite ants.

Fallout 3's intro is like... 5 minutes if you speed through it. The baby and toddler sections drag a little on repeat but everything else you can just skip and run straight through. Far better than Fallout 4's drowsy intro.

  • @PopeDuwang
    @PopeDuwang 8 месяцев назад +1

There’s a reason why People love the New Vegas Intro. You get Shot, wake up, pick your Traits and Tagged Perks and go outside to do whatever you want. That’s about 5 minutes. While I do like the Fallout 3 Intro, by the time you get free rain it’s been 30 mins to an hour. Same with 4. It takes a little too long to get to the game.
Edit: Instead of the 4 segments of fast forward, after birth we get the fast forward to when Dad is examining us for the GOAT and it’s here we get Specials and Traits (in my version we get Traits again). After that he sends us to The GOAT and it’s here where we skip the Butch scene for now. The GOAT will not be read to us and instead they will just say first question and it pops up and this happens with all questions. This will cut 5 mins of force dialogue from the teacher and help us get through The GOAT fast. Afterwards, our friend tells us to follow them and brings us to a room. When we open the door to the room, it’s a Surprise Birthday Party and for the most part it’s the same as the original one, except this is where The Butch moment is added to show us how Karma works. We get the Pip Boy and now we learn how to shoot with Dad. After we get the photo taken, a Fast Forward happens to when Dad is missing and now we escape the Vault.

Everyone bringing up how you can skip the G.O.A.T. the despite the fact that doesn't fix anything, and it is still not skipping the questions since what he likely meant is not being able to speed through the dialogue that the player has listened to a painful number of times. And the option to skip it is something done by a character who is of evil karma, which immediately causes roleplaying to be hanged from a noose just for a little convenience.
The entire thing is a combat dungeon like every other one in the game. It is the fact that Fallout 3 is left with the tumor-like problem of the clunky introduction for the player.
Like. I love the intro for Fallout 3, but it is only good for about once or twice until it simply becomes annoying and a little patronizing. It is a perfect introduction for a new player who has never touched the game but besides that it is simply a slog.

Every Bethesda game has the issue of not having a good main story fallout 3 does a decent job at alleviating that negative thing. But people like you just want Bethesda to focus on not providing a decent main story. I always will find it strange how people hate fallout 3 and criticize every little thing wrong with. But when it comes to fallout new Vegas and you criticize it. Everybody flips their shit, wines, and cries wild. I mean fallout new Vegas. Is only good because of its dlc if you take that away it’s just another mediocre Bethesda rpg game. Also fallout 3 helps new Vegas and provides game mechanics and concepts that are improved in it. God forbid say anything positive about fallout 3 tho.

It's kind of crazy to see the whiplash to fo3 over time. I remember my dad coming home with a random game he selecetd for the ps3 at the time and it was mesmorizing being thrust into a game that was fairly different then what we were use to seeing at the time and friends i kept in touch with also went on about how they liked it. Heck i remember 3 being liked over NV around the timeframe NV just dropped. Crazy to see how much things change.
I feel like a lot of people especially game reviewers simply never reach a real middle point between objective flaw and still being able to simply have fun with something. Yeah i had problems with 3 even back in the day like not being able to send fawkes in to save everybody because that was literally the obvious choice that saves everyone even to 10 year old me. The amount of reviews that are scared to give anything below a hard 7 without the mentality of it being utter garbage or grading parts of a game individually kind of reflects that in a way imo.
As for the intro itself i remember almost running out of bb ammo trying to hit that dang radroach. I think it would've been better of everything else was cut down until you take the goat as a canon thing vaultdwellers do upon becoming an adult so they can be assigned roles and then having liam neeson dad escape shortly afterwards.
For all the flaws of fo2 i believe in a match with the tribe warrior he tells you that not everyone can be talked down foreshadowing the fact that Frank will not back down as the final boss.

@happygosunday What happened was that everyone grew up. Fallout 3 was largely popular with teens/young adults who are the ideal target audience for a game with great atmosphere and 0 depth. New Vegas only came out a few years later when these same people were still young and emotionally attached to Fallout 3.
Then people grew up and replayed both games and realised that Fallout 3 is great in a few ways but really lazily designed in every way other than the nice little environmental stories and that the quest design + writing could have been done just as well by a 12 year old, whereas New Vegas put all its eggs into the role-playing basket and focused on world design/cohesion, great quest and dialogue writing and having the only Bethesda game with an interesting main story.
The consumers of the video gane industry simply got older, growing out of the dumb sandbox and growing in to the idea of an actual RPG

+ FO3 was the first big 3d game of its kind that was developed in the west so it was always going to be recieved brilliantly. FNV was seen as a lazy copy on release which it was always going to be. But then in retrospect everyone can see the ways that FNV objectively improved on 3 and that helps remind you of all the ways FO3 was actually a super terrible game.
To clarify I love FO3, I put in over 1k hours back in the day and I had a recent save at around 130 hours.
Unfortunately I spent a huge amount of that playtime thinking about how NV did stuff better

Definitely give it a go. I’m a huge Fo4 fan, and I’ve played the other 3D Fallout, and 3 strikes me as the right kind of gritty, and dirty, and unsettling. Plus, the map is huge. Double the others. The gun play feels dated, there’s no ADS, so you might want to go VATS.

Agree most of the intro is bad, I do find it kind of funny the thing with the goat and the security guard, I found out you could skip the goat pretty early so I never had to deal with that upon replays. I can’t specifically remember my first play through but In re plays I don’t think I’ve ever once killed that guard, he always just get distracted by the roaches, it’s funny how most videos I see annoyed with the intro mention him. now a days though I don’t even bother with the intro. I keep a save that’s right before you get to re do your character so my new games just start from that save

I don’t like the motivation for leaving. Searching for a Father who has survival skills that far surpass our own is foolhardy.
New Vegas is even dumber. Wasteland mailmen know their job is risky. You get shot, you don’t sweat it. For no good reason, the courier gets a bug up his behind, and delivers vengeance instead of mail. Not for a second did hunting Benny down make a lick of sense.
Not to mention Luke Perry phoned in his Benny voiceover like his last name was rotary.

bethesda games post morrowind seem to have a honeymoon phase where everyone thinks there the greatest thing there ever was and spend 100s of hours playing them then they get burnt out on them and start to look at the games more critically until a sort of synthesis of nitpicks and critque is reached where hour long essays explode onto the scene putting words to what most people feel but dont know how to articulate correctly

You can prove us that fo3’s intro is way better than NV one by deleting your save before the exit door.

"Fallout" 3 is a decent loot, shoot, and exploration game but a terrible RPG and Fallout game. "Fallout" 3 is only Fallout in name only, I don't hate "Fallout" 3 because it did at least lead to Fallout New Vegas the best game in the franchise but it really did throw out and destroy so much lore and also lead to "Fallout" 4 and 76, the worst games in the franchise in terms of being Fallout games. If "Fallout" 3 took place like 20 years after the nuclear war, the ruins of Washington DC would make sense instead of being a dump for the sake of having a bleak post nuclear look and atmosphere -_- also Bugthesda fanboys are way bigger incels than even the far right Neo Nazi morons who love New Vegas just to hate only hate on Bugthesda. There are many far right incel fanboys who love Liberty Prime and anti Chinese propaganda and Satire in Bugthesda's "Fallout" games LOL. This satire was done so much better in Obsidian's Fallout games.

Fallout: Brotherhood Of Steel was the worst in terms of being a Fallout game I would argue.

Fallout 2 is so much worse icl, the temple of trials is one of the stupidest additions ever and makes no sense lore wise! along with being a pain unless you have unarmed/melee weapons tagged.
Can't even blame the developers tho cuz interplay was like "give us a shitty tutorial section right now!"
